Schmidt said that personally (not as a Google executive) he was instructed by the example of Cuba. He said the embargo there hasn't worked, with Castro still in power, and with the Cuban people living with technology form the 1950s
So Mr. Schmidt, would you rather have a Cuba that is armed with 21'st century technology, nuclear, bio and chemical wmd capable? The point of the embargo was to contain Castro's sphere of influence, and it worked better then most have anticipated. Giving China technology will only make a stronger China, a China that is communist, a China that is ruled by a party that has killed more people then the National Socialists of Germany and the Soviet Comunist party of USSR combined.
Overall he said, the advertising industry in china is quite nascent, so there are very small amounts of revenue at stake
Then wtf are you doing this? Grow some balls and use technological/buisness means to empower the people of China, there is no reason why you have to deal with the goverment. If Lenovo wants to advertize in Google, they better let Google return unrestricted results in China. At this point in time, Google can hurt chineese buisnesses in the US more then China can hurt Google's buisness in China.

owever when you see that a ruling of this nature applies to much more than just one little application, but a whole range of them, it really takes it back to the whole fact that Microsoft basically wants every piece of your PC system to run Microsoft applications only.
Since when does the government knows what is the best design for an operating system? This is completely ass backwards for a goverment to tell MS how to design their OS, what applications to bundle it with and how integrated they should be. If the EU is unhappy with the product, why don't they mandate that EU goverment should use an alternative, like OSX, Solaris, HP-UX, AIX, or the multitude of BSD and Linux. There are plenty.
This whole lawsuit just seems like a couple of competitors that are loosing market share because they are slow to inovate. Honestly, if there are that many competitors that MS has "unfairly" attacked why dont they team up together and promote an alternative platform for their applications.
In the end its the applications that matter, not the platform that delivers them. If their applications are so great, yet its the platform that hinders them, then they should have no problem convincing the market to change. All I see is the market working how it should be, RealPlayer is the worst application ever written and should die.
You clearly, clearly, don't know what you're talking about. Ask Walmart how many Linspire computers they have to accept as returns from people who didn't realise that 'computer' 'Windows'.
When was the last time you saw the "Dell dude" tell you to "just get" a Linspire PC from Dell? Just because walmart has a couple dusty linpspire boxes doesnt mean that people will buy them. When you see a significant marketing effort from any major PC distributor then you can make a reasonable comparison. Walmart btw is not a major PC distributor.
Why, that's an excellent idea! You should contact the Korean government immed-- Whoops, it looks like somebody beat you to it.
Thats great, wtf is the goverment then trying to regulate how an OS product is designed? If they are not happy with it, dont fucking buy it.
Exactly, which is why Dell, HP, Lenovo, or whoever should be able to choose which browser, IM player, and media player they install on the complete systems they sell, and not be forced by the OS/kernel maker to include one and pay a penalty even if they don't want it.
If DELL, HP, Lenovo, etc.. are all muscled by just one MS, why dont they work together, and introduce a competing product to MS's core buisness? MS cant really shut out even one of the major PC distributors, simply because people will buy Dells or HP's regardless what os is on them. If anything its the distributors that hold MS by the balls, MS has no other way of selling their products then through the distributors.
It is just so lame when goverment tries to tell you how to desing on operating system, the market takes care of itself. Its governments job to make sure that buisnesses are plaing fairly, but that should only cover theft, loss of property, threats, etc... things of criminal nature, not how things are designed, or sold. If Korea really cares that much, why dont they just switch their government software to an alternative.
I can see now that the UE have the moral incensitive to switch their document to OpenDocument in the near future.
Why dont they do that instead of telling MS how to design its operating system. This law suit is so retarded, what the hell does the government know about what should be integrated into the OS or not? Personally I find it retarded on MS's part to make the media player/browser integrated at that level in the os, so I use linux. Guess what the EU should do, switch to a different product, instead of trying to act like a nanny state. If Real Player is complaining, why don't they team up with Suse or Red Hat and push linux on the desktop, be a fucking buisness dont run home to momy every time something doesn't go your way in the market. Think about it, if there are trully that many buisnesses that are being musled my MS then if they all teamed up to push alternatives to MS's core prodcuts they could make a significant dent in the market. And if there are to few of them or its to "hard" for them to do this, or they cant agree or cooperate then market is just working exactly how it should. Btw Real Player is one of the worst piece of shit software ever created.
Before you know it the EU commission will be regulating how I fart.
What is stopping Google from using the same tactics? They can just offer a tor service for china, no target at all as far as the chinese firewall is concerned. This is google we are talking about, they have the resources to make tor and i2c or freenet reach critical mass. It doesn't matter if china blocks them, buisnesses will still have to pay they for advertizing, otherwise they get pwn3d just like bmw.
So if this dinky little outfit can outsmart the chinnese cops, why does goog feel it nessessary to give in? If they are not in china, they can't fine them, they are more then able to fight the censors.
i have my own internet. two wireless networks on oposite sides of my house on different subnets. when i noticed someone was hogging all the bandwith i used dnshijacker to resolve all their requests to tubgirl. i always wondered if thats legal.
I would have let this guy go even for stating these opinions privatly. He obviously really does not want to work for Sony. This guy didn't get fired, he quit.
Great idea.
Step 1. Fire everyone who finds legitemite weakness in your product, partner or customer.
As have the USA and the UK. Only difference is they do it in areas where they have no actual defensible jurisdiction at all. Your point?
I never said that oppression is excusible outside of China, but the simple truth is that China is one of the biggest violators of human rights in the world, not the US, not the UK, so your comparison is baseless.
Well, at present it seems more a case of "Everyone outside Texas, plus all the African Americans in Texas", but yeah, you almost have a straight comparisson there. The comparison was that the local (Chinese) government attacked its own citizens on a massive scale. Not that any better to attack anyone, even just one person outside of your borders.
My point is that the atrocities of the CCP are some of the worst in human history, and dealing with them is no different then dealing with any deplorable organization. Like it or not, this is what Google chose to do, and they have an alternative which I stated in my first post.
In reality government here is a lot less interfering with day to day life than in any of the other countries I've lived in. They have a larger list of "unforgivable infringements", and a rather more direct approach to punishment than most places (outside Texas), but it is exceptionally rare that anyone here cares.
Would you justify Fashism under the pretext that they improved the lives of 90% of the population, got Germany out of the depression, made it a world military and economic power, and made tremendous scientific acheivements? There is nothing to "Chill" about, these are lives of millions of people. Imagine if everyone in Texas was systematically killed because of some fucktards dogma. Everytime someone is killed, tourtured, or wrongfully imprisoned it decreases the value of life and freedom for everyone (yours and mine included), and the CCP have been doing this on a massive scale.
You are disappointed in Google? Are you sure that you understand what their situation/predicament is? They simply do NOT have the option of providing an uncensored search engine in Chine at this time, so it is either a censored Google or no google at all. I don't know about you, but I will take whatever I can get. At least now they have a foot in the door.
This is GOOGLE you are talking about. They are the most advanced software company in the world. If a couple of college kids can write Tor what do you think google can do? Of course they have an option. They can fight the censors, they can fight the firewalls, they can make the voice of the billion opressed chinese heard loud in clear throughout China and the rest of the world. There is no "realist" view here. National Socialists killed on the order of 10 million people, Soviet Communists about 20 million people, Chinese Communist party killed over 50 million. Thats FIFTY MILLION PEOPLE!!! Thats like 2.5 Stalins or 5 Hitlers, or 3 Hitlers and a Stalin.
Google has an oportunity to do something though. They are not bound by Chinese law, there is nothing stopping them from getting around the firewall. There are already numreous ways around it anways, Google can easily make them widespread and improve them.
Google can encrypt all the data by simply using ssl. If an ip is blocked to a user, they can route the information through their cache, coral, Tor, or some other netwrok. They can even fight China, by just forsing all the chinese buisnesses to the bottom of the results, and get yahoo and msn to help them as well.
From the article, china is worth 75 million of buisness to google, and thats probably a fraction of what they spend on pasta.
I'm also against the DRM restrictions because I know the purpose of DRM extends well beyond music and videos. Corporations (and even some individuals) need strict control of their private data. I'm concerned that restricting DRM implmentations means entering grey area with respect to controlling data on corporate and shared computers.
Thats exactly how I feel. Imagine if it were to communicate in such a way that only the recepient is able to read the message, and the message would be destroyed by the reading. It would be impossible for anyone to monitor or control the flow of information. It anyone, its the groups that are pushing drm that have the most to loose when it becomes available to the public.
Did ig farben have a choice of selling Zyklon-B to the Nazis? Of course if they didn't somebody else would. But some things are far more important then money, especially when the chineese communist party has commited far worse attrocites against its own people then the national socialist party did in germany.
Its just disguisting to see this happend, especially when a leading edge US tech companies that do it. What happend to "Give me liberty or give me death?" What about all those ideals, and all those people that died fighting opression to give Google a chance to become what it is today. These companies should be fighting a technological war against china, suberting their firewall, enabling their citizens with the information to fight the opressors, not the other way arround.
ever hear of klik? works just like osx dmg's. no install, no passwords, no worries. it actually changed completely how i set up my system now. the only thing thats installed by root are the core components of the os and environment, everything else i just install via klik.
I wonder if software held as much liability as hardware if we would have better software in the market, or if it would essentially hinder sofware development in the long run.
it doesn't do everything that i want it to do. instead of defining my entire program as gpl i would much rather define the interfaces to my program as gpl, lgpl or bsd. this way if someone exports my interfaces using soap or some other marsheling mechanism, the freedoms/restrictions that i allow would propagate throught the wrapper.
currently i can basically seperate my program in a gpl component and a proprietary component and marshall data between them without any restrictions, thus entirelly bypassing the purpose of the license.
