I do agree that watching the dynamics of propagation would be useful, but the easiest method of protection is to use good-safe base systems like BSD/Linux. Regardless of what Microsoft states, they are usually more secure by default.
I realize that this is hard to do because of all the marketing/sales types see about Microsoft beign the future and all, but unless you start with a secure OS, all flaylings will be in vain.

For fear of sounding like an elitest, no, a programmer is not an engineer. I spent time not only understanding the base theories of how stuff works, but showing instructors that I not only understand, but can do (via long tests!!!).
Typically, an engineer thinks on many levels. What I mean by this is that we keep the big picture in mind while dealing with the details ( as Albert Einestien said, "God is in the details..."). People might think that this is trivial, but try it once. We deal with constantly changing requirements as well as changes in the platform (just try to really keep up with where Microsoft is and where they plan on going versus where they end up!!!).
Yes, an engineer can do the work of a code monkey (maybe/usually not as proficient as a well seasoned programmer), but I am damn sure that a programmer cannot do what I do on a daily basis.
Sorry for being a snob, but until I am proven otherwise, it is just my $0.02.

You also need to remember that upto and including 8.0, RH never sold the releases as corporate desktops. I hear what you are saying about the EOL being too short, but you need to make the client aware that the product was bought with a very large misconception: it would be supported forever. Sorry, but that is the way it is.

My guess is that if RH did have deeper pockets, they would support their products longer. People gripe about them, but they have been good to the Linux community (some might argue about KDE though) as a whole.

Now lets go after peoples bitches about Ransom and how he "bitches" about the "freeloaders" in the Linux community. First off, I have read all of his interviews that I can find. I have never seen that quote. Usually that is people saying that he said that. Second, everything that Caldera does for Linux OS is done under the GPL so all can get to the source. To me, he is giving more back to the community than most people who are just running Linux (I put myself in that boat!) Please notice that I put Linux OS because they do write apps like Volution for money. Yes, I said the dirty thing when it comes to Linux, making money. Business's as a rule need to make money to stay in business. I realize that most people in the community don't seem to have a clue about running a business, but let me make it clear as I can. The above is the first and cardinal rule: You need to make money to stay in business.

Oh, buy the way, there are not to many businesses staying afloat on service contracts alone. Look at RedHat as an example.

The moral of my story would appear to be: If you don't like Caldera or the UnitedLinux thing, don't use it. Plan and simple.

People will not bust their hump for an extended period of time while the guy next to him is slacking off. Eventually the first person is going to say "Screw you, I work for me.".
