It does not make the desktop more responsive. Yes, there are many things you can turn off, and that's decent point. I'm singling out the singling out of the theme service though. There is zero performance difference on my 3 year old computer with the service off. Zero. Zip. It doesn't matter if I'm running resource intensive tasks or not, there's no difference. Alt-tabbing, window moving, start menu opening, menu opening, it's all equally as fast.

I'm willing to sacrifice this meg for a bit of aesthetic happiness (obviously not using the default Fisher Price theme).

  11. What about "superzooms" ? on 10 Reasons To Buy a DSLR · · Score: 1

These seem like a pretty good middle-road between DSLRs and basic point & shoot cameras. We recently picked up a Canon S3 IS (seemed to be about half the price of a decent DSLR+lens here in Canada, and we found a good deal).

It does allow control of shutter speed, aperture size, white balance, flash synchronization, focus, etc. It's got an LCD viewfinder, good build quality, image stabilization, fast photo capture and startup times, and one is able to buy lens adapters and other accessories for it. It meets almost all of the points raised in the article. The only big downside I can find is that the sensor isn't quite as good as a decent DSLR's. It's fine for most uses, but at higher ISO speeds the noise is far worse. Accessory availability is also reduced, but for most entry-level/casual folks this likely doesn't matter.

You definately don't need a 256MB video card for Aero, and you don't need much of one at all if you're content on using the 2D interface. Vista RC1 works fine* on my laptop with its Geforce Go 7400 with 64 MB VRAM / 192 MB shared RAM. It also works perfectly dandy on my PC with a 128MB Radeon 9800 Pro (though understandably better than the laptop card).

*nVidia's drivers are horrible at the moment, and my laptop's GPU doesn't have official support yet (though an ini hack will force it to work). Aero runs fine, but any 3D app running under it loses a considerable chunk of performance. Open GL apps, while accelerated, are practically unbearable to use.
