  1. Re:Bluetooth AND infrared on Everybody Loves the Wii · · Score: 1

Calling it a "sensor bar" is probably just because that's what Nintendo themselves are calling it. "Sensor" sounds all hightech and fancy-like.

Some of us think about plot, also. The best games have enough of both. If I just wanted gameplay, I'd play Tetris. If I just wanted varied gameplay, I'd play Neverball. If I just wanted plot, I'd watch a movie. If I just wanted (somewhat) interactive plot, I'd read a Choose Your Own Adventure book.

Yes, some games focus on story more than gameplay. So what? Why bring Tetris into it, of all things?

Do you know how many games I've played and enjoyed which had either no plot or one that is incredibly easy to disregard? Tribes, Super Smash Brothers, Pikmin, Battlefield games, Flight Simulators of any sort, most RTSs, most any game with "Mario" on it, any racing game, and many many more. How many of those were marketed on the plot?
  3. Re:Bluetooth AND infrared on Everybody Loves the Wii · · Score: 1

    So, concisely:

The infrared signal from the "Sensor Bar" is used by the Wiimote for locational purposes. All actual two-way communication with the console occurs via Bluetooth.

If the Bluetooth interface is not obfuscated and it is easy to reverse engineer the sucker, all that's needed are a couple of infrared LEDs seperated exactly the same distance as the bar's.

And I'm one of the ones who was toying around with getting that section just right. Anandtech reported it that way, though I don't know if it's properly cited in the article. (We had some semi-conflicting information from IGN who actually called the LEDs "sensors", without going into more depth. They also went to say that the Wiimote has an optical sensor and described the bit about it being confused by bright lights, which kind of contradicted the "sensor" thing. IGN just screws things up.)

I always feel far too restricted in that game, though. I like to be able to look up and down freely, without having to stop to do so. It is easier to control and gets over that aspect, but it limits freedom, which creates its own problems. The jumping puzzles, for instance, are a pain in the neck. It also makes the game's combat a tad easy (besides the bosses), as all you do is hit the lock button, fire a couple times, and repeat. You can wipe out huge numbers of enemies in seconds, no sweat.

I for one like that the next Metroid Prime game is apparently going for a more keyboard/mouse style, with the Wii controller and the nunchuck all that jazz.

Using the accelerometers, it would make no difference. The sensor bar seems to detect where the controller is in space or where it's pointing at or something (they still havn't outright said its purpose). Done right, with that and the accelerometers combined it should work fairly well at any distance. At least, you'd think. Might not turn out that way in practice, but at least the controller has a local reference point in addition to the bar.

Probably. I'm referring to pagans who call themselves pagans, ie. some Wiccans, neo-druids and such. They use the "fact" that their religion is ancient to add credibility to it, either to make themselves look less silly or to recruit people. Faith is faith, you've got it or you don't, and coming up with excuses for it just proves that you don't.

It just annoys me. It makes them seem somewhat like they're attention whores / sheep / etc.

Hindus don't often outright refer to themselves as pagans. That's not their identity. They're Hindus, and they call themselves that. As for people worshipping the Greek gods, chances are damn good that they're not doing it in the same way or by the same traditions that the Ancient Greeks did. In any case, I was specifically referring to people that identify themselves as "pagan", the large number of which are actually following a rather new religion that borrows gods or superficial aspects from ancient religions.
