IBM would be the most obvious candidate as Java and particularly open-source Java offerings (such as the Jikes compiler and Eclipse IDE) are a big part of their software activities.

Java isnt just part of IBMs software "activity", its a HUGE part of their hardware strategy. IBM has invested a lot of money in Linux. What makes it easy for applications to switch from NT/Solaris/Other platforms to linux: Java. This could explain why they have invested so much money in Websphere/Websphere studio etc.

A small business that employs people who go out in the field....Think of this scenario..Small business ABC inc has three employees out in the field servicing TVs. A New Customer calls the ABC inc office and wants urgent service. Which service technician would you send here? If your employees had GPS phones, you could use software that automatically tracks them and tells you which technician is closest to the new customer.

This may be a contrived example, but you get the idea

There is another application being developed that i am not so thrilled about. If you have a GPS phone, someone knows you are on highway X near a IHOP. If IHOP is a paying customer, they can send you a message on your cell phone telling you about the specials they have at this particular location.

All mobile phones sold in the US will be required to have some sort of GPS tracking system. They call it e911 or something. The idea is that if you make an emergency call from your cell phone, the 911 operator should be able to pin point your location to within 2 city blocks.

I dont think this would work. AFAIK, you can only port numbers from the pool of Cell Phones i.e. if you have an ATT wireless phone, you can now carry over the number to Sprint. Unlike Europe, you WILL have to buy a new phone. Most phones are sold at discounted prices only if you sign a service agreement. If you take your number to another carrier, not only is your old phone useless, you will also have to pay the full price of the phone.

Laptop Makers Don't Want This Intel Inside The new Centrino comes with a disappointing wireless chip

Too bad PC makers don't agree. Dell Computer Corp. (DELL ), Hewlett-Packard Co. (HPQ ), and other top manufacturers are eager to harness the extra power and efficiency of the new Pentium, but they are underwhelmed by Intel's wireless technology, which they say transmits data more slowly than those of rivals such as Broadcom (BRCM ).

What's more, notebook manufacturers perceive an ulterior motive behind Intel's Centrino launch. While Otellini says Intel is combining features in one package "so everything works [well] together," some PC makers fear Intel could boost prices if it were to become the sole supplier for most of a notebook's innards. And even if Intel didn't raise prices, PC makers say they'd prefer to continue buying components from numerous suppliers so they can better set themselves apart from competitors.
