This is probably stating the obvious, but I think this list also indicates that the under-17 population accounts for a significant proportion of ticket sales. With the exception of a few, most of these movies definitely have qualities (in part or fully) that appeal to a younger crowd.

  2. Distro Doesn't Matter on Linux Desktop Guide · · Score: 2, Insightful
I personally don't believe the distro version really matters. Why? Because if this is really geared at a first-time computer user, and they are *really* going to read a manual starting at page 1, then they will be just as apt to go looking for and read the docs that accompany a distro that they do want to install/use.

I know from personal experience as an IT guy dealing with many users every day that most of them don't want a manual and don't even want to know any more than they absolutely need in order to get by.

Computers simply have not evolved to the Star-Trek like devices that only require some vague verbal commands, yet understand exactly what you want. Until that happens, most people will be 'afraid' of them and only use them in a 'black box' way to do something cool or necessary. Think of folks using their PC to fire up IE and read Hotmail, or using a computer that's packaged up as an ATM. [Yes, I'm a Mozilla user, but IE is still what most people unconsciously use as their browser!]

  3. Re:SG-1 Continuity? on Stargate Atlantis Tomorrow · · Score: 2, Interesting
It's too bad that they (the shows' producers/writers) have already stated that they don't want too much or any intermingling of plots and characters between shows. I usually find that really interesting. It makes it seem like the show is really part of a bigger picture. I think it's something audiences in general like as well. After all, it's done all the time.

Someone else made the comment that you can figure out 90% of what's going on just by watching one show. I disagree. I got into SG-1 in about the 4th season, and if I didn't know someone who had been watching it all along, it would have taken me significantly more time to get up to speed. That's another thing that I find compelling about the show - there *is* a lot of 'backstory' that drives each episode. They are all part of a much larger story arc. Think Bablyon 5.

Unless I got it mixed up, I think they may have goofed already: Why is Dr Weir involved with the Atlantis program when she said in this season's 1st episode of SG-1 that she was going to be an ambassador of sorts among all the nations that now know about the Stargate and the various aliens?

Other than that, I'm really looking forward to this new show. Hopefully, double the workload for this group of writers/producers/etc. won't result in half the quality that has been present in SG-1 so far.

  4. Thanks Office Depot on Office Depot Wants to Recycle Your Old Computer · · Score: 1
It's amazing how easily people will throw stuff into the trash without a second thought for the environment or that the equipment could actually be reused. Maybe folks need to get pictures of trash heaps and landfills seared into their consciousness.

I applaud Office Depot and HP for their efforts. Perhaps it will stir other vendors into action.

According to this press release, HP already has 2 pretty large facilities for recycling electronic equipement. They already have a pretty decent recycling program for their equipment and are currently offering a coupon when you recycle and then purchase new hardware from them. [Nope, I'm not affiliated with HP!]

I personally wouldn't mind paying an additional few dollars for each piece of computer hardware or electronics if I knew that I could easily recycle it at the end of its life. The recyle option should also be transferrable to anyone that I sold it to. After all, what's $5 more on a $500 product?

  5. Re:I've been happy with NetB@nk on What's the Best Online Financial Solution? · · Score: 1

I second this recommendation. I've used Net.B@nk now for about 6 months now, and I've been completely happy with it. They've upgraded their site, so that logins and navigation take seconds instead of a minute or two. They've got free checks (very few banks offer this) and postage-paid envelopes so you can deposit your checks. And of course, the free bill-pay is a huge timesaver. They also respond via e-mail very quickly and have extended telephone customer service hours.

Originally, I wanted a Wells Fargo account but being the giant that they are, they closed my account because of a silly mistake I made in the early days. Well, I was pissed and never went back, and have been very happy that I tried Net.B@nk.

As for brokerage accounts, I have a Datek acct. Originally, I had an Ameritrade acct but switched when I realized that limit orders were cheaper with Datek and Datek had real-time updates to your account as well as the real-time quote streamer and trading info for their associated ECN, Island.
I've had no problems with Datek in the past 9 months and their customer service has been very good to date.

Perhaps I've been lucky with my banking/brokerage experiences but it does take some work on your part to make sure it stays that way!
