  1. Go read her twitter feed on US CTO Choice Down To a Two-Horse Race · · Score: 1

Padma twits on a regular basis and after working at cisco, reading her twits and an article by Chambers saying the office of CTO in cisco has 0 resources I feel pretty confident saying she's useless.

Seriously go read what she has posted, her job at Cisco consists of going to events that Chambers can't be bothered to attend. She doesn't manage anyone, she doesn't accomplish anything and her leaving Cisco would only cause a brief shuffling of HR records to note she's no longer receiving an inflated salary and options.

I tried to find a project she has headed or something she has accomplished during her time at Cisco, can't find a single thing pretty amazing to have such a high profile position and yet accomplish nothing.

I hope people realize the whole question is a hypthetical one.

"But what should I do if Amir or someone like him from a country associated with Bad Stuff posts on our own forums looking for technical advice?"

The whole thing is a what if, Amir designed and built the plane on his own without any help from the blogger. The blogger is simply afraid of what happens "if" Amir happens to ask a technical question and oh god help him he might give him an answer.

Iran certainly doesn't have any universities or access to technical books so this forum would be the only source they would have for such advanced knowledge.

I would suggest Chris stay far far away from anyone whose country might do "Bad Stuff" like invade other countries or I dunno torture people in secret prisons.

Ok I am glad everyone all of a sudden cares this much about the bloggers in my country. But a few facts.

    * I can't get to hoders website right now but I don't belive that anyone has verified the web blocking.
    * While blogging is popular in Iran it's not the next great revolution. It's a way for people to talk, browse for porn and do all the other things most college students do in the US.
    * The Iranian people are capable of figuring out a government for themselves. When theycouldn't take the Shah anymore they dealt with him.
    * As the student demonstrations showed a few years ago the regime still has a lot of backers, eventually Iranians will figure out what they really want and how much they care about fighting for it.

In the meantime you can get a list of some english blogs written by iranians over at http://blogsbyiranians.com/
it appears to be down at the moment since I suspect it's hosted at hoders server but there is always the google cache if you want to look at it right now.

Ok I've been living in SV for about 6 months now so I feel pretty comfortable commenting on this. The problem is not so much the "geek" personality or lack thereof as it is the fact that there aren't any girls here. The female/male ratio at my company is less than 1/10. I never had any problems finding a girlfriend or meeting people when I was in college but in SV there seems to be a wall around people. Most people are concerened about the next big IPO and 6 figure salaries are not enough. After living here for 6 months I've put a 5 year cap on my time in SV. After that you'll find me somewhere in the pacific on a Pacific Sea Craft boat. And if finding a girlfriend and having a social life means that much to you, you'll do the same.

You obvviously haven't spent a lot of time in feminist academia. I have seen women get by with doing less in the CS department all the time. And after I took a women's studies class my senior year I met a series of the "rabid feminazis". Now granted there are a lot more normal feministes out there who have legitimate concerns about their place in society than there are feminazis but the feminazis do existe and they do try to twist the system into their favor as much as possible.

I think everyone agrees that security through obscurity is a bad idea but as Carmack explains in the world of modems you don't really have a choice, you need the performance to sell games. Now if some e-commerce site decided to do this then I would be worried but this is just a game we are talking about. I could see if e-bay had released their source code and people had decided to hack it so that they could cheat but this is just silly.

Sooner or later we are going to go down the road of creating a single cell organisme and I can already see the FOX special "When E. Coli attack".
There are a lot of benefits to this, the sooner we figure out how to creat genetic bacteria the sooner we can find cures for disases that require gene changes like Sickle Cell and Huntingtons disease.

If you really want to teach you will have to actually go to the university just so the people there can see you. It doesn't sound like you have the time to do this if you wan to keep your full time job. IMO the BS is worth it only if you cann't take the upper level classes without it. I learned a lot in my upper level classes but I probably could have taken them day 1 and done just as well. As for the industry it depends on the company you will see people who post that you don't need the degree and people who post that you need the degree, at the end the issue is what you want. Getting a Masters just for $$$ is not worth it and again IMO if you want to learn more you can always buy books so the Masters in only usefull if you don't think you can learn on your own or if you want someone to explain concepts to you.
