Thats the truth, anything you think you might get "free" is always paid for, by the taxpayers in this case. So you might get fast internet, but its going to cost you quite a bit I bet.
There's a good reason to have GPS...you have to be in the range of at least 3 cell phone towers to triangulate, and the accuracy gets better with more. So if you are in the middle of nowhere (like where I live;) and have (weak) cell phone service but probably are not in range of 3 towers, it won't work.
Thats why they use GPS, not a problem being in the range of 3 satelites.
Heh I remember when the software industry started putting stuff like Safedisc on games. Well of course, if you want to make a copy and just crack the exe file that works, but a more elegant solution is using CloneCD which 90% of the time makes a perfect working copy. I'm sure this will be the same way, if the data is there, people CAN get to it, just a matter of how long it takes;)
Adding something...
I have a 1.2 ghz T'bird athlon, 512 ram and a radeon 8500. I'd call that a mid level system, not incredibly fast but still reasonbly fast in games. I never noticed any speed issues on my system, not with the latest X and KDE...running the Liquid interface and all the eye candy turned on. Although I use Gentoo and started from stage1, so everything is pretty optimized:)
I agree, getting the fonts in X to look great is a nightmare, BUT it can be done. I have fonts in Gentoo running a LOT nicer then the ones in Windows, and not just some of them, all of my fonts look great.
A few things to try:
-Get MS's webfonts if you don't already, you might hate MS but they are still good looking fonts.
-Try turning off the bytecode interpreter in freetype. Not going to explain how to do that here, just search.
-I don't have any more because turning off the bytecode interpreter fixed the problems for me.
Biggest hurdle IMO is games.
In fact thats the only reason linux is not my primary desktop OS. Yes I have it on my desktop, but no I barely ever use it. I have Gentoo (which I love) customized, with KDE looking beautifully with awesome fonts and a great office program (openoffice)...but most games I play don't run on Linux. And don't tell me WineX, tried it, pain in the ass to get running right, and it was too slow for me to justify not using Win2000.
Of course on the server end, I love linux, use it every time I can:)
