    I'm using a 17" DEC VRT17-HA that I got for free from work. Its about 7 years old (or something like that) and is still beautiful. Bright, sharp, and free...doesn't get better than that.

    I have a Dell Inspiron 4000 (its a 1 ghz p3 to put that in perspective). It wasn't the top of the line when I got it but pretty close. Its a great laptop, medium size and weight, 14" very sharp and bright screen, and nothing broke yet.

    I'm not sure you can get those anymore, but I just wanted to vouch for Dell's laptops, they are quite good. Never used an apple laptop but from what I hear they are good too. It comes down to personal preference from your gf I think...ask her!

    Get some cheap web host that gives you CGi support ( I'd recommend not a free one, their CGI support sucks ass), and use Cgi-proxy. Its a free cgi script that is quite a nice little proxy. It also has built in ssl support. Nice for at a school or workplace where something you need (or want ;) is blocked by an overzealous filter.

    I run FreeBSD on my firewall/NAT system, and I don't recall ever rebooting it except in the case of a power failure. The *BSD systems are quite secure out of the "box". I don't know why anyone would really say they are dying.

    The manufacturers want you to go buy cartridges, instead of profiting on the printer itself, they now charge outrageous amounts and profit on the ink.

    Only problem I've ever had with my laser is some minor paper jams, and they were all caused by shitty or misloaded paper (damn kids).

    is a DecLaser 3500. Damn old thing too but it prints nice and has huge paper trays and full PostScript support (not shitty little HP stuff).

    Anyway, the reason the printers get cheaper is because they want people to go buy new ones more often. And it works, therefore they make money.

    I know I personally don't care. I don't think I've ever upgraded a CPU without doing the mobo too. Since features like FSB, DDR and such keep evolving, and boards aren't that expensive anyway, by the time I get around to an upgrade I do at least the CPU and mobo together.

    I would guess most poeple are like this, so I don't forsee much loss of business for Intel (perhaps a little, but probably not)

    Now thats plain silly, mirroring without permission is probably illegal, besides being a major pain in the ass. However no one is under any obligation whatsoever to ask before linking. In case you didn't realize, by providing a public resource, you accept that the public just might come visit it (what a concept)

    is that most people don't understand that Windows is not the universal basis of good operating systems. People expect everything to work the same as it did on Windows. Of course that has to be the case for wide-spread desktop acceptance, but IMO that is not the way it should be.

    At least Linux is reliable and after you get used to working with it, is powerful and useful. And also I don't seem to have so many damn device driver problems as in Windows...with those clueless vendors writing garbage drivers (I'm thinking Creative and ATI at the moment, grumble)

    I agree very much with that advice.

    Just please don't use the TV as a replacement for you...if you don't build trust and talk with them and care about their interests now, they will never come to you with problems in the future. When they have trouble in school, friends, etc. you want to be the one they come to. Build that up from the start.

    I can't imagine solitary confinement either, IMO that qualifies as torture, except maybe for prisoners who are violent in prison and can't be controlled any other way.

    He has not been arrested? So when they come to your job with assault rifles and body armor and throw you in the back of a cop car and put you in prison thats NOT being arrested? Perhaps he is a terroist, but honestly its irrelevant. Evil criminal or innocent man doesn't matter, he should be charged and given his civil rights or let go.

    And the best part is that while in jail for doing nothing, you can lose your job, lose your house, and not see your family for as long as they feel "necessary". And of course at the end, they let you out with that sorry and not do anything to help rebuild your life.

    Ok think here, DVD is NOT A MOVIE FORMAT. Really...its not. Therefore the method of distribution is completely irrelevant to the quality of the data on those discs. Yes, it probably would take several DVDs for the movie, if they sent it a nice quality, although that depends on the effeciency of the compression.

    Anyway, 35mm film isn't all that impressive either, ever look closely at the movie screen? Its not a good resolution at all, its just that you sit back from it enough that it looks really nice.

    What the hell are you talking about? Have you ever watched a DVD that you bought in the store? It sure seems to fit to me, and thats with MPEG-2 encoding...using newer compression schemes gets you a lot better.

    And for all the bad jokes about WMP (which I personally hate), they probably won't use the same player program, unless they really are extremely stupid.

    Hmm got to love the old Digital DECpc XL 566 (thats a Pentium 66 mhz) that I recently replaced as my NAT gateway...its something like 9 or 10 years old, maybe more, and not a SINGLE component has failed. Nothing...
    But thats pretty irrelevant to modern computer equipment, things aren't built the same today. (Ever open an old pdp/whatever and find lead bricks in the bottom to keep it from tipping over?)

    In fact on a Dell Inspiron 4000 you can just hit Fn+F7 to change between scaled and regular text modes. But FB is still better :)
