  1. 60Gb cap is common in Canada (Ontario) on Time Warner Expanding Internet Transfer Caps To New Markets · · Score: 1

Caps on bandwidth use have been in place here for ages - usually at 60gb per month. I avoid streaming videos and excessive downloads, but manage get really close to the cap since others in the house are not as careful.

Online gaming can eat through bandwidth, so we use lower-quality settings where the games support it, and avoid music, etc too.

I have been envious of you in the US since you did not have these caps and could watch your favorite programs, etc online. These caps are crap, but there's not much you can do to stop them.

All you can do is avoid the higher-bandwidth stuff in favor of lower quality or...dare I say it....plain TEXT!

  2. Imagination, Pen, Paper on Tools & Surprises For a Tech Book Author? · · Score: 1

(a pencil and eraser work well too)

In the end, it comes down to what you put on the page - how you get it there is entirely up to you. You could argue that the publisher wants you to send your text in Word format, but that does not mean you need to work in Word to write.

Tools offer excuses to shift the blame for missing due dates, avoiding the work of writing, and make it easy to find distractions as you discover what all those shiny knobs do.

I go old-school first (pencil and paper) and switch to Word once I have enough content. I don't use any formatting in Word, doing that much later on, freeing me to focus on the task of writing.

While you are humiliating them, what do you expect them to do? If they are butchers their response should not surprise you. Would you passively allow yourself to be humiliated?

Like I said, this is their time and the world at large is mature enough to address China's 'issues' - we should be setting an example and not taking this opportunity to point and shout at them.

  4. Chinese sentiment is understandable on Chinese Blogs, Netizens React To the Tibet Issue · · Score: 1

I can see why the Chinese are upset with the west. We (the west) say the abuse human rights, tell them they are bad for what they did in Tiananmen square, and use the Olympic Torch Relay as a platform to further our message.

How would you like it if someone bashed your country that way, regardless if the bashing had truth and fact behind it or not? Do you expect them to simply listen and watch? Are we really that naive? What did you think they would do?

This is China's time to be proud of itself as a nation and as a people - let's celebrate with them and address the other issues in a more appropriate forum and manner.

  5. Re:I call bullshit on this on Finding New Code · · Score: 1

I don't think that is true in all cases. Often others' code has subtle bugs, or implementation details that cause problems later on. While you might get a boost in productivity using someone else's code, that can quickly be lost when you have to go back and either fix your code due to some side effect or fix the other person's code as a result of bugs, short cuts, etc.

Moreover, with differences in coding styles, it can be hard to wrap your head around someone else's code. A solution is to use standard idioms to make the code more readable.

  6. (banned and new) Drugs, banned pesticides, etc on Testing Drugs on India's Poor · · Score: 2, Insightful

I have been to India on several occasions and find it irresponsible of not only companies but also other countries to sell banned drugs, pesticides and a wrath of other 'goodies' in India. I saw first hand pesticides that are banned in North America being used openly, old drugs, and of course questionable mixtures of leaded gasoline, kerosene, and others thereby creating a lot of pollution.

Given that India is considered to be a developing nation, it is irresponsible of the 'west' to dump their banned substances there and in other countries. This creates new caste system of sorts - Westerners get good, safe chemicals, while the rest goes 'elsewhere' - thereby needlessly affecting millions of people.

Unfortunately, this issue is not headline news and does not get the attention it deserves.

Rather if the child is really interested they'll keep nagging the parents and make them go out and buy the whole dvd, if they even do that.

Good point; however, lots of parents might not even bother with it just because their kids are likely to keep on nagging them.

If a parent decides to get the device for their kids I see a couple of non-technical issues:

    • Young children like to see a conclusion to whatever activity that they're engaged in so giving them a bit of something with only a possibility of getting some of the rest later is uninteresting.
    • Older kids have friends and news spreads quickly so only a small number of kids will have interest in acquiring new episodes/segments.

And, as others mentioned previously, the device is likely to be hacked in some way which is very interesting in itself but will likely contribute to terminating the entire program.

The best option for movies, IMHO, is to play part of the movie in the restaurant and keep the Happy Meal offering the same - to get the best of both benefits.

  8. Communities R Us on A Recipe for Newspaper Survival in the Internet Age · · Score: 1

People that read newspapers are interested in information - not community. When I pick up a newspaper I do that because I can filter what I want to read and when I want to read it. I really don't care who's opinions are on the OpEd page, nor the columnist's names (although I'm starting to get familiar with a few writers).

I think the /. crowd is focused too much on building communities around information. Communities are great - I'm a huge advocate - but they have their place and a newspaper site isn't it.

Newspapers are still important and they don't need an on-line presence to be successful today. I believe that a newspaper's survival is based on providing credible, non-biased, insightful reporting - nothing more.

MiniMsft is taking the easy way out. Complain, find similar-minded people, acquire a following, and repeat. It's basically a form of passive aggression.

A better approach is to discuss these issues with the direct manager and, if necessary, the manager's manager. Take a rational approach: state the problems, describe why they're problems for you, describe what would make you happy, and go the extra mile by describing how you'd approach the problem if you were your own manager.

If you do this all at once you'll come across as pushy; however, approach it relatively slowly giving your manager time to respond.

Employment is a partnership, so treat it like one. If employees complain about their employers before giving them a chance to respond, then the employees get what they deserve (reprimanded).

MiniMsft sounds like a relatively young person, or someone with little business experience. While the blog is interesting, to a degree, it is by no means definitive...more like, "for novelty use only" :)

  12. Respect for home and family on Cindy Smart Knows Better Than To Say Naughty Words · · Score: 1

    >> Just what are we protecting our children from?

It's not a matter of protecting or shielding them. I'm a father of two boys (aged 6 and 11), and both can swear; however, they do not do that at home because I don't allow that language at home. I'm trying to foster respect for the family and home (any family and home for that matter).

I think that's the underlying goal - swear outside but don't bring it home. The doll's design seems to support that.
