Where does the "vendor" accountability lie, with open source, if the software is inherently the cause of a failure/screwup/loss? This must be a huge consideration in a public sector payroll role. Is there such thing as vendor accountability with any major dist?
Would anyone recommend this as an "I know sweet FA about firewalls" learning/info book. I have some cursory (fundamental) knowledge, bu I would love to get my hands on a good implementation beginners guide. Any other recommendations would be appreciated.
This is somewhat off topic...
What do all the worlds geeks DO with their PDA's?
Aside from email, notes, adresses? Seems to be an expensive use of my already premium pocket space. Is it just the "gadget factor" or are there folks who really rely on this type of device? BTW this one does sound cool, just hard to justify.
That clears a lot of things up for me...cheers.
I find the discussion of patents/IP/copyright is very volatile around here. It seems there is considerable discussion and angst about intentionally securing the rights to vapourware as cash in the bank. Nice to see a clear point to the contrary.
It seems that the chokehold a patent-holder has on their idea/thing/whatever is destrying the competition process. The patent office seems to be nothing more than a hopeful money grab for people too lazy to do anything but put forth an idea until some fool comes along with the implementation and you litigate him poor and you rich. Seems to antithesize the whole idea of patents.
IANAL - I know next to nothing of law except Matlock. I was under the impression that any ruling could be used as a precedent. If it must be officially made a precedent, is that done at the time of the ruling? Who makes the decision?
Not to sound like a wicked geek, but Lucas covered his ass on that whole R2 not flying later thing in a pre movie website. The site was designed to familiarize everyone with the state of the galaxy, since 10 years had passed since EP1. It was laid out as a news portal, with stories about politics, sports, business etc. There was an article posted that stated the R2 line had a limited warranty on their built in boosters as they were unreliable, or hard to maintain, or something. My guess is that R2 never used them again, because they broke, and were unfixable. BTW the page was holonetnews.com. It's actually pretty cool if you are a minutae-hound like me. I suck.
How perfectly reflective/shiny would the target have to ben to successfully survive this? Also, how long can the laser sustain fire? Curiosities. And I was too lazy to read the article.

Like starring in a movie with Steve Gutenberg?
Is there a site listing a matrix of the possible links that could survive a slashdotting?
