The reason M$ has not been willing to show the windows code is that they have borrowed unix-code to the NT. Especially the network and memory handling routines come to mind first. Now they licence it and get off the hook. If(when) MS buys SCO, how can they harm Linux. Definately MS will try it best to kill Linux. And money is no issue.
The problem is real but there are severe diffulties on the road to global patents.
1. Many developing countries have no interest in commiting to such international agreements. They see the cheap labour their only weapon to get to the international market. And they cannot afford much research.
2. The consept of patent varies a lot. As a well known example many ideas patented in US could never get a patent in Europe.
3. Many countries are trying to protect their own industry and reluctant to accept unbiased treatment of foreign and own patents. That the real world situation. And I'm now talking about the "civililized"/rich countries with many international contracts.
Feedback is a great tool to motivate people, and I now mean especially the positive feedback. The system described above seems nice, but the teachers should use it (also) for good deeds. Try to give every day as many positive as negative feedbacks and You will be amazed of the effect ! And of course the security stinks. Now the neighbor could see how our kids are doing. That's untolerable !
Definitive facts
Iraqi military threath is minimal.
Iraqi may support major terrorist attacts.
USA and other countries are not more secure after Iraq operation than before, because even after Iraq demolition there will be several countries/groups capable of major terrorist attacts.
Opinions
USA wants to show its power. It wants to get into a position with a power-of-veto on other countries internal affairs. (Such as "who is Irag's president". Any president can produce weapon of mass destrucion and Saddam Hussein is not himself any greater threath than leaders on Libya, N-Korea, Iran,...)
Conclusion
Where does this lead ?
Hardly to a safer world. The future will show the real objectives and how they were achieved/failed.
The SCO lawsuit is not preventing copying Linux cd's as timothy wrote !
Software images just has a non-competement agreement with Microsoft.
You need the social security number system fast ! Imagine handling a database without any unique identifier...
To be discriminated from the criminals is a basic right and a true identifier for individuals is A Good Thing.
And I'm not representing the authorities or the secret police.
"Humans are the only living species in genus homo, currently."
