I'd like to follow that up with a dissemination of correct information. You are a "fanboi fanboy". Thanks, just wanted to clear that up before this thread got out of hand.
I still don't see what the problem with old style ballots are.
There aren't any. As I've said several times before: it's worked since the beginnings of the democratic process and it will continue to work just the same until the end of time. DO NOT FUCKING CHANGE IT.
Of course there wouldn't be any greedy government contracts to supply the machines, there'd be no political drama over who gets those contracts, which side will be able to more easily affect the final outcome in their favor, and there wouldn't be anyone thinking of those that cannot possibly vote because they can't read or write!
Keep the fucking paper ballots and stop wasting taxpayer dollars and our collective time coming up with shit that doesn't need to be fixed.
We're also old enough to remember when many states had the legal drinking age a 18....but, were blackmailed into raising to 21 due to highway fund witholding....
My comment was from the last year and thus why I mentioned it. Your's was not. I don't ever remember an 18 year old drinking age.
I'm old enough to remember the country-wide 55 mph. federal mandate that was put in place durng to the last energy crises. States that did not comply with the mandated maximum speed limit (I think Wyoming was one) lost their federal funding for highways and transportation.
We're all old enough to remember lowering the DUI limit from.10 to.08 because if your state didn't they would lose that same federal funding.
It's a lot of fun snapping pictures at a party and having them immediately uploaded where they can be displayed on a big screen and shared with everyone.
I use a mobile device and am uploading pictures almost immediately to my own gallery where ever I am. I need to have E/GPRS and the camera's image quality sucks. For me to be able to upload the same photos to my gallery from nearly wherever I am (with wireless available -- which in this day and age is fairly frequently) would be sweet.
That is EXACTLY what I'm looking for. For the commenter that it's a "selective market", I can't disagree more. It's just that people aren't accustomed to that kind of ability and obviously aren't aware of the advantages.
I normally vacation on Hilton Head Island in SC. Been going there pretty much yearly since I was 9. Now that I'm married I have a timeshare on the island for the same week that I have been going my whole life.
This year we attempted to trade the timeshare (which used to be cake with RCI) but found that our choices (we wanted to go to Montana) were limited and RCI was being difficult. Because we traded out we weren't able to get back to our usual location in Hilton Head so we settled on nearby Edisto Beach, SC.
I have never been to Edisto Beach and knew nothing of it other than it's location on a map and what a few websites said about it. I immediately went to Flickr, searched for Edisto Beach and scrolled through the results. After finding someone who I felt might want to answer some questions for me, I fired off a message and asked for some suggestions.
Now, while I could have done something like that years ago via various Internet communication mediums, photo-sharing sites have really stepped up the process IMHO. While I don't personally use Flickr (I won't pay to host my photos, I'm happy to host them myself) for my photos, I do enjoy the service that they provide for others to do so.

Nice Trollfood but Bush *is* evil in more ways than China. China is openly monitoring their people and openly blocking shit they don't like. That's just one downside to living in that country.
Bush, OTOH, does all the illegal domestic spying under false pretenses and behind a shroud of secrecy.
The only thing China is guilty of publicly ignoring their constitution. Bush hates the Constitution but pretends to be fighting for it all while eroding our civil liberties behind our backs.
I still want to be able to feel the buttons when I'm driving and in the dark. I also touch type on my mobile device now because I get tactile feedback. I won't get that with the iPhone.
The other fancy dancy things rock but the lack of a keyboard sucks.
So if these options really make pages load faster, offer less memory drain, and even feed the dog, why aren't they a part of the settings to begin with?
Firefox, while better than IE7, is a fucking hog and getting worse by the release. Why should users, who are already iffy about switching to Firefox, have to go through archaic setup commands in order to have the browser work well?
Fair use might as well be stricken from the books as a legacy law only applicable to pre-DRM works. Don't like it? Tough.
Who the fuck are you to say something like that? This fucking battle is not over. Our rights trump their ability to make money.
WE ARE NOT TO STAND BY WHILE THEY TAKE OUR RIGHTS AWAY! Just because lawmakers are easily influenced by money and are ever so helpful in ensuring that their pockets remain full does not mean that we should roll over, play dead, and take it in the ass while the copyright holders extend their life expectancies, revenue streams, and shit-eating grins.
I guess you could be a shining example of exactly what they want to accomplish. Congratulations.
And all the other networks (*cough* MIT *cough*) that are hoarding them for no good reason. This entire discussion, happening over and over and over again only on Slashdot it seems, is pointless. We aren't running out of space -- it's just over allocated.
It's "beautiful" if you like wearing what appears to be a woman's handbag over your shoulder. I don't care for the way it looks at all. I want something that 2.25 lbs and connects to wireless networks that doesn't make me look like I'm utilizing a fashion accessory.
Perhaps they should just sell it like every other laptop except tout its ~14 hour battery life, weight, and thickness.
The unit's primarily designed for entirely wireless communications with reconfigurable antennae able to switch between the Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and WiMAX links the laptop's envisaged to maintain.
WiMAX? What about E/GPRS? That would encompass a lot more coverage area than the ill-fated WiMAX.
Or more like, "Since we can't do anything about you hacking it because Fair Use still trumps our payoffs to legislators, we're going to 'let' you do something that's already allowed by law."
I like this much better than the entire CCTV surveillance. The camera just sees what the officer sees. So no blatant invasion of privacy as we see with the CCTV system.
I don't know what the laws are like in the UK but just because an officer of the law is seeing something doesn't mean it isn't an invasion of your privacy. By standing in any particular location doesn't suddenly make the nature of your surroundings different.
But since then I've seen too many half-assed Google projects (especially around rss feeds: the Google reader for example is terrible compared to a competitor like Bloglines).
Sorry, I disagree. While I don't care for online RSS readers at all (and don't use them), I much prefer the Google Reader UI to that of Bloglines.
Google recently redid the presentation of the statistics service they aquired (Google Analytics), making it worse.
What about it do you think is worse? I love the fact that I can easily change the reporting timeline and add new items to the dashboard, etc. The interface is MUCH better and much more informative.
I love being able to drill everything down and then drag the most drilled down portion over to the front page for future viewing.
Google already gets my feed itself through feedfetcher and it is one of the few subscribers to my feedburner feed. It also subscribes itself to several other feeds (bloglines).
I don't see what good it does Google to own this company.
Especially when you are using Google Analytics on the site! Someone searched *my* site for a strange keyword (misspelling of entertainment as intertainment) and within seconds Googlebot hit my site with the same search URL.
That made me realize just how fucked up Google's abilities are.
I wasn't talking to him either. My point was that his argument was dumb. People want their traffic prioritized however *THEY* see fit and if VoIP traffic is given more priority than Foo then a portion of people not using VoIP will be pissed.
I think certain types of traffic should be given more or less preference, because I need my VoIP calls to stay connected, and have a reasonable level of sound quality, and I think that is important enough that it can take a few extra seconds for someone to download their videos.
How cute for you but I think that VoIP traffic is completely unnecessary. I already pay for a land line phone as required by my DSL. However, I don't like to pay for videos and I think that your VoIP calls should be able to take a backseat to my 4mbit download of porn from http://empornium.us/
See how that works?
ISPs shouldn't oversell their bandwidth (mine doesn't seem to as I get exactly what they advertise) and it's THEIR fucking problem when people start using the bandwidth for more than e-mail, CNN, and the occasional 1.5MB download from CNET.
Americans could live 10 miles from their workplaces... if they wanted to settle for "tiny" residences and forgo the huge lawns. But they look at the kind of house that they could buy if they live 50 miles away for much cheaper and they decide that spending two hours a day in traffic is worth it. Personally, I'm not in that category, but thats just me.
For me it's the simple fact that where ever I live the lawns and square footage are the same. The only difference is the price. I just cannot afford $60k+ more in housing costs so I live 33.1 miles from work.
My mortgage is $780/mo for my $169k house 1200 sq ft house. I have tried to move closer to work but a $1500+/mo mortgage just isn't in the cards.
There were already a number of scheduled refinery maintenance shutdowns, and then BP had a major refinery go down for "unscheduled maintenance". Personally, I'm a bit suspicious of any unscheduled refinery maintenance. One of Enron's tactics to manipulate the electricity market was to create artificial shortages by calling up power plants and asking them to shut down temporarily.
Or it could be because of the Texas City Refinery Explosion that killed 15 people (and cost them millions) and the fact that they don't want that shit to happen again.
Cue the posts calling me a "fanboy fanboi"!

I'm not impressed by people who claim that people need to receive their newsletter / e-mail spam.
I'm not impressed by computer users who claim that other users should bow to their desired delivery medium. Let's offer a few examples:
1. They use a mobile device that doesn't have RSS reader support (like me). However, they do have e-mail to the device.
2. They are not technically savvy and haven't a clue what an RSS feed or reader is. I guarantee you that this is the majority of web readers.
3. They are like me and find no use for RSS.

I'm surprised they haven't tried to sue over publicizing the words "Fair" and "Use".

But certainly the RIAA is clearly acting morally wrong as well.
