Monopolies may not be bad if they are regulated. Unregulated monopolies, on the other hand, are bad. They are bad because of bad behavior. They may start off nice, but without competition or regulation, they will turn towards bad behavior.

I don't know what you mean by, "it's called capitalism." There are lots of things called "capitalism" and in many of those cases, we try to encourage competition and discourage the formation of monopolies. Antitrust is a very important part of a market economy.

Legally, it's not who registers the trademark first, but who uses the trademark first. It also matters if they are in the same market. It's possible that they could all get the gmail trademark if they are all in completely different markets. For Google to be in trouble, one of these other companies would have had to actually use the gmail name to provide Internet services or email services before Google. If one of the other companies get gmail registered as a trademark, Google can still use gmail, get sued by the other company, and then as a defense, challenge the validity of the other company's registered trademark. I bet Google's attorney's are not worried.

Actually, it isn't that remarkable. Apple has high R&D costs associated with their hardware and software that PC makers don't have to deal with, e.g. OS X and the G5. I read an article where a Dell spokesperson was bragging that they had the same R&D budget as Apple. They failed to mentioned that Dell is a much larger company.

I find it funny that you blame Apple and their tech support. It sounds like if you had done as they asked and disabled your linux box, you would have gotten you network back up and running. Your problem was having two DHCP servers and you didn't realize that your Airport Base Station had a DHCP server running. Well, IMHO, it's kind of a no brainer to realize that the Base Station has a DHCP server running. Most of these kinds of devices do. Also, the configuration utilities for the Base Station are pretty easy to use and the settings for the DHCP server part are pretty clear.

IMHO your problem with Apple is that you're just more familiar with GNU-LINUX. You can't blame that on Apple.

Actually no, because the DPI at which the OS renders (96 for Windows and 72 for Mac) does not match the DPI of the physical screen (typically over 100). The OS typically does not know or does not account for varying differences in DPI of differing physical displays. This means fonts that are 12 pt usually are different sizes on different computers. However, printer drivers typically know what DPI the physical printers are and therefore the fonts are printed the same on every physical printer (roughly the same).

  7. Re:10 Point Falisy on US Govt Makes Times New Roman 14 Official Font · · Score: 1

You sound a bit confused. 12 point refers to the size of a font when printed. Typical printing ranges from 9 to 12 point. 14 is definitely big. It will look a little awkward. The whole 96 DPI and 72 DPI thing refers to rendering the font on-screen. In this sense, 12 point start to become meaningless because some computers can render fonts at other resolutions besides 96 or 72 DPI. Regardless of what it looks like on screen, 12 should always be the same size on paper.

Actually, Georgia is also a screen font. Verdana (sans serif) and Georgia (serif) were specifically designed to be easy to read on-screen. Georgia does not look good on paper, it comes out too dark. Verdana looks like crap on paper but great on-screen. Tahoma is actually just Verdana Narrow. Both Times New Roman and Arial are designed for print. Unfortunately they are both overused and ugly. Can't we get anything new?

Actually, in law, "real property" refers to land. So, copyrights are _not_ real property. By the same token, your car is not real property either. It may also help to keep in mind that 'property' is an artificial concept in the first place. Property is whatever the courts and the legislature define it as: typically property is a bundle of rights regarding a relationship between a legal person and another regarding the subject of the property right. In the case of copyrights, we're talking about a different bundle of rights than with your car.
