  1. Re:Meaning ... on OpenOffice.org, MS Office 2003 Compared, Evaluated · · Score: 2, Interesting

What I write. I'm not a high school teacher - I will be an elementary school teacher. I've used it to determine the grade level of the test questions and directions I'd written for a fifth grade language arts test. If I write an assignment of test, and I run it through Flesch-Kinkaid, and it comes through a 8.5, I need to simplify my test. Unfortunately, some of my 5th grade kids might be on a 3rd grade reading level - so having my test directions and questions at the 8th grade level would be unfair. Its not used to "dumb down" an assignment - its used to simplify and clarify - and its much more difficult to judge the readibility of a text than it seems. Run an essay or composition through it - see what you get. Cheers.

I love using Open Office! The only thing I miss is that it doesn't offer the Flescher-Kinkaid garde level scale in its word count feature - being a pre-service teacher, I often use it to determine if test items or other text written for kid's assignments is way to easy or dificult. OO is great - and I have never had any of these Power Point/Word compatibility problems, I am always sending and exchanging files with MS Office users.

No - I doubt this would be available to the general public for daily use. It sounds like an advanced version of something that has been used for decades as a diagnostic tool for heart arrhythmias - the Holter Monitor. From what I can find, they are about the size of the CPOD, although the Holter Monitor only records heart rate and rhythm information.

I had to wear a Holter Monitor for two days when I was about 12, and it was the size of a toaster and 3x as heavy - and I had to do things so my heart ould go into arrhythmia (ride my bike up a big hill, run up steps, etc...) I would have much rather worn this thing - it looks much less intrusive on daily life events - but Holter Monitors have been greatly improved, as well.

  4. Re:Hydrogen isn't ready... check out hybrids on Increasing Fuel Mileage With Hydrogen? · · Score: 2, Interesting

The thing is I compared the Prius and the Civic Hybrid environmentally - the Prius is classified as a Super Ultra Low emission vehicle (SULEV), while the Civic Hybrid is simply considered a Ultra Low Emissions vehicle (ULEV).

CA has a program that supports the purchase of SULEVs, ULEVs, and Zero Emission vehicles (all-electric cars are Zero Emission vehicles, and CA has a great car charging infrastructure, form the maps I can see online.

The Prius has somewhat higher mileage (52 city/45 hiway) than the Civic Hybrid (45/51), but the gasoline Civic Sedan gets good mileage as well (38/43), so when it comes to reasons to purchase a hybrid, the issue really is the eleimination or vast reduction of emissions, not necessarily huge mileage improvement.

Diesels DO get great mileage, but have a horrific emissions problems - everyone has been behind a pretty, old Mercedes coupe to just get choked by the fumes as it pulls away from the light.

Final point: If you do decide to buy a hybrid vehicle in 2003, you can get a max. $2,000 tax incentive, but W and his Haliburton cronies have made sure this small incentive has been eliminated for the 2004 tax year.

Excuse me, but a cross country trip usually takes 3 or more weeks, and most of us (here in the U.S.) only get 2 week vacations. Maybe instead of blogging and emailing photos to friends he wants to be able to do some work! My husband and I want to make a cross country trip this summer that might take a month or six weeks. That is a long time to be away from the office/without a paycheck, and we would rather do this trip now, instead of waiting to do it when we're 60 y.o. and retired! He hopes to do some programming on the road (2-3 hrs daily) and upload his work every few days. We will find the sincere replies to this question useful, as well.
