  1. Suit on MPAA Head Valenti on DVD "Hackers" · · Score: 2

Can the US citizens start a class action lawsuit against the MPAA? Buy a DVD, show gthat it doesn't play on Linux, and demand compensation as drivers. Let the MPAA make drivers for all the Linux ports, the BSD ports...

Or else let them agree to end the DeCSS lawsuit and release open source drivers and specs for DVD.

You might have a problem with the fact that we Indians recognise quite a few variants of English (or if I may use it phonetically Inglish). Try Hinglish (Hindi+English) or Tamil English or simbly Keralite English. These are only examples and not to be taken as representative of the whole.

ps, simbly is not a typo. Thats how Keralites pronounce simply :).

That was due to stupid mistakes by our former political leaders, who were deeply influenced by soviet thought.:(.They granted absolute powers to the bureaucracy, which thereby set about acquiring monopolies. The communications media are still government controlled and monopolies. Hence the problem. Standard monopoly. The idea was that the government should finance development initially was good, but the controls were too many. We have had metered connections for quite a while and now they have increased the rates as well. We haven't been fighting for our rights (except for those who are politacally prodded to do so) for the simple reason that survival comes first. Okay, this might be slightly more than justifiable, but it is very close to reality in most of India.

And of course, we have the problem of illeteracy, increased by the desire of politicians to manipulate gullible people. no eternal vigilance, therefore no freedom. but things seem to be improving.

I use Linux on an Intel Processor, but what about those who don't work on Intel machines? Remember that Linux is the most widely ported OS. Binaries will serve the Intel population, but not all Linux users. And again you are forgetting about other OSs like BSD. I will be replacing windoze with Open BSD about July (after graduation). Drivers matter to me. Source for the drivers will help in selling more hardware for these companies.

Which is why the Open Source/ Free Software meme is more important than the OS itself. Remember, the idea is to support the meme, not an OS on one platform.

WinLinux takes the bad points (newbie wise) of Linux and pairs it up with the bad points of Windows. Frankly speaking, its performance sucks. My friend needed a Linux urgently and his RH disk went bad, so I had to install winLinux on his box (the other HD having windoze). Linux crawled on that system, whereas RH was appreciably faster. Installation is easy, but not the use. Even windows outperforms winlinux, which is saying a lot.

But again this was on one standalone machine, so YMMV.

    sorry for the rant.
