I doubt there was much in the way of malicious activity
Let me get this straight, the early investigations of Madoff were done by people who were connected to him. The records of those (obviously flawed) investigations have been destroyed and you don't think it was deliberate? I have a bridge to sell you!
Surely this article should be nodded "massive ignorance"! It's the simplicity of the middle layers that enables the development of the upper and lower levels. It also makes the middle layer much more immune to security issues.
I'm sorry, but what are you talking about? Google agreed to pay $12.5 billion for Motorola Mobility. Google's 2010 net income was $8.5 billion. Unlike you I didn't pull that figure out of my ass.
You should have dug a bit deeper. MM has about $3B in cash, so the net price for MM is about $9B, which isn't so far off the $8.5B you quoted for Google's 2010 net income.
The law states that its intention is to aid in reducing organized crime. In this case, the actions of the police fit the law's definition of organized crime very well!
I have seen companies completely change over from Linux embedded systems to Windows CE or other commercial products because the GPL v3 could be used as a sledgehammer to have all trade secrets handed over.
Linux is GPL3? Perhaps someone shoud tell Linus, because he keeps including a GPL2 license in releases of the kernel.
OK, so now I looked at the complaint. Unless there is something abut the way Scribd presents the document, I doubt that anyone looking at the pictures would realize that the iPad has a metal back (this may be explained in the text, but I don't read German). Even if it is explained, what is that saying about a picture and its value in words?
Given the manipulation of the aspect ratio of the tab photo, I think that it is reasonable to think that the photos of the back of the iPad are lit in such a way to mask the metallic appearance and hence make the back of the tab look similar.
Submitting photoshoped images to the court should cost them their case.
It could and should cost them much more: damages for lost profits and the presumption in any future proceedings that the evidence they give is accurate.
Contrast that with the Motorola engineer. They put up a laundry list of functions, like "it's got to have 172 hours of battery life, must have a range of 3 miles, talk time of 360 minutes, store 1200 contacts, and weigh less than 100 grams."
That may be the way of the Motorola hardware engineer. Unfortunately, the marketing department then get the software engineers to load the battery-and-privacy killing MOTOBLUR onto their nice hardware. They also have locked bootloaders when other Android manufacturers are going the other way.
the TSA can make sure he isn't carrying any weapons he could use to do that with before they hand him his pistol back on the other side!
Or, the pilots could be required to not carry anything through security that passengers cannot carry and are issued a gun at some point after they go through security. They return the gun at the end of their flight. There would be some security infrastructure regarding the inventory of guns, but perhaps it would be less than required to correctly "id" the pilots.
Surely the fiscally responsible approach is to shut down the oldest datacenters first. These will be least efficient and hence the savings will be greatest from shutting these down. The equipment in the newest ones will be the most valuable, but when selling it off, they will only get pennies on the dollar (and things like hard drives will be destroyed, not sold) so the increased revenue from selling the newer equipment will be minimal.
Only reason for selling off the newest equipment: "connected" companies and people will be able to make more money off the surplus equipment.
What are the gifs it tries to download? My proxy apparently blocked a gif file from being downloaded, but the only recent records of denied requests in my squid log file referred to google-analytics.com
I do not know a single person who runs a proxy at home.
I do, and I use it to block both certain sites (advertising and tracking networks) and headers (referrer header is blocked, with a list of exceptions for sites that won't work without it).

Since Airbnb does not allow exchange of personal information until after a contract is agreed, that clause seems to be particularly problematic.
The last time I bought a Laptop from Fry's, they gave me $70 off the price simply because it had been opened and powered on once (but not set up).

Yes, but you and your fellow college students own an insignificant portion of the wealth in the USA.
Or a crafty way to let make the whole country aware of the censorship.
Why? Samsung is ahead of HTC in providing unlocked phones.

At least the steering wheel is on the "right" side!
I don't know what your perspective is here, but driving tests in the UK are significantly harder to pass than in the USA.
The driver was also driving without insurance which would have helped to get the driving ban.

What, and give the judges a way to see that the back sides of the 2 tablets are different? Hardly likely.

I am willing to bet that most /. readers know someone that they wish did not have access to forward and reply all buttons!
But seriously, it's a review by Walt Mossberg and it's not a Mac or an iPhone/Pod/etc. What did anyone expect?

Yes, Apple invented the mobile phone and it's not like Apple took an open-source operating system and used it for the core of their OS, is it?
Ummm. 2600?
