    Surely this article should be nodded "massive ignorance"! It's the simplicity of the middle layers that enables the development of the upper and lower levels. It also makes the middle layer much more immune to security issues.

    I'm sorry, but what are you talking about? Google agreed to pay $12.5 billion for Motorola Mobility. Google's 2010 net income was $8.5 billion. Unlike you I didn't pull that figure out of my ass.

    You should have dug a bit deeper. MM has about $3B in cash, so the net price for MM is about $9B, which isn't so far off the $8.5B you quoted for Google's 2010 net income.

    It actually might be better to just make driving tests significantly harder.

    I don't know what your perspective is here, but driving tests in the UK are significantly harder to pass than in the USA.

    I have seen companies completely change over from Linux embedded systems to Windows CE or other commercial products because the GPL v3 could be used as a sledgehammer to have all trade secrets handed over.

    Linux is GPL3? Perhaps someone shoud tell Linus, because he keeps including a GPL2 license in releases of the kernel.

    OK, so now I looked at the complaint. Unless there is something abut the way Scribd presents the document, I doubt that anyone looking at the pictures would realize that the iPad has a metal back (this may be explained in the text, but I don't read German). Even if it is explained, what is that saying about a picture and its value in words? Given the manipulation of the aspect ratio of the tab photo, I think that it is reasonable to think that the photos of the back of the iPad are lit in such a way to mask the metallic appearance and hence make the back of the tab look similar.

    Submitting photoshoped images to the court should cost them their case.

    It could and should cost them much more: damages for lost profits and the presumption in any future proceedings that the evidence they give is accurate.

    That there were no physical tablets to compare in person? Was the judgement made solely based on 'pictures?..

    What, and give the judges a way to see that the back sides of the 2 tablets are different? Hardly likely.

    Contrast that with the Motorola engineer. They put up a laundry list of functions, like "it's got to have 172 hours of battery life, must have a range of 3 miles, talk time of 360 minutes, store 1200 contacts, and weigh less than 100 grams."

    That may be the way of the Motorola hardware engineer. Unfortunately, the marketing department then get the software engineers to load the battery-and-privacy killing MOTOBLUR onto their nice hardware. They also have locked bootloaders when other Android manufacturers are going the other way.

    the TSA can make sure he isn't carrying any weapons he could use to do that with before they hand him his pistol back on the other side!

    Or, the pilots could be required to not carry anything through security that passengers cannot carry and are issued a gun at some point after they go through security. They return the gun at the end of their flight. There would be some security infrastructure regarding the inventory of guns, but perhaps it would be less than required to correctly "id" the pilots.

    Surely the fiscally responsible approach is to shut down the oldest datacenters first. These will be least efficient and hence the savings will be greatest from shutting these down. The equipment in the newest ones will be the most valuable, but when selling it off, they will only get pennies on the dollar (and things like hard drives will be destroyed, not sold) so the increased revenue from selling the newer equipment will be minimal.

    Only reason for selling off the newest equipment: "connected" companies and people will be able to make more money off the surplus equipment.

    What are the gifs it tries to download? My proxy apparently blocked a gif file from being downloaded, but the only recent records of denied requests in my squid log file referred to google-analytics.com

    I do not know a single person who runs a proxy at home.

    I do, and I use it to block both certain sites (advertising and tracking networks) and headers (referrer header is blocked, with a list of exceptions for sites that won't work without it).

    Either your searching is a FAIL or the article changed after you read it, because it includes this comment:

    Some other examples of government pouring public money down the drain include paying copier paper for £73 when it can be purchased for £8.
