The navy had no clue what to do with the x286 Dos based PC's and just had piles of them sitting lifeless in corners. Most work was done in CPM. PIP'n this and PIP'n that;)
I'm not sure I spelled that right, but anyway, Microsoft did manage to unload a boatload of V1.0 on the Navy at the least. I remember playing with it on the 286's the military had no clue what to do with. Instead of the infamous solitaire game it use to have reversie - a digital version of the othello game.
Even years late I was still happier with DOS 6.1 and Quarterdeck memory/application management. It was the only way to go to host a BBS and still have a little room to work on it while it was up.
Ah the good 'ol days when I was considered a genius simply because I did my own memory upgrades to my Tandy 1000...
"The fear is that if you pursue computer science, you will be stuck in a basement, writing code. That is absolutely not the reality"
Not the case at all if you pursue computer science, you will be stuck in a cube and be expected to be available 24x7 including holidays. That's the reality.
I just went through the majority of responses to this post. As a trans woman I make no claim that I am a 'man' or 'woman' by the classical definitions. I am 'me' just like everyone else. The neurotic clinging to a clarity of the definition to which is which only shows the struggle I am forced to deal with living life within a world that thinks it's all black and white.
It's not. Accept it. Deal with it. Realize there is life outside the binary and celebrate humanity in all its forms.
Unreal.. only 4633 jobs outsourced? Obviously the definition is highly flexible. Take IBM alone. I mean this is a company who's entire bent ( from a labor perspective ) is to facilitate offshore of IT work through they're global services . Even to the point of getting all companies on there MVC framework -- EAD4J, so that it is easier for them to facilitate. Oh and let's not forget they're zLinux project to move Open System's on to they're mainframes so that they can outsouce administration as well more easily. Luckily it's IBM by the time they get it right it'll be old news. But obviously because they are already "International" the movement of the available labor pool from the US to other countries is not "outsourcing" even though fully quilified IT workers in countries that have to pay $5.00 for lunch can go to workers that only have to pay.25. I can't compete with that and it has nothing to do with my talent or skills.
Back in the early 90's I was on the other end of the 'tech support' phone. My favorite call was, "This damn computer doesn't work! I turn it on and it just says c:\ and sits there! What should I do?"
Give your higher up pretty pictures they can understand and all will be well. Trust me.
only if you ran tradewars on it ;)

It's been many years since I heard some common sense on this subject.

But one need not fear being in the basement.

I really love statistics like this. Most are not tested for chromosomal sex at birth so how the hell are such numbers accurately derived?
Quick shoot it down before they land and build a Wallmart.
Hmm being a pre-op TS that's been on hormones for several years....
What would I show to prove I'm a woman??
Take of my top? Take off my pants?
Show them my drivers liscense which is 'F' or my Birth Certificate which is 'M'
Should I show them the letters from my therapists?
How about my hormone level results from my blood tests?
Hmm are they going to create TS characters? Or Can't I play at all?
From my perspective it's just sheer ignorance.. But then I'm waiting for a form on the web that uses a slider bar instead of radio box's for gender.
Didn't realize the human Genome could be used as a hammer...
uh.. they already have a linux client for NWN.
