I know in the games industry people out of college are essentially useless for years. The problem we are seeing is that they know java and math and that's about it. A friend of mine finished his cs degree a few years back, he was programming games while doing this, he was amazed at how little the students knew. They couldn't apply anything they learned in college to real world projects. Most didn't even know c. I'm not speaking for all the cs majors out there but it seems the schools have gone soft, probably because too many complained that the courses were too hard. I know some companies that would rather higher a high school drop out who's hacked together a couple of games than a top cs student.
Neither do I, but the child molesting people are going to gravitate towards these types of sites. So they are in more danger than if they are going to nickelodeon.com. Just last night I was watching supernanny with my wife, granted it's a tv show and the whole situation was probably totally bogus. But the father had never seen the 12 year old daughters site. She had pictures of her in bras being sexually explicit. Sexually explicit photo's everywhere. The father I think thought as you do, give her her privacy. Like I said before it was probably crap because I would think social services would have taken the kid away because the parents were so negligent. Now it's easy for a kid to go on these sites and put up pictures that they think are funny, maybe she was messing around with her friends or something. She puts them up there for the world to see. I'm not sure how secure these sites are but someone can get the information from them to track people down. It's not that hard for anyone on/. to know that this is very possible and a potential problem.
Yes but the internet can be used as a dangerous weapon. I certainly would give her a gun to keep as she is only 9 and I don't want her to learn the hard way that guns are dangerous. Kids are kids and their innocence is working against them in this day and age. I'm not saying we should allow our children to not make mistakes, but there are mistakes that we shouldn't allow them to make. When they are older and more responsible then the parents should trust them more to make right decisions. But a trusting child thinking that the love of her life is a high school freshman like her might want to meet up with them. She might learn the hard way that anonymous nature of the internet has hid the fact that this guy is a 40 year old child molester and she has to endure the pain of trusting him and being violated. That's all I'm saying. Some things are too great a responsibility for an irresponsible child to handle. I've been there to, I'm 29 and seeing society change so much over my lifetime has given me a more protective nature for children than before.
That would be nice if every kid would learn from others mistakes but that's just not the case. I have watched as I told my daughter not to do something and why only to watcher her do it anyway and get hurt. My daughters not dumb, just stubborn. I have a chipped tooth that I won't let the dentists completely fix all the way to remind me of a time I thought my mother didn't know what she was talking about. It's a reminder that I should listen to my elders. And how often do/did you listen to your parents, granted this is a much bigger thing and should probably be avoided but kids make mistakes. That's the whole point of childhood, the only problem is now there's a lot more snakes and fire out there for kids to get hurt by. It's a much more different situation than the not so distant past.
Possibly, but the world is screaming out for parents to control there children since they end up shooting people and when laws are put in place to help them do that in today's high-tech society every one screams children's rights are being trampled. Which is it, do you want parents to be involved or not? A law like this could be abused by some parents but others might be able find problems and deal with them better than if they didn't have this in place. Personally I don't think this law will make it, maybe for good enough reason, but stop telling parents to watch their kids and then tie the parents up and blame them when their kids do something seriously wrong.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA HAHAHAHAHAHA...wait, wait, let me catch my breath...HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
You must really believe in the "inherent good" of mankind. The simple fact is man is by nature competative, ruthless, greedy, etc. Socialism won't work because the most important variable in that system is man. Why should I work hard if I'm not compensated for it. The reason capitalism works much better is that it feeds the competitive and greedy nature of man. There will always be rich and poor, always has been and always will. As for your fear of guns I'm not sure what to make of it.
Protection - gun vs. pepper spray...gun wins, gun vs. martial arts...gun wins. Hunting - meat is too tasty to give up. Defending the Home - I'm sure I'll feel much safer with a burglar downstairs carrying a gun knowing that if he is spooked and kills me or my family my security company might catch him and avenge our deaths.
killing others needlessly - there's plenty of ways to do this, I can go get a bat and with one well placed swing kill a man. Guns definitely make it easier with less work, but don't underestimate man's ability to kill when he wants. Swords and spears are pretty affective and might make a comeback if guns were illegal. But don't fret, the illegal arms dealers will make a killing and so will all who will posses these illegal arms.
In the Star Trek world that you dream of,this might work, but back hear in realty we'll have to keep dealing with the problems as they come.
that's what my understanding was, it started with amd and intel started doing it not long after. So the chips cores are risc and the cisc translation units convert those instructions to risc. I believe IBM, Sun and MIPS still adhere to the risc concepts.
I think it's kind of cool but it ends there. If it's c# only than it's pretty worthless for any hardware intensive games. I mean you can create your tetris clone but not much else. Any game that's going to push the system will need a lower level language. MS released this as a nice thing for people to get started but if your going to get into making hard core games than you will need to get the devkits and spend all the money.
Sounds like your view is coming straight from cnn. You should trying reading all the media outlets to get a better perspective on the reality of the world.
Hahaha, Sony being in league with satan, would have many damned souls to use. Of course this is what most internet posters believe. I think Sony's only real fault is there arrogance. I think Proverbs 16:18 says it best
Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.
I hope this is more of a learning experience than a fall for them. They have a really good system coming out and they've catered more to developers and consumers than before.
Very true, but people complain about the inclusion of BlueRay on the PS3. One can easily claim that it's for games only with the amount of space that it holds. But people always end up complaining that they are getting what they don't want. Consoles are going to have a spec that would be the best for the console. I don't think Sony's only motive for the BlueRay was for movie watching, I think that it makes sense to have a large capacity drive that also plays movies, DVD for example. I wouldn't fault Microsoft for a second if they had used HD-DVD drives for the 360. In fact I think it would have been a good move because developers are going to cut content rather than go over the limit of 1 DVD. This is of course unless the pros out weight the cons for a particular title.
Than charge 140 bucks and don't "force" me to buy something I don't want. The fact is Microsoft didn't deliver on what they said they would, I don't fault them for that. Everyone in the next gen has made promises that they didn't keep. I guess I'm just tired of all the rumors on how Sony eats babies and how the PS3 is powered by the souls of the damned.
Why because Microsoft couldn't deliver the HD-DVD player + 360 for less than the PS3? Maybe they will slit their wrists because of the tech being better in the PS3. Considering that Microsoft isn't going to release another console in a year and a half to better the dated look it will have I don't think Sony should consider Seppuku just yet. But for now Microsoft is definately the king and a force to be reckoned with.
Ah, but rich doesn't always mean greedy. Joseph was a diciple of God. Being a good Christian has nothing to do with wealth. But if you value your riches more than God than you have a problem. The rich man Jesus talked to wasn't willing to give it all up for him. He even though thought he had never sinned. Jesus showed us that you have to value Him above all other things.
But you point out the correct fact that being rich is not a sin but greed is. I couldn't tell you if the Walton's value their money more than God but everyone is assuming they do without really knowing. Oh and Jesus did have rich followers:
Matthew 27:57
"When the even was come, there came a rich man of Arimathaea, named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus' disciple:"
So there's your ONE, I can look for more if you like.
Yeah I almost laughed out loud when I found out that java didn't support unsigned chars, then I cried. It sucked having to work around all that. I've heard that to that having a large memory foot print helps and then not dynamically allocating. But on these consoles dynamic allocation is a must due to the limited resources, there are ways around it like memory pools.
I would think they are brought up because the performance they need seem to show that managed code isn't the answer to all software development. Games need to run fast, most business apps don't.
I've only known one company that used managed code for a game. They used c# to write it. I admit I never looked at the code and don't know what kind of optimizations can be done on managed code but it ran horrible, like 20 frames a second plus the hiccups when garbage collection happened. The simple fact is that interpreted languages have overhead, nobody can deny that. If you are writing a game any cycles taken away from the game is bad. So business apps are fine in my opinion, I use java to write those sometimes, but for applications that can't afford the hit need to be written in something lower level.
It's the only way those games could fit. If you don't compress your textures on the gamecube your screwed, same with the ds. You have split memory on the game cube of 24 and 16 and 48 on ps2 and 64 unified on the xbox. Rule of thumb is the first platform a game comes out on it will look the best. If someone knows how to use a ps2 he can make the game look better than on the xbox. We had programmers writing code for the xbox and ps2 at the same time and it looked way better on the ps2. This was mostly due to the fact that he was a hardware buf and you were limited to the dx api on the xbox. The gamecube, as much of nintendo hardware, as special chips for games. If you don't use these your games look like crap. So if someone is doing a port and doesn't know the hardware well the game sucks. But for those who do know the hardware they can make the games look awesome. RE was arguably the best looking game on this generation of consoles and it was on the gamecube. That really stuck it hard to all the developers that stopped supporting nintendo because the thought the hardware sucked. They were just being lazy and didn't care to go into how developers make good looking games on the platform. Some developers just supported the xbox near the end because it was arguably the easiest to work with. The extra memory just made them feel nice and cozy inside. I'd be curious how the platform develpers on those games games you mentioned started. Did they make it for the xbox first and then just cut poly and texture for the ps2 and gamecube or what? Where the games outsourced to someone to port and did those developers know the platforms well enough? Did those developers take a ride on the source code of the other platforms and then just shoehorn it in for speed of developments sake?
Most of the reason games look good on one platform and crapy on another is because it was a port. The most common way to port a ps2 game to the gamecube is to cut the texture sizes. For the xbox most studios just upped the textures. All platforms have strengths and weaknesses, but most developers don't want to spend the time to do the port right. Mostly because of cost, the port is just extra money so why spend the time making it any better. Just take the few months and finish it to get onto the next game. Usually the first platform the game came out on is the one that looks the best. The xbox has the advantage of more memory so better textures is an easy way to effect the graphics of the game. But the ps2 is a poly pusher so it's give and take wherever you decide to develop.
