The last time I jumped a gun was against a French 74 out of Marseilles. We were in the slaughter house on board HMS Bellipotent, hammering away furiously from Jack Catches It, our twenty-four pounder. Had her treble shotted. But the barrel got hot after twenty minutes, and she bucked so violently that she broke her right breaching tackle on the recoil and flipped over. It was just as well, since the third lieutenant was calling for border and we didn't need to bother securing our guns. It let us stop by the bucket first and get a quick drink.
(1) Once upon a time, a man named Jimbo did create a website where the knowledge of the world might be stored. This website was called the Wikipedia and it was good.
(2) Many were the people who did come and they added vibrant knowledge to the Wikipedia. Most of the knowledge was useful. Some was not. The information was stored haphazardly and there was great inconsistency. But the information was there and it was good.
(3) Those who call themselves journalists did gaze upon the Wikipedia and mocked it. They stated that the Wikipedia could never work, for who would contribute? All could alter it. And information that was incorrect was placed upon it.
(4) And following the journalists and among the journalists were trolls, who did put incorrect information in the Wikipedia.
(5) But behold, for the many people who did come outnumbered the trolls who placed incorrect information on the Wikipedia. The incorrect information was usually found and replaced. And the Wikipedia did flourish and many more people did come to read and add vibrant information to the Wikipedia. And it was good.
(6) Then, some journalists decided that Wikipedia was a creditable source for news and when they came across incorrect information, they did complain and moan and carry on. But the people were learned enough to sift through the vibrant knowledge. As such, the people did not care for credibility, for Wikipedia was good and much information was stored, though haphazardly.
(7) But alas, certain cliques of editors of the Wikipedia did claim the title of Administrator. And certain cliques of Administrators did not trust the people's ability to distinguish between correct and incorrect information, though the people were learned.
(8) And the certain cliques of Administrators did remove the haphazard information. They justified their initial restraints on information vibrancy by claiming copyright violations. And with some gain of power, like all petty fool-tyrants, the Administrators lusted. By taking more power, they destroyed what was the Wikipedia. The Old Wikipedia was dead and the New Wikipedia took its place.
(9) The New Wikipedia was more difficult to edit. Many were the tags that were placed and these tags hung heavy on the articles and upon the people who did edit and create articles. The New Wikipedia took the information from the old Wikipedia, which was good, and attached needless and counterproductive rules, which is bad. And the people did look upon the information and indeed some could not tell a difference.
(10) But those who had added information saw it tagged for content violations and for notability and for references. The people who added information sighed and did say, "This sucks." Then they did stop adding vibrant knowledge and the Wikipedia did not grow as before.
(11) Thus endth the beginning of the story of the Wikipedia, which did start good, but became bad.
You can Godwin me if you like, but don't forget there were a great number of companies that did business with Nazi Germany in the years leading up to WWII. A fascist dictatorship that allows some business to flourish will always find capital from free nations. But by its very nature, the capital will never help remove the dictatorship.
Those guys don't look like most tech workers I know. We are creating an unrealistic expectation of the tech worker, holding him to a fantasy he cannot maintain. Soon, we will expect them to become bulimic, or even worse, Mac users.
I knew one little girl who was raised by two mommies. It was interesting. With her mom around, she was a little beast, yelling at me, an adult, if I was walking into the neighbor's yard to chat with him, "You're not allowed there" or if in the kitchen, "You're not allowed to eat that". Etcetera etcetera.
But when her mommy wasn't around, she was a perfect angel, a little precious sweetheart you'd love for a daughter who would sit on your lap for hours while you told her stories - asked politely to hold your hand when you crossed the street. Her mom was putting her up to telling people off. Very unpleasant behavior, really.
But that aside, what are women teaching our children anyway? To sit still in a classroom, and then an office? Not to make waves. To work your eight hours, buy your meat at the store, go home watch Dancing With The Idols, and sleep to do it again tomorrow?
That's a load of BS. It's time for men to be men. We should be able to hunt. We should be able to confront each other. We should be encouraged to compete and to play and to roughhouse.
In an effort to increase the role of women in society, we have changed the role of men. That's why more girls go to college today than boys. That's why girls do better in school. That's why women under 30 make more than men. Congratulations, society has changed. Women did not become winners and equal to men, but rather men lost what they were and what made life fun.
Well, why wouldn't it include an offense? If someone is putting videos of nutjobs cutting the heads off of people, we damn well ought to be able to take their servers down.
I'm tired of seeing all these law suits against Intel. Why doesn't someone target a true monopoly which has a great negative impact on consumers and the market place - Adobe.
I suspect that the lack of marines on the Bounty had a great deal more to do with it. It was standard practice in those days for all military ships to have marines. Bligh was required to maintain military discipline without military means, an untenable position.
I'm here to criticize. The purpose of Fantasy, and to a lesser extent Science Fiction, is not primarily escapism. Rather, it is to create an understanding of the human condition by using speculation or other plot devices. The first thing that comes to mind are those black white / white black dudes on Star Trek - which you should probably show your class as an example of what science fiction is actually about. I think you also need to define for your class what is speculative fiction, what is hard science fiction, and what is fantasy with spaceships and fantasy with unicorns.
I suspect that it would cost significantly more than 400k. Undergraduate, graduate, likely a Phd. Real world experience. Military training. Then, NASA picks out the individual and begins its NASA training. I suspect the actual number is probably closer to 10 million, if not more.
I think that western society has correctly reassessed the value of life. When you consider that it costs roughly 200k to raise a child in the United States, trading that human's life for certain goals is not necessarily worthwhile now, while it would have been worthwhile 200 or even 100 years ago.
On the other hand, there can be too much of a thing. Exploration, be it arctic, submarine, or interplanetary, is inherently dangerous. Nevertheless, it needs to be done. We need to get off of this single basket and onto other planets or our species is done. That is not generally considered in the life value equation and it needs to be.
Heh. One of the Alien and Sedition Acts is still active today. Alien Enemies Act. And the House tried to pass a new version of the Alien and Sedition Acts, called Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act of 2007. It didn't make it out of the Senate, which is surprising given almost all of the House of Representatives voted for it.
I was wondering if they have fingers to pull.
There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics.
But a Wikipedia administrator with a bunch of tags and article locks isn't too far away from inventing a fourth type of lie.

I'm glad someone got the joke.
I suspect that we will end up calling this a heuristically designed processor. Or something similar....

We're talking about science here, not your night emissions.

Maybe if high school and college students spent as much time working on congressional campaigns as retirees, the laws would be a bit different.
What is it with Comcast, always messing with blocking ports, messing with DNS entries, and making the IT guy's life difficult in general?

Less like pharmacists, more like auto-mechanics.
I don't know. I'm pretty sure Audie Murphy never had a problem getting chicks.
Absolutely. Or, if you're really concerned, just eat irradiated food. I and my intestines wish all my food was irradiated.
Thank you, Obi Wan Kenobi.

Might I suggest you friend me then? That way, almost every day you can have the dirty disgusting feeling I perpetually walk around with!
Only when karma whoring.
