  1. one snafu on Cringley Thinks Apple & Intel Are Merging · · Score: 1

"This announcement has to cost Apple billions in lost sales as customers inevitably decide to wait for Intel boxes."
Actually, this is the only dumb statement Cringely makes. If anything, I suspect, Apple's sales will quadruple as people line-up to snap up Macs before they get Intelanalized.

If every employer were like you, life would be much easier for the few, the brave, the competent. Instead we have dumbasses interviewing dumbasses. In the event the hiring dumbass interviews a "real" architect, he quickly retreats and hires a dumbass. Ignorance breeding bliss has become a byword in the j2ee space.
The good ones can no longer count on their value being recognized because of the amount of crap embedded in the system.

  7. Re:Topcoders vs CA Winners on CA's $1mn Open-Source Bounty Results · · Score: 4, Interesting

Good observation but a closer look explains it. 1) Topcoder payouts are generally micro-payouts. And most of the decent Indian programmers are employed, and hence not "motivated" enough. The CA payout apparently was enough motivation. 2) I haven't looked lately but if I am not mistaken most of the topcoder payouts go to eastern europe. I suspect the decent programmers there have more time on their hands. As these countries catch the outsourcing wave, suspect their numbers on tc will drop accordingly. Yeah, i minored in freudian socialogy.

  10. What is in it for Google (and the future)? on Google Launches Desktop Search Tool · · Score: 1

Okay, super tool. But what does mining our hard-drives provide Google? * Even more targetted advertising possibilities? Integrate with mozilla/IE and they "provide" us with advertising du jour (final delivery via gmail and internet-google of course.) * Very tantalizing is the possibility that independent hackers will turn desktop-search into a incredible P2P search/find/share tool. I could write such a tool from scratch but getting millions to adopt it would be a major hassle. If Google has already penetrated the desktops, creating a hacked-p2p-shell around their search-tool would be a KILLER APP. THe possibilities are enormous. Even Google might conceivably do this -- Google should be aware that I've patented this idea and retained D. Boies and J. Cochran.

  11. Indians just aren't suited for it on Tech Support Levels Dropping · · Score: 1

Wish I'd seen this article earlier to make some important observations. Please mod this up if you think appropriate. As an Indian -- I can categorically assert that Indians are simply not cut out for call-center and tech-support type jobs. This is totally politically incorrect, some idiots might even ascribe this as a racist troll post -- but the education system and religious customs in India permit and encourage ABSTRACT thought and behavior. Routine, repetitive tasks go TOTALLY against the grain of the Indian personality (in general.) An Indian taking tech-support calls will simply get bored out of his mind and won't do the freaking job properly (I mean who could under the circumstances.) I suggest that only programming, and design jobs that require a higher level of abstract thought be off-shored. Send the mundane jobs elsewhere. Granted this won't be popular in India where sheer number of jobs are needed; so I'm only speaking from the corporate standpoint. Peace out.
