Tax-break accounts (401Ks/IRAs) cause more investing than a free market (unbiased taxing) would otherwise have. 401Ks contribute to passive trading. All of these are government manipulations on the market. Just because you can't identify a regulation on a specific trade doesn't mean that it isn't directly or indirectly regulated already.
They why do we have quotas on how many immigrants we take in? We decided to put quotas in place to "protected American jobs" in the early 1900s. Now the story has changed and jobs are just outsourced. But rest assured, people will complain that a legal immigrant is taking their job.
Didn't Obama just say that he won't enforce illegal immigration laws on young people? Picking and choosing. Andrew Jackson was actually acting on a bill in the books of Congress. He didn't just say "I'm going to do this against everyone's wishes".

Actually, I see the protectionist culture more in the midwest, than the northeast. A more accurate statement would be classified by urban, suburb, or town/village family living. The culture is VERY prevalent in suburb living. Not so much in the inner city or rural lifestyles.
I have lived in NYC, Columbus OH suburbs, rural PA, and Northern VA. The most protectionist was in OH and Northern VA. The other two would drive those people nuts.
