  1. Boto for Python is a good option on Ask Slashdot: Scientific Computing Workflow For the Cloud? · · Score: 2

Since my scientific workflow always includes Python it is natural for me to use boto.

  2. I switched to CentOS and never looked back on The Burning Bridges of Ubuntu · · Score: 5, Informative

The stability of CentOS is great. I don't get all the fancy features but I don't want those anyway as they just get in the way. At work when we need something supported we just use RedHat and pay for the support. Moving development between CentOS and RedHat is totally transparent to me.

  3. MacMini and Re:EyeTV on Best PC DVR Software, For Any Platform? · · Score: 1, Informative

I have a Mac Mini setup with FrontRow, iTunes, and EyeTV hooked to a 37" flat panel. It all works really well with the $19.99 Apple Remote Control and Sofa Control software. This setup passes the Wife test and even my 4 year old can use it. Playing DVD's is super easy with FrontRow. The computer looks attractive because of it's small size and sleek design. The Mac Mini setup will save you time with setup and family support issues.

  4. Re:Heartfelt! on CrossOver Office 5 and Wine 0.9 Released · · Score: 2, Interesting

Unfortunately I am not a coder for Codeweavers or the WINE project (if you notice I didn't spell their website correctly). I am a big fan of codeweavers because I have to use Office at work it is actually mandated. By running CXOffice I am following the rules but I can still run Linux it really pisses off the network admins :-). This is actually a heart felt comment.

  5. Re:RPM? on CrossOver Office 5 and Wine 0.9 Released · · Score: 3, Interesting

In the past you have been able to tar the cxoffice and
".cxoffice" directory and move the entire installation to another machine. I am not sure what it means to make an RPM package out of a bottle but if I was installing cxoffice on several different machines I would tarball the cxoffice directories and copy to the other machines. Done.

  6. Congrads to Codeweavers and the WineHG Team! on CrossOver Office 5 and Wine 0.9 Released · · Score: 2, Interesting

This release is an important milestone for both teams and goes one step forward in allowing Linux (MacOS users soon) to run any Windows program perfectly.

  7. Get MS Part time/find a Co-Op to Pay school on Breaking Away from Programming? · · Score: 2, Interesting

I work for the government in a military research lab doing cool research. Currently I make good money and the government pays for my school. My thesis is government related so I can do thesis work on the clock and I have an entire army of PhD's to help me out. So I recommend applying to Grad school (close to a government lab) then looking for a job/co-op position that will help pay for school. For the first two quarters of my MS degree I was making a living from a Teaching Assitantship and it sucked. The downside to this approach is it takes forever to graduate and you can't pick your own research topic. I can only take a single class at a time because I am required to do some real work at work. The thing to remember is most of the leadership at government labs are looking to retire so they are looking for people to fill in the open positions and a Co-Op is a cheap way to test somebody. A Co-Op at a gov lab will get you thru school and might even get you a full time position in the end plus some good money. Good luck!

  8. For MS Office users switch to Crossover on Are Widespread 'Microsoft-alike' Replacements Feasible? · · Score: 1

I have been using Crossover Office from http://codeweavers.com/ for all MS-Office work. My personal word processing is done in Latex but if a stupid person gives me an MS Document I am ready with Crossover. When ever I make a presentation I do use Powerpoint. Easy to install and well worth the money.

  9. Re:VM Software on Linux Distros for a Windows Software Developer? · · Score: 1

For me Crossover Office works really well. Crossover is $40 and is not a VM so it does not take huge CPU and memory to run. The only limitation is the Windows apps you want to run must be supported. The list of supported apps is growing by the day. Check out http://www.codeweavers.com for the details.

  11. Re:Automate with Bash Scripts on Linux From Scratch 5.0 Book Released · · Score: 1

I actually used somebody else's scripts a long time ago and can't remember the original authors name otherwise I would be happy to post them. Lots of people other than me have their own scripts for doing the same thing, in fact there is a project called ALFS (Automated Linux From Scratch).

  12. Automate with Bash Scripts on Linux From Scratch 5.0 Book Released · · Score: 2, Interesting

I created several bash scripts that automate the process for me. It works pretty good and was easy to do. Every time a new edition is released I just update my scripts and then reinstall. The think I like best about LFS is the system in the end is configured to your liking. It takes time but gets you a very customized system.

I don't have a Zaurus, but I had a iPAQ and even with the full size keyboard it was very difficult to develop programs on. I think you would be better off with a sub notebook of some sort, because of keyboard difficulty.

  14. Worst Book out of the Series on War of Honor · · Score: 1

Out of the entire series this book is the worst! Come on you have to read 3/4 of the book just to get
to the first space battle and it is tiny. The last
1/4 of the book is good, but I hate all the
politics. I read Weber for the space battles not
    the politics!
