no we AREN'T talking about the price you idiot, we are talking about restrictive DRM technology. RTFA and it says STARTING FROM $3. so they don't actually give you a price do they, just a vague hint.
except you forget the rest of the story, where they have laws passed where you can get 25 years in jail for copying a dvd yet running down someone while drunk behind the wheel of a car will get you at most 10. where they attempt to control the use of your purchase far beyond the point where you paid for it. where they purposely impose strictions on supposedly free markets in order to price fix. if movie studio's manage to implement a fool proof drm what do you think that will do to the price of a dvd movie? it certainly won't make it go down i can tell you that.
the bottom line, is these people are evil son's of bitches with no moral scruples and the attitude that if it's legal they can do it, if it's not legal they will try MAKE it legal.
i have seen software spec's so detailed they detail themselfs out of all relevance. the furthur into detail they go the more work they are to change when it comes time to making the thing work.
i have found by far the best method is to get the REQUIRMENTS right first, then draw a rough mud map of how the thing must work, then split up the sections and work them out in detail as you go.
100 page novels pretending to be specs are totally useless.
who exactly is "slashdot" i might ask. you sound like a raving lunatic talking about "they" and "them". there is not one consensus on slashdot, it's a bunch of opinions.
and so what if the article is biased? every single one is. thinking otherwise is just bullshit.
the thing is, people will work for whoever they want. fair enough they can't steal idea's and tech from their former employers. but companys do NOT have the right to devalue you through overly strict non compets in order to prevent you improving your position in life. that goes against every ideal of any capitalist nation. increasingly i see corperations attempting to turn employment into the new serfdom. they demand total loyalty from employees while reserving the right to lay off 1000's just to pump up profits a few %.
bottom line, is if i have experience in something and i'm good at it, i'll work for ever i want and anyone who has anything to say about it can just fuck off.
music labels today are all about pumping out one hit wonders and pushing retards like jessica simpson. doesn't it occur to anyone that the reason people like her need to be on tv, is that without seeing her no one would listen to her music.riaa pay to play certain tracks over and over on popular stations, in order to advertise and boost sales. and for that matter noticed how old songs are getting covered more and more often? it's a sign of a music industry in crisis
"Thanks to stupid programmers there's absolutely no way anyone can protect themselves from identity thieves. "
obviously this gem comes from all your experenice writing secure systems.
it's entirely possible to protect your personal information, it's your own fault you gave it away so easily so stop doing the typical meat headed american thing and blaming everyone else.
oh and identity theift happens most often without the use of anything digital, scammers mostly go through people garbage and find personal details. so you should stfu and get your facts right.
people, shred ALL your documents your throw out. i can't stress this enough. if anyone calls you saying they are from the bank or anything, hang up and call the bank back to verify this. if you recieve mail asking to send personal details, look up the companys phone number in the phone book and call them to verify this.
except the windows OS is vastly more complex then the tempature of fucking coffee, and it doesn't matter who you are there will be bugs in software. if you allowed companys to be sued everytime their software had a bug in it it'd end up the same way the medical industry is now - no one will want to work in software because a horde of lawyers will attempt to sue you into oblivion. as i said before, more litigation is not what the world needs. being sued constantly should not be viewed as a cost of business, i find that idea disgusting. people should not be allowed to treat the courts as some kind of lucky dip trying to get rich.
what he is suggesting is that we some how can write flawless programs that never have any holes or break. just another idiot jorno with no fucking idea, nothing to see here move along.
is it just me or does eolas remind you of ebola? a highly infectous virus that rips the guts out of all bodies it infects, and produces nothing useful just kills everything.
yes because i should be able to toss my devices around like they are a piece of crap and not expect them to get damaged. i've seen how people treat phones so ipods wouldn't get much different treatment.
BUT.. i'm yet to be convinced they are at a stage they can take on an exe.
I wouldn't want to start a major application to find some future release of IE breaks it horribly. i use wxpython for the moment it's the closest thing i've come across so far to being truely platform independant with all the bells and whistles.
i'd be majorly chuffed if i could so the same things via a web browser however.
i dont know the last time you actually used X11, but i use it on a daily bases via a REMOTE screen and i have no problems with stablity or performance.
i will grant you one thing, that windows terminal services kicks the arse out of x11 on speed. this is only because the old xfree group sucked dick and refused to make changes. there are companys that have made forks of x and they can run a remote x window over a modem connection, so it's not an inherent problem with x11.
all i can say is LOL@windows patching. patch and restart all your systems please.
i use freebsd mostly these days and i just do cvsup -g -l2 ~/portsup-file && portupgrade -aR. i'm yet to run into any actual problems, and portupgrade -aR is considered risky (i only do it on systems that run basic stuff. anything running stuff like gnome i use portaudit and manually upgrade after checking UPDATE)
considering ports is maintainted by people donating their time vs MS which is a multi billion $ company with huge resources, i find their efforts pathetic.
what a load of crap.in all my years admining linux systems i have never seen ANYTHING even remotely close to a windows blue screen style crash. a user land process cannot blow away the system like that under linux. the only way this would happen is 1. bad hardware 2. idiots playing with kernel settings they shouldn't be.
either way none of this reflects on linux's stablity at all, just on the skill of the admin running it.
want another hint this is a case of a total retard running the system? "2 weeks to install sap on redhat"
even the most stable system will go bad with an idiot in charge.
in many cases the amount the film takes at the box office means jackshit.
your forgetting all the toys, dvds and other franshised material they sell, which in many cases outstrips the boxoffice takings. in fact these days many films sounds tracks make more money then the film does.
you just tapped one of the major problems with open source on the head.
every bastard just sits back waiting to use someone elses hardwork for nothing.
obviously posting as a AC to protect your image and prevent people finding out your a downie.
the phd crowd tend to be worse then useless at coming up with anything that actually has to DO something. thats WHY engineers are so important, they actually produce something meaningful.
the key problem here, is that people are lazy and stupid.
the best way to secure something without taxing the average persons feeble brain is to use a password and an ssh key on a swipe card or a usb drive.
that way even if someone gets one they are very very unlikely to get the other. it also means you can change the ssh key on them without them having to remmeber anything. hell in a system i'm impementing everyone get a new key when they swipe in for the day and it expires after 24 hours.
nonsense. how big do you think website are ffs? 1 meg at most for a front page? this demand is driven mostly for downloading music and movies (and yet riaa can't take the fucking hint how dense can they be) and the fact that cable and dsl aren't viable everywhere.

huh, what? SWF an open format? WTF since when?
