    that's just a nonense argument though. you purchased OSX fair and square and installed it on hardware that run's it - just because you didn't purchase the hardware from apple why should it even matter? you could easily argue that by NOT including the hardware apple isn't making it's intentions clear, and the only possible recourse apple should have is to deny tech support.

    of course this won't stop these sue happy bastards, nor will it stop the legion of apple fanboys attempting to apologise for them.

    you mean linux wasted untold hours of your time. seriously all distro's need a gaint flashing disclaimer listing all the hardware they won't work with. maybe i'm just bitter but i gave up trying to make linux work on consumer hardware about 2 years go....

    totally wrong. typically in mergers middle management gets cleaned out (because they are useless yet don't have enough clout in the company to hold onto their jobs) and board memembers take a golden parachute. your average employee if they are smart will reframe it as an opertunity and try jump into a promotion during the restructure.

    i'm guess that's not you though....

    this is very true. there is no point blowing your load over 1080p if you can't broadcast it well enough that you don't get a decent signal. frankly i don't see the obession with 1080p when it's much easier to put out a 720p/1080i signal which will look just as good.

    oh and i have a 70 inch 1080p TV so i know what it looks like on a large screen. 1080p is nice, but it's not essential.

    aussie banks are actually not bad in this department. they are just as big assholes as the american banks, but they do cover your losses if you show you didn't get had through your own stupidity. i actually know someone that had their CC details stolen online and the bank covered the loss. he wasn't a careless or stupid person either - just unlucky.

    my bank now uses one time tokens for transfers to new accounts, so if my login details were ever stolen they would need to already be in my list of trusted accounts to steal the money. since i never reveal bank details online this is never going to happen (always use CC).

    the only way i could see anyone cracking this kind of system would be to install a keylogger or something with the first transaction, once they have logged in and done a transfer to you once log in and clean them out with a 2nd transfer. that's pretty lengthy process which would end up with you being caught in no time.

    windows servers are very reliable, netcraft confirms it http://uptime.netcraft.com/up/today/top.avg.html. in fact linux isn't even in the top 50. put THAT in your pipe and smoke it

    windows is also by far the easiest platform to develop for. .net is a brillant product, sql server is also brillant to use and compared to oracle it's cheap as chips. it also comes with tools like reporting services which OSS simply has no answer to.

    i've developed under BSD and windows for years, and windows has by far had better tools for the last 3 years. i just get the feeling you don't know what your talking about....

    because that's all this is. no views, triggers, stored procedures or ACL's??? this REEKS of a system that will have programmers doing all the work a database was made for in their code.

    and what the hell is the obsession with a "slimmed down" database for web apps? it's not like the client is downloading the database backend. make the database backend as feature full as you can to make your apps, you know, BETTER.

    my prediction is dribble will be used by a few nob headed php programmers, who will shortly post on /. how the dribble database is 10x faster than regular mysql. they will also forget to mention that it fails at anymore more complex than select *

    and i'm sorry but you are going to have to do a LOT better than someone wielding knives and hammers as an example of taser misuse. it's all very well to try sit back in your armchair and say "oh but she's a granny in a wheel chair, she can't hurt anyone!", but what if she suddenly threw the knife or the hammer at the cops, what if she suddenly decided she didn't want to go to jail and stabbed herself. old people wheel chair bound or not, can be just as batshit crazy as anyone else. Sitting around and waiting for her doesn't defuse the situation and certainly doesn't prevent her causing harm to herself.

    amnesty international is a fucking joke and i don't give anything they put out any credibility anymore. they are a purely politically driven organization, nothing more. i'd be willing to bet most of the supposed taser deaths are actually from medical complications resulting from the taser use, complications the cops couldn't have known about at the time.

    of course there are alternatives to consider:

    1. don't fucking break the law to begin with

    2. shoot them clint eastwood style

    3. bludgeon them with batons

    all police get to experience the taser and pepper spray before they are issued the gear, so they know it hurts like a motherfucker. i can't find the specifics of the case you are talking about, but i'm assuming since you didn't state she died, that she didn't. until you post a link to a news article i'm going to point out even old grannies can wield a knife.

    i will say one thing though. private security shouldn't be issued tasers. all the cases i can find where it was really misused has been private security guards. these guys don't have any business with them since they are only meant to be eye and ears.

    taser misuse is drastically overstated. i'll grant there is probably isolated cases of cops abusing their powers, but they would do that taser or not. they are just bad cops, taking the taser away changes nothing.

    what we gain by using the taser is a way for police to subdue a suspect with very little danger of harm to them or anyone else. no other weapon does this as well as the taser.

    wrong. it's a by product of ZINC production. there is also only about 6000 ton of economically viable indium left. sure the rest could become viable with INCREASED COSTS to solar and lcd panels.... but again that shoots down the idea of cheaper PV panels.

    lastly, the tip that solar panels where going to go through the roof came from a huge dealer in solar panels in my area. i'm guessing he knows what he's talking about.

    another problem with PV is they have only just started making panels that are energy positive. in other words it takes more energy to create the cells than they will ever produce. they aren't free energy forever either, they only last 10 years at best, and long before that their output drops significantly.

    don't get me wrong PV is cool for portable recharging and low voltage stuff, it's just not a replacement for mains power.

    what about when world supplies of indium run low? line your roof with cadmium? you are more likely to see prices rise not drop with more people buying up solar panels.

    PV just isn't cut out for providing base load, the power goes out at night unless you use battery storage, which would create more of an environmental disaster and just isn't feasible.

    part of the issue people are missing is that currently these kind of grid feeding systems merely supplementing our power grid which is really being backed by coal fired stations. try taking out the coal power stations and see what happens.

    so i saved a few hundred dollars a year but had to spend 38K ????? what the hell is the point. PV can't ever replace base load power sources.

    note i'm not entirely against solar, there has been some interesting work done with molten salt which is cheap tech. the problem is nothing using that process can generate enough power. i think our future lies in something like solar thermal salt and nuke stations simmering away providing the base load, turning them up if weather prevents the solar thermal handling the peaks.

    wait so what are you proposing? that if there is the slightest doubt some scum bag raped a little girl we should let him go? your all missing the REASONABLE part in "reasonable doubt". it's isn't beyond all doubt or any doubt, it's reasonable. i'm betting if you have DNA matches, witnesses at the scene and some other evidence linking your suspect to the crime, he's your man.
