OpenForum was founded shortly before the decision. they signed a paper with Eicta (strong propatent) that was used by Eicta in order to lobby the parliament.
I am not intrested whether OpenForum was a representative or not, but the propatent lobby tried to convince the parliament that now "Open Source" walks along with the McCarthy proposal. Which of course is nonsense.
The amendments proposed by McCarthy were teethless and don't even reach their own objectives. FFII filed a good counter-proposal.
Wrong. There is little pressure from the US. It's more up to the lawyer pressure groups. There are not even business interests. The DIHT (german Chamber of Commerce), German Monopolkomission (monopoly commission) were against it while the ministry of justice was slightly in favour.

Call them by phone. Assistents are more important than the MEPs. Public pressure has to increase. Just phone them. Or request an audience. Encourage others to do the same. Be polite. State your position. Write the results of your talks to patents@aful.org or any person in the lobby process. Tell them that swpats affect you, tell them that you don't want swpats, tell them that you don't benefit from swpat, that no economic study justified a further extension of the patent system, that McCarthy lied to the public when she said that she proposed a restrictive amendment.

Software-Patents as a unresolved problem
A problem of open source are so-called software patents. A prominent example are the rights of the file format jpeg. Once the developing company licensed royality free, in order to wide spread the format. The buyer of this company now requests fees from commercial users. This is - so to speak - a time bomb. Big Linux distributors own software patents as well, but they don't intend to use them right up to now. The responsibility with regard to licensing is overshifted to the user und he would be obliged to read the license texts for all used packages. Despite the GPL there are a lot of other license forms with different rights and dutys of the license holder.

and of course OpenForum Europe:-) haha.
Well, the real problem is not that the EU wants this tax. the problem is that the US abolished it. They would have to collect it like any other business collects taxes. The unusal thing is the internet tax policy of the US.
I think Free Sofware is not opposed to the original idea of shareware. ( closed source crippleware) I just remind you of the story of PCFile or the ASP guidelines. Add "open source" to that and the next step of the revolution will be taken. Today it is difficult to spent money over the internet. Penpal sucks. But probably an international donation system has to evolve for application developers that write free software (GPLed)
Webeditor Quanta is an example of GPL shareware.
Troll!
R is professional software. I does not compare with SPSS which is the easy use solution.
As a command line language R is easy scriptable, there are many extensions.
Who watches the watchmen?
State authority is the natural enemy of citizenship. That is why in many countries civil liberties are defined as restrictions to govermental excercise. I don't trust technology policy by govermental bodies.
There is a strong Anti-Patent movement in Europe. The German based organsation FFII is a very important player in the defence against lawyer interest groups. The EU wanted to introduce software patents back in 1999, the battle is still not over. Eurolinux alliance started an petition against Software patents with more than 140 000 signatures. Of course everybody shall try to talk to EU parliamentarians, esp. Arlene McCarthy(UK labour), Würmling (EVP) ecc. They have Email.
European parliament: http://www.europarl.eu.int/
You should also protest against patent policy of EPO at EU Ombudsman
GPL Admin tools like TOra 8very good, targeted at Oracle) and some KDE Tools like Kexi will prove that MySQL ist a professional database. However, more important is easy administration.
Imagine MYSQL without PHP!
I think Micael Robertson is not that smart. However this project is 'old European'.
hmm. When will anybody starte the Apple desktop environment project.
You don't know the work of FFII and all the other initiatives in Europe do you? http://swpat.ffii.org http://www.noepatents.org

That's the use of FFII! http://www.ffii.org a powerful lobby group against IT regulation and for a free informational infrastructure.

Well, US Federal Trade Commissioner Mozelle W. Thompsson came to a FFII lobby event in Brussels. May 7/8 03

I hope the alternative themes will get more stable. Some just don't work.
KDe is very popular in Europe. fix your Gnome file dialog and I will consider gnome too.

The unix philosophy is: use different command line tools and scripts. R may be one those. There will be no tool that solves the whole problem.
Troll! R is professional software. I does not compare with SPSS which is the easy use solution. As a command line language R is easy scriptable, there are many extensions.
Did you consider R, a Splus clone? For Scientific Statistics a very flexible solution. http://www.r-project.org

2 days ago I posted it on slashdot. However it was rejected... humm Source was released on April 1st!
So why don't you start your own project.
