As a wise man once said - "Documentation is like sex, when its good, it's very very good, and when it's bad, its better than nothing". Oh, and The Open Directory Project can be helpful when looking for links for help.

Lovely, I have a dual 2.4GHz Xeon sat here, I think I might try 4.8 on it. Does it have the 30% performance increase that the Linux patch made? The faster (and newer) P4s also have hyperthreading so its not totally out of everyones price range.

The Palladium issue is what I see bringing most desktop users to Linux from Windows, but even as a Linux desktop user myself, I can say that Linux isnt ready for every users desktop. The only way it will be is to have the whole of applications like MS Office running on Linux as well as gaming much improved.

I think that if MacOS was released for x86 far more users would decide that MacOS is what they want for their desktop over Linux.

How about a program that gets beer goggles and wakes up the next morning thinking "Why?", "What?" and "WHO?!" - it would be the nearest that a program has ever got to being human.

I definitely looking forward to the 4.8 release of FreeBSD because of this: "Lots of last minute work is going into to it to deliver features like XFree86 4.3.0, Intel HyperThreading(tm) support, and of course many more bug fixes". I have a Xeon game server going in to Telehouse in London that will be running FreeBSD and so the introduction of hyperthreading into the latest release will be a welcome addition

The reasons why I choose Linux over Windows are because of the choices it gives me. In Linux I can choose a variety of applications and test to see what the best is, without having to invest in buying the software (or being illegal). Linux provides you with a choice of most things and allows me to tweak and get deeper into the workings of my Operating System than Windows does.
Other people don't like Linux however, as with the extra tweaking comes extra time that is needed to be put into getting the OS running exactly as you want it.

I'd agree with that too. If there were a set of policies then it would be much easier, I think at the moment its just an unwritten law you are expected to know.

I agree here, if you want to play games, play games but don't let them take over your life, I can't imagine anything worse than having a game invade my life! One thing that should be established, is the clear seperation between "Real Life" and the domains of escapism that is the Internet and online gaming. If this does not happen then events such as killing related to the violence seen in Online games etc will increase because the kids and other players wont make a clear distinction between real life and their game. Not clearly recognising that if someone dies then they aren't going to respawn

To be honest, I think that Linus deals with the pressures of his position extremely well. One of the reasons that I don't think he appears co-operative on the LKML is because some of the queries that are directed at him should have been directed at his star of lietuenants. When a person has that many patches etc sent at him, would you not appear a little cranky?

Too true, unfortunately. The way things are going RMS wont even get to be a footnote. I also disagree with the endless trolling of RMS. Granted, he's not as co-operative as someone like Linus is but, he's someone who the *nix community owe quite a lot to. I think that we should forget the differences and respect the influence the man has had on geek culture. I wonder whether he will have grown past the posting of flame comments on the LKML yet?
