Well, I have to say that what you are saying now mostly coincides with what I am thinking. I have no problem if the artist wants his music distributed freely, and naturally that would be a good thing for everybody(except the record companies, and possibly the artist). Of course I would agree that most artists would want the most widespread use of their music, but it is most likely that they would also want something in reward for this. All I am saying is that it is the artists choice. If (s)he says its ok to pass it on to your friends, then thats great, but if not then you shouldn't do it.
The difference in our opinion seems to be that you think no matter what the artist wants you should be able to give it to your friends(or anyone else). I fail to see the logic in that opinion. These people need to make a living somehow, and giving away music usually is not gonna do it.
For what its worth, I also tend not to listen to mtv/top40 music for the same reason you do;).
leads me to believe that your objection to the..promiscuity of online music is based on a moral belief that because it is illegal, it is wrong.
Well, I don't know how you jumped to that conclusion, but I bet you can dunk from the 3-point line.
This music is not yours. If whoever creates the music wants you to be able to download it, they will put it on a website or soemthing. If they want to sell it as CD's that is what they will do. The bottom line is that the music is theirs. They should be able to decide how it is distributed, not you. I really do not care whether something is illegal or not. It's just that distributing music without the consent of the creator just seems wrong to me. Can you honestly tell me that it doesn't seem wrong to you?
Let's heckle each other about the definition of stealing. What I am trying to say is this: If someone makes/creates something physical or not physical, then they should have the right to do whatever they want with it. If they don't want you to use it, then that is their choice. If they want to charge you for it, that is their choice. If they want to have marketing campaigns which in turn inflate the price of their good, that is their choice. If you want to make a competing product and give it away, that is your choice, but it is not you choice to determine how someone elses products should be distributed.
My morals are based on my own thoughts. I don't know how you came to a conclusion by hearing one of my opinions, but I guess your pretty quick. Don't even pretend that you are _stealing_ this music for an act of civil disobedience. You are stealing this because you don't want to pay for it. It is a noble thing to break a law because you don't agree with it, but this is just simply not the case for the extremely vast majority of the people who steal this music.
thats like AT&T saying everyone who uses Sprint or MCI is a pirate because when the customers switched from AT&T to MCI AT&T lost money
I would say its more like AT&T saying you should not be allowed to use boxes. This music is not in the public domain you know. It would be nice if we could download all this music for free, but be realistic.
if I can find a song for free and download it and burn it on to my own CD, why should I even bother to go to a overpriced store ?
CD's may be overpriced, but you should bother to go to the store because you are stealing the CD if you download it.
I don't know where people get the idea that if something costs more than they want to pay, its OK to steal it. Downloading copyrighted CD's is generally stealing. Do not say something its OK to do something because it is convenient for you. That is the easy way out, and we all know that the easy way out is not usually the best way.
there could have been a God who created the universe with a big bang, billions of years ago.
There could have been a god who created the universe "after" you posted that comment. People seem to think that the universe started at the big bang because that is where science points right now, but a god could have made the universe in a state(such as the current state of the universe) that leads science to point to a big bang type deal. I think Steven Hawking points this out in _A Brief History of Time_.
This was a little off topic, but for the record I am agnostic(leaning towards atheism), and have thought about it considerably. I don't know there is not a god(aka agnosticism). The rest of my family(aside from one brother) is Catholic.
Of course RDRAM is going to be expensive. It is pretty new on the market, and they've got to pay off their research and development costs. After that RDRAM prices will drop. Also RDRAM is a lot faster than SDRAM so you are gonna pay more for the performance increase. That is just the way it goes.
I very well may be mistaken with this, but I thought 24 and 32 bit color had the same amount of colors. The only difference is that 32 bit is faster(but takes more memory) because it is aligned differently. Hmmm, I do not recall where I heard that, so take it with a grain of salt.
Well, I would have to argue that an open source product is far more controllable than a propriety product, simply because you have control over an open source product. They would have no control over a propriety product like Windows, but they can pretty much do whatever they want with Linux. I would also like to note that Communism is not about control of the people by the government. Communism is actually, IMHO, a more democratic economic system than capitalism.
These contests don't break the spirit of open source in my opinion. All they really do is create publicity, and give people more of a reason to develop for YOUR project. As to whether or not an open source project should need something like this to get developers, I do not pretend to know. However, I do know that doing something like this does get developers. Hey, it might even spark a few of those propriety fellows to contribute.
On a similar note of how bad schools are with respect to things like this. Yesterday at my school someone found a bullet. Next they made an announcement that everyone was being locked into their classroom. Then they forced everyone to empty their pockets/backpack/purse/et cetera. They found a number of cell phones, pagers, and various others not allowed in school, but no gun. This seemed a little illegal to me(isn't there something about undue search and seizures in the bill of rights?), but I guess I am not a lawyer. I would have gladly emptied my belongings, because I suppose there was an extremely minor threat. But it irks me that there was no option. Also, they would not even tell us what was going on until after everyone had been searched, and they unlocked the classroom doors.
Why is that a sad thing? I would prefer microsoft dominate the console market than some other company, based on the fact that Bill claims to intend to give the vast majority of his fortune to charity during the course of his lifetime. The console market is nothing like the PC market. Every console maker has complete control over their console, and there are not really any standards to break. Trying to force standards that favor microsoft has been, in my opinion, the worst thing microsoft has done to date. They will not be able to do this with consoles, therefore I would rather see the profit from the console market go to charity rather than go into some already extremely rich mans pocket.
why do you refuse to purchase anything microsoft makes? im guessing its because you think their products are not up to par with your standards. if that is the answer, then why do you use their OS? why would you avoid pirating software except when it comes to microsoft? people need to stop being anti-microsoft simply "because". open source software is not about stopping microsoft its about making open source software. if all those propriety companies find it hard to compete with open source projects, then so be it, but the goal of open source projects should not be to put those companies out of business...oh well i kinda went off on a tangent

I think that the DOJ just needs to back up a little bit. I am looking at a copy of the Constitution, and I don't see anything about telling children what is right and wrong in Article III(the Judicial Branch Part). What I do see, in terms of responsibilities for the judicial branch, is the ability to interpret the law and the constitution, and apply it to cases which are presented. The only place they don't decide is impeachments really. They can also tell congress or the president to stop doing something because it is unconstitutional. I find what the DOJ is currently doing to be pretty unconstitutional. I dont know where they found the power to do this, but I guess they did(or maybe the just don't care about the Constitution anymore). Anyway, maybe I'm crazy(and thats possible), but almost everything the US Gov't does anymore makes me mad.
I can tell you they did not invest in Mandrake because Mandrake is basically Red Hat. Isnt TurboLinux popular in Japan though? Well, I am not sure, but if it is then I could see that as a pretty good reason.
Is there any chance quake3 will be released under an open source liscense? If I recall correctly, Doom was recently released under the GPL. That was pretty cool, but releasing q3 under the GPL or something similar would be unbelievable. I doubt this will happen, but I like to pretend;)
I think that people are misunderstanding my comment. I never said the US is a police state, however, I noticed several of the replies pretended I did. All I said was that we are headed toward one. It will not be happening tomorrow, or a year for now, or even ten years from now. But before you call me a lunatic and flame me ask yourself this question. Are we closer to a police state than we were 20 years ago? 10 years? 5 years? I think the answer to those questions is undeniably yes. As the emphasis on enforcing laws becomes comparatively greater than the emphasis on personal freedom, we move into more of a police state.
It seems to me that the U.S. is headed completely in the wrong direction. It seems as if my freedom is being restricted fairly regularly. Things like crypto, satelite phones, flag burning, et cetera dont seem to be liked by the government. They seem to think it is necessary to have a law for everything. I think they need to move away from the police state they are leading us into and take a step toward freedom. After all, freedom was perhaps the most important thing when this country was started.
I dont know about other schools but at my school computer security is a joke. If I tried, I'm sure I could find a new exploit everyday for a while. The not so intelligent sys admins run a Novell server and win9x clients. I am not saying that you cant have a secure system with this setup, but I am saying that at my school it isnt secure. I'm sure that this Sun setup comes with a good amount of natural security. This would be good for the not so intelligent sys admins at my school.
Based on the way things seem to be going, I'd say its more likely that politics change the net than the net changes politics. Hopefully things will not have to go this route though.
Now I will admit that I am not that experienced with slashdot as I've only been reading it for about 6 months. However, I think everyone spazzing out over poor moderation is ridiculous. It seems like people would rather receive a high score on a comment than actually find out whats going on in the nerd world;)
GPL for president!
Oh wait, the GPL is not the solution for everything.

Woah, China endorsing Linux is a necessary prerequisite for Linux growth? I thought it was growing just fine before they endorsed it.
