I can pick it apart for days, but like you, I don't have that time;-)
As you also mentioned, most of the points are ripped right from Apple. Apple are the ones that should get most of the desktop credit, for everything. Trashcan, taskbar, (do they have a start like button?), Minimize, Maximize, and Close buttons (often in the same places to keep them standard.)
I agree KDE and GNOME are awful and do not innovate much at all and slow things down a lot.
I use Fluxbox which only uses the taskbar by default (a very bare one might I add). There are no 'start like buttons', a menu is brought up with a right click anywhere. It is very lean and very fast. and highly configurable. The only real downside is that configuring is not user friendly at all, this is being improved on as it is a very young project still.
Windows can not take any credit at all for the desktop environment as that strongly belongs to Apple. The best anyone can do is improve on it.
Mono was create to keep interoperability between operating systems, not to copy and be a 'me too'.
The Minimize, Maximize, and Close buttons have been around forever in any windowed desktop and are not always in the same order. In TWM default you have close on the top left, minimize on the far right with no maximize. This style was around before Windows 3.1, saying anyone copied this from Windows is wrong.
Looking around at other peoples desktop screenshots, I see that most people are imitating OSX on the desktop and keeping away from looking anything like Windows. Even the use of desktop icons are diminishing and becoming less common.
The comparison is with Linux and Windows, if we get into the Unix stuff we open a huge can of worms that everyone has 'barrowed' from
>Highlight text and middle-click to copy Middle clicking is an innovation? Didn't Sun/really old graphical Unix have this years ago?
Yes, Sun had this first but Windows does not have this feature, period
>Tabbed internet browsers (Comparing to IE)
Is a browser part of Linux (OS)? If you claim innovation there, do you also take the blame for the crappy stuff too? Or is this one sided?
No, in Linux the browser is NOT part of the OS (which MS claims IE is)
What crappy stuff are you refering to? Lack of ActiveX??
>Live bootable CDs that don't require installation (If there are MS equivalents, please point them out) Floppy disk formated with/SYS
We are talking full desktop environment here, a floppy with/SYS does not give you a desktop environment
>Truly separate user environments Again, is this innovation or something that Unix had already?
Again, we are comparing Linux to Windows, not Unix
Could we get a few examples of Linux just playing catch-up and not being "Innovative"?
Here's some I see in Linux but not in Windows... Highlight text and middle-click to copy
Tabbed internet browsers (Comparing to IE)
Live bootable CDs that don't require installation (If there are MS equivalents, please point them out)
Truly separate user environments
I know I'm missing a bunch, but the only real 'catching up with Microsoft' I see with Linux is trying to keep interoperability working, which is a must in any business environment
I can't tell...did you want to mod me Troll or Informative?
I'm very sick of people dragging Lindows into these arguments as if they are some evil corp trying to take over the world. Sure, we don't really trust Michael, but Lindows has turned out to be a very excellent newbie distro.
BTW, I don't use Lindows but Gentoo. I just like to keep my facts straight on these topics, since most people here apperently do not
When was the last time you even looked at Lindows?? It sounds like NEVER and you are judging it from the Preview that came out 2 years ago.
Lindow does NOT run as root unless you want to, just like every other Linux distribution.
Take a read through their FAQ of searches for root and more specificly the one about 'pushing security' on the users.
Did you know Windows runs as root 5 years ago! Even Windows has locked down somewhat on user security. It's just that with Windows, if you run as an administrator, you are the administrator account.
That doesn't seem right to me. Sure Loki made the port and 'own' the Linux version. But Loki is dead and gone and sent their work back to the publishers.
I think this is a smoke screen excuse for them not to do it. Whey not contact the people that were behind Loki (Michael) and ask to release it?
Oh that's right, the guy bailed and went into hideing...
Hey jvm, thanks for posting the itching question of "Will this include the Loki Linux release?" up on http://www.linuxgames.com/
At least now I have a place I can watch for the answer!
I think it's is great when companies release their games for free, and I'm a sucker and will probably be downloading these soon.
But I haven't even booted Windows in months (except at work or when I need to work at home) and have been quite happy running Linux as many others are also.
I doubt that they will release the Tribes2 for Linux (even though after Loki went under all thier ports went back to the original publishers) but I remain hopeful that they will release it. And with Fileplanets file tracking they will get a solid number of how many people ARE interested in Linux gaming. I'd think it would be a good judgement on the current state, who would want to download it more then once? Besides the obsessive downloaders...
Give use the Linux version also, just so we can see how many downloads it gets.
Also considering you can pick up Tribes2 for Windows for $10 and if you are lucky you can find one for Linux for sale at the low price of $40
Ghostbusters for the Commodore64 was fun at the time, but very very repeditive and didn't seem to have an ending (or at least I never made it there since all the 'levels' were the same...
I'd like to see Ghostbusters done and done well. It would make a good PS2/Xbox/Gamecube game as a third-person
I thought Underworld was borked up enough...we don't need someone making that into a game.
Of course the 'story' from it would probably make a better game then it did a movie...you really had to look for the story in that movie.
I did like the movie, but they focused too much on the action and kind of let the story become passive...letting the action tell the story, ugg!
I always thought a TRUE Car Wars computer game would be great. The closest was Interstate 76, too bad I82 was a waste of time and development. Autoduel was great, but we need a more updated version.
Finally there was a recent Dune game made about a year or two ago. It was developed by Dreamcatcher; however, it sucked.
Sucked was an understatement. It didn't take very long at all to get bored/annoyed with that game. I don't think I even made it 1/8th of the way through before I shelved it...
It's a 1/4 mile away from the light when this even get triggered. For a speeder to even have a chance at making it through the light he's going to have to hit the Nitrous Boosters!
I don't care much for product placement, it usually sticks out like a sore thumb and looks like it was put there only for advertisements. I see this WAY too often in movies and it's almost sickening (but Wayne's World had an awesome bit about how product placement sucks as they were advertising all these different consumer brands, that was classic!)
I like when games make up brands that look like a real brand. GTA3 and Vice City did a great and creative job with making fake advertisements. How many people wanted to watch Exploder 3 after playing Vice City? Where can I get some Giggle Cream? (don't answer that) And I'm standing in line for the Degenetron!
Funny...but Trent Reznor's musical contribution to the game was beyond spectacular! Honestly, that was one of the reasons I got the game was for the soundtrack. The gameplay was OK and there was almost as story. But the audio had me hooked!
Did you see any numbers in that article or in the original posting? All it says is that it dropped the price $30 to $149.00 and that sales have doubled.
The question still stands...doubled from what?
I think you've out idiot'ed me by a longshot...by posting as an Anonymous Coward
I don't know what is so idiotic about pointing out that they failed to include sales numbers in this "report".
Intresting that they happen not to post any numbers to go with this "news". Does this mean that they have sold 20 last week as opposed to 10 the week before?
The Alienware laptops feature upgradable Video Cards.
But you are still stuck with the CPU, which is fine since (I think) 3Ghz is plenty for a few more years. Just make sure you also have room to upgrade the memory, but even 1Gig will keep you for a while
I'm running 1.4Ghz on my desktop and am still happy with it, only just now starting to think about upgrading.
Nice response, applause!
;-)
I can pick it apart for days, but like you, I don't have that time

Right, but it was called the Sneak Preview and was taken care of when the product shipped
I guess they can't take back insider and preview copies, eh?
When was the last time you even looked at Lindows?? It sounds like NEVER and you are judging it from the Preview that came out 2 years ago.

Not very long ago with Doom Legacy
That doesn't seem right to me. Sure Loki made the port and 'own' the Linux version. But Loki is dead and gone and sent their work back to the publishers.

The first one wasn't too bad as an RTS, but overly difficult to control.
But, the new FPS game looks great!
I thought Underworld was borked up enough...we don't need someone making that into a game.
Of course the 'story' from it would probably make a better game then it did a movie...you really had to look for the story in that movie.

Same thing in Chicago...even if the "No turn on red" sign was 'misplaced' (i.e. removed by a unknown individual)
I don't care much for product placement, it usually sticks out like a sore thumb and looks like it was put there only for advertisements. Microsoft making a Sourceforge project account??
That makes the new calculation to Armageddon, what, next week?
My laptop is limited to a 1400x1050 resolution with a 85Mhz refresh rate...ya, that just sucks.
