Good - It's been minutes since we had a pointless fight over standards.
A quick look at the Internet of Things docs yielded no mentions of the existing Internet of Objects effort. The MIT AutoID consortium, followed by the EPCGlobal organization, have defined an Object Name Service, ECPIS, and Discovery Services.
Defining an orthogonal standard will lead to our poor entities having existential angst over whether they are an "object" or a "thing".
You can admire Michelin for always pushing new products, but there are some inherent problems with this approach. The article mentions the rough ride. This is not a something that can be easily refined away. The reason that people use pnuematic structures for tires is their unique ability to envelope obstructions while still supporting load. This yields a smooth ride that a structural tire can't match. Whether it's made of metal, polymer, fiberglass or foam you have the same problem. If its stiff enough to support the load it transmits every little road irregularity to the car. It's like I showed you a perpetual motion machine that doesn't quite break even in energy, but promised that with refinement it would.
One of the landmark court cases on censorship involved Adolf Hitler's attempt to prevent Mein Kampf from being published in the US. He lost and his plans for world domination were made public. Apparently with web based media it's now easier to to enact censorship to conceal your intentions to potential enemies (like Europe and the rest of the world) than with print media.
Controlled suspensions on the market are mostly adaptive rather than active. They adapt the damping and may adapt the ride height at low frequencies. A fully active system has a large range of frequencies to handle. Its relatively easy to do the visually impressive low frequency parts of events such as a bumps, pot holes and body lean. The higher frequency components of events and from typical road roughness are tougher to isolate with active components. Notice that the Bose system uses a "wheel damper" to try to isolate mid frequencies. I wonder if anyone outside of Bose has ridden in the car? If you did, I suspect that while you head stayed level while driving, your teeth would be chattering from higher frequency vibrations the electromagnetic system couldn't catch.
Condi Rice - Wormtongue (obvious choice) Bush - Sauroman (trees being chopped down and burned in background to make weapons for preemptive war of global domination) Cheny - Sauron (the evil power behind it all) Wolfowitz - Gollum (My precious, I must have my precious Iraq)
Unfortunately, no one is available to cast for any of the heroes
Recently our national behavior has radically changed from action based on fact to action based on suspicion. Domestically the government now holds people incognito without charge and benefit of legal consul, based on mere suspicion. Internationally we have just attacked a nation at peace because Bush pronounced that he suspects that they may be a threat in the future. Lacking evidence for a legal UN action, Bush jumped to a unilateral, suspicion based first strike policy followed by an immediate invasion without time for citizens to react.
This is not a small change. While experience has show that there are relatively few real criminals and real threats to our nation, there is no bound on the number of suspicions an imaginative mind can have. The check on domestic power of the courts, and the check on unbounded aggression by the consent of the governed have been declared irrelevant by Bush.
With the recent slaughters in the automotive industry there is probably a flood of experienced engineer programmers. If you're willing to pay for exoerience and proven track record you should have no problem.
If you enjoyed 1000 you might enjoy 1066 by David Howath. I first read this account of an eventful year in the life of Britan in the 70s and have reread it several times.
