  1. Is jetlag a /significant/ issue or just annoying? on Fasting May Fix Jet Lag · · Score: 4, Insightful

Jetlag has not proven to be a significant issue with me or any of the people I have travelled internationally (as in, more than 5 time zones in one go) with. Is it only a significant issue to those who are changing timezone on an almost daily basis?

Typically if you're travelling west, you just get an hour's nap (or not) on the plane, but stay up an extra 5 - 8 hours or so (or less and go to bed a bit earlier). That's pretty easy to do. You will tend to wake up a little earlier than normal, but that's not a massive deal.

Travelling east is more difficult, as going to sleep 5 - 8 hours earlier is usually impossible (or impractical if still travelling) so you need to stay up an extra 8 - 12 or so hours, go to bed early, and get extra sleep that night. In both cases, you wind up waking up at roughly a sensible time.

Perhaps there is a significant group (who I do not travel with) who are unable to stay up for 28 hours on the odd occasion when it's necessary to resync with the local time zone? Or is it that if you do it, say, every week, this technique becomes totally impractical?

I bought an E70 just under a year ago thanks to that page. It's a pretty good phone, but I'd much rather have an iPhone that can do SSH (WITHOUT jailbreaking) and that has an external keyboard. The E70 does have a reasonable-to-use keyboard, but its Web browser sucks up memory, it's easy to break, the Java software running the phone crashes quite often, the interface is clumsy as hell..

Still, contract's up in July, so hopefully I can switch over to an iPhone then.. if they get an officially supported external keyboard and an SSH client on the app store!

Or maybe they're aware and actually support CCTV (like myself). Prosecuting people for letting their dogs crap on the streets is not an "abuse" of CCTV cameras. Letting your dog foul on the pavement is illegal and is a nuisance to pedestrians and nearby residents. They're also starting to use CCTV to catch people for parking violations.

CCTV *could* be abused at some point, but catching people doing illegal things with them is not an abuse. Perhaps if people actually get nailed for committing crimes they thought no-one had seen, the level of crime would actually drop. I (and a few other drivers) was almost wiped out by an idiot on the motorway yesterday undertaking at about 90 mph. With CCTV coverage, he could have been prosecuted. Instead, sod all happens and he'll keep driving like a twat until something worse happens.

Perhaps if people are worried about CCTV, they should stop screwing around on their wife, stop breaking laws, and stop acting like twats in public.

Of course, Cory could have just changed ISP and pointed out the net neutrality without turning it into some chest beating exercise.

Corporations are perfectly free to engage in these sorts of practices because the law allows them to. If we want true net neutrality, we need to have laws created as we did for POTS telcos. Complaining about one company will not help, and will probably encourage others to keep their "arrangements" under wraps.

    This is a great point.

It is tragic to keep calling on anecdotes, but it is certainly my personal experience that - certainly in the lower classes, in which I was raised - families with minority backgrounds socialize more with each other, both intra and inter family.

It would take quite a bit of research, but I wonder if it could be shown that the development industry has a statistically significant number of "only children" or children separated significantly by age from other siblings versus those from larger, more integrated family groups. I'd personally believe this to be the case.

Given this, and given that data show that ethnic minorities (certainly here in Europe) tend to have more children per family, this could perhaps add another couple of reasons for the disparity.

I gotta say, it's VERY rare I see any black people at programming related events. But.. it's also pretty rare to see women. A connection? Perhaps.

More than any other group I've come into contact with, programmers typically seem to be socially-stunted and have personality and mental issues (particularly depression, narcissism, and semi-autistic disorders). Thankfully, these issues tend to translate well into becoming great programmers.

In comparison, most black people and women I've come across, tend to be more outgoing and sociable. If I had the social skills most women and black folks seem to have, I probably wouldn't be a programmer either, because there are a lot more interesting things to do in this world if you don't mind interacting with regular people.

So perhaps we shouldn't lament why there aren't more women, blacks, whatever, in the software industry, but feel some relief that they're not mentally damaged enough to find the industry that interesting in the first place.

I'd wager that 99% of the world's female population don't date and marry "for money," (especially since most Western women now have their own career plans anyway) and since there are generally more women than men on the planet, there are plenty to "go around."

Having a man who isn't a complete waste of space IS important, of course, but money is only one indicator of that. You have decided to hold up a small fringe of pop music as representative of the whole. This is as dumb as when "regular" folks hold up fat, greasy, DND nerds as being representative of a "geek!"

Sure, there IS a lot of trash that meets your definition, but it's not representative of "popular" music as a whole. Further, covering old tracks, throwing some "base" drums in and rapping about "bitches" is hardly representative of rap or hip hop as a whole. You've basically taken the popular (not as in "Pop"), low quality fringe (in terms of total output) of some musical genres, and held them up as being entirely representative of those genres.
