I would have thought that having a second monitor flashing you news items every twenty seconds would be more distracting than just visiting websites when you have the urge to slack off.

And suddenly the horde of developers that have been writing all the crappy shareware apps for Windows start making Linux versions...
What about NAT, say, from Uni, or from behind a company firewall? One is the right connection, the other belongs to the 1337 haxx0r in the room next door.

Effectively leaving a way open to DoS yourself - the aforementioned cracker sends a number of 'knock' attempts, thereby locking you out while the system enforces the wait time.
Cracker resends, wait time, cracker resends... DoS.
What about AFTER the conflict? One of the main problems with landmines is that they hang around after the conflict has finished, unless they're detonated.
But then again, it's not hard to miss just one, maybe two, especially if you aren't organised (like some non-US armies may be).

Umm... I beg to differ. I just installed Office 2000 on an Aunt's '98 box, and it comes with Clippy installed and turned on by default.
She seems to like it, by the way, I just had to turn it off while I was teaching her how to use it so that my brain didn't melt.
(No trolls about OpenOffice.org please, she _has_ to have Office installed. *Sob* )
I see you missed the point.
It was a joke. The Firefox was an Uber-killy mind-controlled Soviet plane that one of Clint Eastwood's characters stole in some movie or other.
I would have thought that having a second monitor flashing you news items every twenty seconds would be more distracting than just visiting websites when you have the urge to slack off.
All in my humble opinion, of course.
> 98SE was a definate DOWNGRADE from 98.
Do tell (I'm genuinely interested).
The only difference that I really noticed was the presence of ICS in 98SE (something I needed before my *nix enlightenment).
And preferably mod the grandparent down.
We have that written on our caps. I call false advertising.

We're doomed.
> IBM makes the best gear, I swear.
:D
Too bad I've had to have my laptop (R40) replaced twice within one month, due to the screen dying on the first one, and the fan dying on the second.
The third one hasn't died yet. Here's hoping.

Yeesh, what is your wife's laptop? My Thinkpad R40 lasts for a good five hours, and the T40 is supposed to last even longer than that.
Very clever of you: make mistake, correct yourself, both posts modded up! Score!
Ooh, I bet you got a shining reference out of _that_ one.
Right, That's it. I'm moving to New Zealand as soon as I can get enough cash saved up. *Sigh*
And then maybe Sweden after NZ gets its very own American-Compliant FTA.

I'm just hoping there's the option to turn the double-delay-click thingy back on, as it's what I use most on the Windows box here.

For me it always meant "New Game".
But it's a nice little hack/crack all the same, whoever found it (probably not the grandparent poster, I'd hazard a guess). :-)

What, like Australia, where teachers constantly have to fight to keep their pay to something above minimum wage?
NAT. One person scans from behind a University NAT box, and the entire Uni is blocked. Or, at least, that particular NAT box.
What about NAT, say, from Uni, or from behind a company firewall? One is the right connection, the other belongs to the 1337 haxx0r in the room next door.

Zealot, even. Yeesh, my English has been going down the loo of late.
*Bzzzt*
_RMS_ is the ultimate zealots.
Linus is the most cool and calm chap I've heard / read.

Umm... I hate to bite, but "Ray" is a chap's name.
I can't put an almost-whispy 14 year-old to "Ray"...
I just get the mental image of some middle-aged bloke in a loud Hawaiian shirt.
Umm... The BOFH (Bastard Operator From Hell) concerns the machinations of a certain evil sysadmin called Simon.
It's fiction (we hope). It also happens to be a damn funny read. Why was the parent modded 'informative' of all things?
And I'm not fashionable.
Where does that leave me?
