  1. I've bought my last Mac. on Return of the Mac · · Score: 1

Some number of years ago I bought an iMac for my parents to use to surf the web, do some simple word processing, scan in photos of the kids and make picture CDs. Recently she wanted to upgrade her printer. The printer driver only supported os 9.1 or os X. Since the box was running 9.0 it was time to upgrade. I tried to find a copy of 9.1 figuring it would be more likely to be compatible with the older iMac. Unable to find it I got a copy of osX. That's when the trouble started. Seems the old iMac required a firm ware upgrade. But if you follow the install instruction for os X you don't find this out until the os X installer comes up and says you need a firm ware upgrade. The exact phrase is exit the installer and upgrade your firm ware. The problem is after that the installer won't exit. The Finder won't find and holding the power switch in wont turn it off. So after a while I pulled the plug. Then the iMac wouldn't boot. It wouldn't even eject the now stuck CD. After calling Tech support and going through about 5 dudes, several days and lots and lots of power ups holding down the mouse, holding down this set of keys and that, I got nothing. One techi had me open the case and press a firmware short out button which was supposed to reset the firmware. Nothing. I paid a premium for that iMac in terms of price/performance expecting it would work better or be less of a hassle in the long run. But that was not the case. The help desk guys kept telling me that my power supply or switch must have gone out just when the os X installer was trying to exit or that my firm ware was corrupted just at that moment. They were less than helpful. I eventually took the thing apart, pulled the stuck cd out and returned os X. Fortunately Fry's took it back even though it was obviously opened. So, I then further disassembled the machine with an 8 pound sledge hammer. That was fun. Now my mom has a PC from Dell. much less costly than buying a mac. $400 and it came with a monitor. You can't by a mac for that. No sense buying a 'better' box if it's not any 'better'. No more apple products here. ______________________________________ There are 10 kinds of people, Those who know binary and those who don't.

Since the advent of early voting here in Texas I have not once voted on election day. The lines for early vointg are short and one may vote at any poling station. This is very nice since I can vote near my work place during a late lunch break. (If you go during the nominal lunch hour there maybe a considerable wait so just have lunch at 2pm that day.) So I would like the federal holiday very much. I could go fishing! In any case since early voting includes Saturday and Sunday and strechtes from 7am to 8pm *during the last* week of early voting I don't see why anyone can not fit in voting and working.

I will agree with your comments as long as the law does very specifically state what deceptive statements are. For instance, listing the wrong date or polling places on a flyer. I'm not sure what else could be included. One could not say that statements like "George Bush: the right choice for liberal America." While he is not a liberal some will argue that he is still the right choice for liberal America. Also it should not be a felony. A misdemeanor punishable with fines and community service should do with that service performed in the community where the deception occurred. My real problem with the bill is automatically giving felons their franchise back. These are not the sorts of people I want participating my government. Additionally felons should not be allowed to hold elected office either. Perhaps some sort of clemency could be used to give felons back the franchise but this should be something one has to work for not just be given.

What if she has always wanted to be really big ? is that abusive ? where does one draw the line ? What is someone is really short because of underdeveloped limbs ? The equality operator should work on dereferenced objects. If there is a need in Java to compare pointers then some sort of IsTheVerySameThing() function could be applied.

The C/C++ derefernce example does not apply. One has a choice when creating objects/structs in C/C++. These objects can be stack variables or heap variables. This makes it more important to specifically require a dereference operator. In Java objects are created on the heap. period. There is no pointer syntax, no dereferencing, no etc... So, the equlity operator should be used as a logical compare not a pointer compare.

Two points. 1) The equality function can test for some special condition other than equality: this is not unique to the equality operator. 2) The equality operator in Java is inconsistent. For simple types it performs a logical comparison and for classes it performs a pointer comparison. So the correct syntax for clarity and conformity in Java should be 3.compareTo(3.00)

If you've ever been a programmer you would not be afraid of overloaded operators.
