  1. Sound like what Steve Jobs said a few days ago on Why IE9 Will Not Support Codecs Other Than H.264 · · Score: 1

When Steve Jobs trashed Adobe Flash, didn't he say that Apple was going to use h.264 'cause it was an open standard. Admittedly, he was trashing Adobe in the same breath, but it seems to me that Microsoft is putting up the same sorta arguements. Both want to restrict browsers to h.264 for video. The only difference I see is that Microsoft did not bad-mouth Adobe Flash directly. That's just my opinion.

  2. Poster should RTFA on Reducing One Amino Acid Could Increase Lifespan · · Score: 1

TFA does not mention tryptophan at all. TFA says lifespan increase is due to reduced calorie diet. Methionine, says TFA, was added to the diet to reverse lost fertility. TFA says, "Long life may stem from a proper imbalance of dietary nutrients" It don't say shit about restricting any amino acids to live longer. It says add one to be able to reproduce. What I read says that reduced calorie diet with some yet unknown supplement mix of vitamins and amino acids could extend lifespan.

  3. It can make a difference on US DoD Poll On Leap Seconds · · Score: 1

when you are dealing with multi-year timespans where a second or two one way or the other can make a significant difference -- mainly astronomy, celestial mechanics, and satellite stuff.

Last time I had to deal with leap seconds in software, I found this: Sources for Time Zone and Daylight Saving Time Data which describes a system level time information database that includes leap seconds as well as Daylight Savings Time and time zones.

There are leap-second-aware time functions available that can be rolled into GNU C. Once they are in place, adding a leap second is a trivial sysadmin operation to update the time-info-database. Then all software using it will be correct without need to re-build or recompile.

  6. Unsafe Planet or Stoopid People ? on Too Many People in Nature's Way · · Score: 2, Interesting

The planetary hazards have been here for millions of years. I believe the collective human population to be increasingly stoopid.

  8. What a load of fertilizer on Hilary Rosen Gripes About iPod, iTMS · · Score: 1

She says : "There are lots of places you can go for great music at good deals and with a deep catalog of songs from over the last 20 or 30 years. MSN.com, Rhapsody.com, aolmusic.com, even walmart.com." Yea, and all of them "offer" music in Microsoft's proprietary, uneditable, unconvertable format.

  9. How much was added/changed after DNA'a death ? on Ask 'Hitchhiker's Guide' Exec. Producer Robbie Stamp · · Score: 5, Interesting

Consider: Every "incarnation" of tHHGttG has had variations such that no two are alike. Not including this one, Douglas Adams had a direct hand from start to finish of each version, so one cannot make remarks about accuracy or authenticity.

While DNA started this one, he was taken from us before its completion.

SO, my question is : Which "divergences" in this version were done (by/under the guidance of) Douglas Adams and which (if any) were done by other folks after his passing.

FWIW, I plan to ignore the critics and go see this film with a child-at-Christmas expectation. It should be great Eye Candy if nothing else.
