I would even say that it is absolutely valid for a public health agency to advocate substituting physical activities for video games, board games, reading, and other non-physical activites for purely health related reasons.
The problem is that they didn't do this. They just jump straight to the scare tactic of saying you will die if you play video games.
They actually do do this: The problem is the summarizer in the original column saw the picture of the kid with a controller and jumped straight to the scare tactic of saying the government says you will die if you play video games. What the campaign is actually attacking is the sedentary lifestyle that some parents let their children lead these days. These were a series of magazine ads placed in mags to reach the extreme end of their target market - there is also a much more positive get your kids active for 60 minutes as part of this campaign. I don't have a problem with this.
Kids (and this ad is aimed at parents of inactive kids) should be a *lot* more active than just twenty minutes a day. I don't see why the cancer troupe is in there but this advert is also co-sponsored by the British Heart Foundation and Diabetes UK, charities that deal with diseases that are brought on by obesity (80% link between obesity and diabetics I believe), and childhood obesity.
Maybe the charities own page may help clarify and balance the summary in the vitriolic summary:
Why so hard hitting? Some of the messages may be hard hitting but market research told us we had to be.
The campaign was developed using focus groups made up of mums from our target audience.
What these groups showed us was that the messages had to be direct enough to make them take notice and think Could this be me and my kids?.
This isn't aimed at slashdotters and gamers aware enough to get their own exercise, or make their children so, and the choice of marketing reflcts that. I imagine the Venn diagram of Heat Magazine and Slashdot being quite small.
Bring out a wii version of the Wavebird - that really was my favourite of the controllers on the last gen systems. The biggest thing (not just wavebird specific) was being able to tell what buttons you were pressing without looking down because of the different shapes. The Xbox controllers in particular took ages for me to get accustomed to.
In a way yes - women are after richer men, so given that Apples cost twice as much as the equivalent Windows branded PC there could be a subconcious motivating factor.
Dictated to Jeeves who is typing this into my MacBook Air for me. After this he will get me another vodka martini. No I won't.
The main issue Apple will have to overcome is the perception issue surrounding Jobs.
Personally I think the main issue Apple will have to overcome is that their products typically are at the pricier end of the market in a period where there is going to be tightening of belts. Apples shares and fanbois will have issues over Jobs' health over the next few years, but of longer term interest outside of the ipod market is going to be interesting times for them in terms of market share and Windows 7 looking like making amends for Vista.
This story has been up 8 minutes and I only see 5 posts of the same obvious joke, out of 13 posts. Come on/. get you asses in gear.
Well, your primary problem is that to get the conception process going is getting out asses out of gear. For conception purposes, gear does not get put in asses.
Being more refined, I spilt a Gin & Tonic all over my keyboard. The keyboard doesn't work now - maybe it was the drink, but as it was an MS jobby I'm willing to bet it was a Zune like crash. Crappy Microsoft products.
He's quite clearly an Apple guy, and like all their fanbois he is a religous zealot, who will do his hardest once president to push to ensure the spirit of the Mac leader does not die. After all, he has pledged to create 2.5 million Jobs - I just hope they've ordered a load of black turtlenexk sweaters for all those clones.
It may be the process of the battery being charged while its plugged in that inteferes with signals - it certainly can affect recording audio via a mic input in a laptop.
The numbers actually suggest there are quite significant savings of lives and serious injury.
From DFT websites 2004 survey... Overall 42% fewer people were killed or seriously injured. At camera sites, there was also a reduction of over 100 fatalities per annum (32% fewer). There were 1,745 fewer people killed or seriously injured and 4,230 fewer personal injury collisions per annum in 2004. There was an association between reductions in speed and reductions in PICs.
Also, the cameras have to be placed where there have been at least 4 fatalities in a stretch of road due to accidents caused by speeding in a rolling period of three years, as well as a total number speed-induced (ie including non-fatal ) accidents. So for all the speed cameras you see put in place in the past 10 years there have been at least three times as many deaths at that site that have occured.
From conversations I've had with Americans, I've been left with the impression that American citizens on the whole care less about NSA security letters, secret wiretapping, PATRIOT act misuse than they do about legislation that might inhibit car usage in some way. For instance I've been told, it doesn't matter how many lives speeding cameras save, they just would not happen anywhere in the US.
Yeah, but I don't think its that much like their currently pushed Microsoft OS. I mean, the screen shot offering a Russian Mail Order bride isn't something I've seen in Vista.

The Boston Tea Party wasn't a boycott, it was blatant destruction of property.
AMERICA WAS CREATED BY TERRORISTS!!! LOL!!!

I think you meant to say wish there.
We need to educate them by bringing them all here! Which brings me to a question: Why is there no 'invite friends' function on Slashdot!?
He's coming back (according to his note) at the end of June.
This dude sounds more and more like Jesus!

yea, they need someone who has the hormones of a 13 year old girl to buy their products!
There, fixed that for you.

At the major corporation I work for...
I agree - I think the fact the poster is working for Microsoft is at the root of the problem.
Plus they could feedback system where viewers can say how good or bad they thought the movie was, and call it iRate.
This has huge repercussions on my ability to torrent porn. I would not call this a minor issue.
Yes, I believe that both candidates are agreed that porn and minors are a no-no.

Did "read" really have those single quotes around it? That would have been pretty 'suspicious' to me. Wink, wink, nudge, nudge.
No, but the word 'Cancel' in the dialog box was replaced with the phrase 'Say No More'....

"Opera developing it" - Oh noes! We need this now, if Opera has it then FF needs it!
There, fixed that for you.
My girlfriend keeps insisting on me using SOAP before we interface - now I know its Microsofts fault.
