Where I work (Small regional wireless co) 80% of our equipment is DC. Granted that most of that power is for the telco switches a great deal are sun and other servers. The advantage for dc is only having to convert power once. We have a power plant (inverters,rectifiers and a huge battery bank) that takes up an entire room. To keep the battery bank charged requires converting from AC->DC. If the power goes out the batteries take over, end of story. If we were all AC in the switch room we would have to do another conversion from the DC in the batteries back to AC meaning more equipment, losses from the conversion and so less efficiency and more points of failure.
Depending on how long it takes for the in-laws new home to be built perhaps just getting a second cable modem would be the solution. Where I live a years worth of broadband would be about $450.

but that is only half of it. A bts is not designed to connect to the pstn. You would still need a GSM switch. Nortel makes what they call an e-cell which is meant for small buildings or inside malls. It costs $30,000. You are probably better off using WiFi or something like this.

Good points but. The free market is not utopia. And yes I do think everything should be privatized. But it is the best chance we have to get as close as possible. When talking about monopolies I find it interesting that people don't apply the term consistently. Most people agree that monopolies are bad. Absent competition, prices are higher and quality is lower. For some reason when it comes to government people seem to think that monopolies are good. But the same principles apply. Higher prices and lower quality.

I find it surprizing that you are more cynical about private enterprize than you are of government. Don't like WalMart? No biggie. Don't give them your money. You don't have that choice with government.

And like I told the last poster, It doesn't matter if it is more expensive, if service is better or worse. It only matters what is moral. Yeah, some asshole might want to charge me $10 bucks a day to use his road. So what? Nothing gives me the right to use his property without his consent.

and the services governmment provides. Of course the gas station doesn't steal from me. I have a CHOICE of whether or not to patronize it. Not so with 'gubment. The so-called services are proveded for me whether I like it or not and I am forced to pay for it.
Like I said in my original post, the benefits are irrelevant, the fact is that Taxes are theft. Theft is immoral therefore Taxes are immoral. If I stick a gun in your face and demand 30% of the money in your wallet but give you something in return is that not theft?

Not one of my prouder moments but one night while getting into bed I decided to do a safety check on the 12 gauge I keep beside it. (yeah, I know. stupid) Well, it was off. the muzzle was about 2 inches away from the wall and blew a 3 inch hole
right through it. Luckily there was only birdshot loaded up. On the other side of the wall is my computer room. Couple of pc's one of which was an old acer running openbsd used for nat/firewall. After my heart stopped beating a hole in my chest I inspected the room. shot marks streaked across the wall. The coax going to my cable modem had about 50 pieces of shot imbeded in it and the front of my firewall was shattered. To my surprize it all still worked. Looked like hell but it worked. Btw after a visit to Home Depot for some trim, paint and spackle (lots and lots of spacle) I ended up getting my whole deposit back. Bitchin eh?

He has a laptop, cellphone (often nextel), handheld police band radio, pager, fire/ambulance radio, FM radio, lights, sirens, sometimes radar, and video camera's. That's not a distraction? A cellphone or laptop aint shit compared to all that.
Point is, there are always distractions around us, video billboards, kids, food, an accident at the side of the road.
