  1. Re:Well.. on Cray CTO: Linux clusters don't play in HPC · · Score: 1

I was not clear enough this morning. Let me try to explain so you will see where i am going. The fact is Crays are not the most powerful machines and probably will only be at any single given moment. Technology marches on. To say that Linux is not suitable is much to broad a stroke to paint. For Linux continues to confond those who would box it in and say it has no place here or anywhere else. Now the comment regarding the Cray way is a dead-end. High Cost non-standardized, non-modular systems are a dinasour from the past. Sure you can do some amazing things with this type design, but the lack of economy of scale is why CRAY has had money problems. The world wants cheap/scalable power. Sure you can sell these things to governments but private busines will not be so quick to bite...they have to earn their money. And the faster systems according to your precsious TOP500...are not CRAYs. The man was a visionary...but that doesnt mean for all time. Hello and welcome to the modern world. Big dedicated computers like the Crays are a dying bread. By any measure they are a fraction of a percent. Hope that helps to clear up my statement for those who cant see the obvious.

First plenty of people have explained here that hes only using 6Watts of power to do this. Your puny JL's will not do this. (These guys are using JBL style drivers...look at the cones you can tell :) ) These are not car type devices which tend to be very low efficiency. These are PRO SOUND drivers (not to be confused with the aftermarket car guys claiming they are PRO Sound. The term refers to Professional Sound Reinforcement ie Concert type speakers. JL does not do this nor does any car sub company.) These drivers are close to 100dB/1w1m sensativitey not 85dB/1w1m. Also they are most likely 16 ohm drivers giving him a 4 ohm load to his amp. Beyond all of these differences the major difference is that he has distortion in the UNMEASUREABLE RANGE.....where as IIASCA pretty much is just measureing distortion. IIASCA may make a lot of money playing to the booming kiddies out there but as far as serious acoustics and sound quality they are a friggin joke. If you cant tell this thing must sound incredible. It has some very serious acoustics behind it and the designer has chosen to not compromise on the setup. I bet it can make your skin crawl :) I have experienced 4 18" Pro subs in a horn loaded design (Klipsch did this a few years ago at CES). It was fantastic. They used 3 watts of power to drive the subs :) Braggin about how many watts you speakers take is sorta like bragging about how much gas you car burns per mile. Less is more....not the other way round.

While HD's are now common pieces between macs and pcs it is by no means the PCs fault. So CUT THE SHIT dumbass. It doesnt take 20mins to copy 7mb file on any decent machine mac or pc. So it would appear that your computer has some serious problems so it must be the PCs suck...wrong. Ive sold and installed thousands of MACS and thousands of PC's. Even Macs have problems.... Wow i can do all these things on my PCs and macs with no problems. Well lets see you can listen to songs in their entirety on Napster which you cannot do on iTunes. It does not cost $13.50 to make/market/profit from a CD. Sorry that just doesnt work. Take a look at say a DVD player at Wal-mart for $39. It has way more cost of goods in it...and it sells for a lot less margin. For your information i own a manufacturing company and do extensive work in AUDIO. I can tell you it does not cost anywhere near the $13.50 to make a CD and market it. Another point that shoots yours down is TAPES...they are sold at lower prices then CD's ... yet cost more to produce...explain that one SHERLOCK....you cant can you...dont defend the big record labels to me....you will not win. And no CD's shouldnt be a $1 how about $5-$10 somewhere in there.

I myself am a manufacturer of Audio systems and find it unbelieveable that i would set a minimum price. In fact, MSRP Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price is just that A SUGGESTED retail price...in the end if you choose to sell it below cost and make it up in volume thats your business not mine. Once i sell the item to another it is theirs to resell as they choose unless we have a written prior agreement. Without this agreement (which i dont believe there is in this case) i have no legal grounds to prevent them from selling it as they see fit. Also while 2 wrongs dont make a right....3 lefts do :P
