Mod parent up. It won't be too far off in the future when computers will be better at math and science. All the good jobs will be in creative and liberal arts fields. And for those who might suggest that creativity is required to make advances in math and science, the fact that those fields conveniently include provable theories makes genetic algorithms a good replacement for traditional creativity.
He's simply setting up the next point, which is that most people will avoid doing the mixing on the plane or in a secure area and will instead simply bring the pre-mixed explosive onboard. By limiting the size of the container, the total damage from an explosion is reduced.
I saw you speak in NYC when you were promoting The Confusion. You mentioned that the book is 99% historically accurate and something along the lines of "If it sounds unbelievable, it's true. The inaccuracies are simply in little details."
I am not sure how literally that's meant to be taken. The vast majority of the trilogy and most of the "unbelievable" events revolve around the actions of fictional characters. All of the main characters are fictional, and the characters that are not fictional are brought into the plot by their interactions with the main (fictional) characters.
I found myself wondering - was there an actual woman in history who Eliza represented? I tend to think not as there is no Quelghm. Without Eliza, many of the book's "historic" events would not have existed.
Same for Daniel. Obviously SOMEONE founded MIT. Does the rest of Daniel's life parallel the founder's?
As much as I have been enjoying reading the trilogy, I keep being bothered by these questions. every time something interesting happens. In any case, historical or not, I am a huge fan of your writing and am constantly surprised by the direction taken by each new book you write.
there are only about 200-300 towers for sale, and they are the ones that have been designated as "surplus" towers. the list that was posted in one of the comments on here listed some several thousand towers. that list is all the towers nationally, but like i said there are only about 200-300 for sale.
i majored in cs and dont use any of what i got tested over. but the one thing that has proven invaluable is that you learn how to learn. you may be self-taught now, as was i before starting college, but you really don't know the meaning of having to really learn something until you have been in a situation like college. you will become much more of a better learner, you will pick things up more quickly, and you will have a higher quality of work.
these are not things that you will pick up on your own. you need to be in a situation like college - expecially if you have a job in college - that pushes you to your limits.
avoid trade schools for the same reason. even though you are a techie and you dont see the relevance in taking classes in the arts and other non-science "wastes of time" let me assure you that there is very real relevance in it. you will not remember most of what you learn, but you will retain the skills you used to learn it, and that is what college is all about.
finally, dont be lazy. work hard now and do everything you can so that you can be lazy later in life.
Oh really? Well I happen to know of quite a few bands who are not famous in the sense that Madonna and Metallica are, but they are big enough to have gotten 1 song on MTV. Every one of these people is living large in a huge house and living the good life of a rockstar. Im not saying the record company doesn't take more than their fair share - they do - I'm just saying that these guys are far from flipping burgers.
It looks like you might be having a hard time drawing the lines here... I will try to clear this up for you guys who ovbiously slept thru networking 101.
The Physical Layer is composed of just the medium of transmission itself. Hence the word "physical". It does not have anything to do with what type of signals go down it, or how they are injected into the medium. Cringley has his definitions right.
As for Shannon - if you use some means of transmission that includes enough error correction to raise the SNR then what's the problem? You say that you are only getting 33 Mbps max right now, and that you dont see how that can be increased. That's exactly what this article is talking about - how to raise the SNR.
So it's not perfect - big deal!
Look, there is no "perfect" solution. You just have to do the best you can. And even if these preventative measures dont catch everyone, if they can catch one person who means to do us harm, then it is worth it.
please mod this up. the last thing we need is for a bunch of geeks to go down there and talk about how windows sucks. i know it, you know it, but quite frankly, the people who are suffering under a pile of concrete could give a rats ass.
let it rest for a bit...
