What I get out of this is that the kids are not her priority. Her fear is of trouble from her neighbors, child protective services etc. Before you defend the cocooning and overprotection of these kids, see how long each of you can sit in a house without a computer doing whatever they do in there. I bet you can't make it 15 minutes. The point is that denying children a healthy lifestyle that affords normal child development has nothing to do with how dangerous it is in her neighborhood. In the US over 300000 + kids are maimed and killed on playgrounds. Compare that to a maximum of 5 kids dying of handgun injuries in a day, which is your child really likely to encounter - a playground or a hand gun, drive by etc. Another poster was right. An overprotect mother teaches her children they are not trustworthy and that life is full of danger and fear. Actually it is not challenging these charges from the family and child protective services that is the biggest danger to her kids. As Mommy's friend, take a stand but don't presume fatherly duties. geeeeez

Why have kids if parents are so fearful that said kids are not allowed to take any normal risks or to explore the world with their senses? No risks = no growth, No climbing trees or other hazardous risks = being uncomfortable and awkward in your own body. It is a choice to have children. If you cannot provide a healthy environment for them to grow, then move to a simpler less affluent place for the too few significant years required to allow a child to become a whole person.
Or make the sacrifice to wait until you can. My father said, "only have kids if you can provide a lifestyle with at least as many opportunities as you had, hopefully more." Risks are also how children learn to think autonomously and to make choices. Besides research does show that hyperactive, attention deficit disorder is related to the amount of television and computer games watched by children. I just finished seven years of classwork and research and have a ph.d and i have a question for you, mr smartguy, haven't you ever heard of modifying a topic or looking at it in a more creative way. A lot of suggestions are really good and of course anyone can do research at whatever level they are on. High school dropouts buy cars and manage to research what they want. No offense,
I have one of Eagle Creek's backpacks and it is now almost 7 years old and it is as good as new. I have seen laptop sleeves that they sell to stash your laptop inside but haven't bought one. I can vouch for their guarantee which is for the life. It requires almost no care and I carry anything from doctoral dissertation data (mountains of it), textbooks and even the laptop.
My previous laptop was a thinkpad and a friend bought me a port bag. It turned out to be heavy but industrial strength. If you absolutely can not allow anything to happen to your laptop or data, this will do the trick. I found it more than I needed and ended up returning it. It is sort of like a NASA spacesuit (the Port) compared to a snowsuit (ordinary laptop sleeves or cheaper bags. They are very professional and efficient in their service and I had no trouble with the return.
Word pairs like these are on the Graduate Record Exam which most graduate schools require for admission. I seem to remember some of these also on the SAT. Presumably then high school, college graduates and above would tend to know these. Your comment does point out the fallacy of assuming knowledge of these pairs via a test score.
