Guess what, you rarely see characters going to the bathroom or sleeping either. Rather than calling it a "glaring technical problem," you assume they do it off-screen at some point.

I have to tell you, some of your post comes off as anti-business.

Microsoft can be said to be evil as a company, because they play so rough in the marketplace that they have ruined countless companies in their growing process.

Being successful in the marketplace and "ruining" competitors doesn't make one "evil." If I sell better lemonade than the stand down the street and put them out of business through my superior marketing and distribution, that doesn't mean I'm evil. I agree that Microsoft's OEM deals in the 90s were anti-competitive, but that also doesn't make someone evil. Evil is a very subjective, religious term that is grossly misused by Slashdotters.

Microsoft doesn't care about quality, they care about money. They will care about quality (and they're moving in that direction these days) when shoddy products stop making just as much money as good ones.

They do care about quality; their legacy codebase makes it difficult to produce any. Obvious this is something to fault them for, but to claim they only care about money is silly. All companies care about financial returns for their efforts.

Apple apparently plans to adopt Pages for all its internal documentation needs. Apple doesn't need to approach the level of functionality in Office, as the majority of people only use a tenth of what Office offers anyway. If they can make a decent Word alternative for most people, that's good enough.

Looking at that page also reveals that you have to have a storage device to use Live, which means either buying the expensive Premium 360 or buying a Core and shelling out for the hard drive separately. Again, I believe the Xbox 360 is the poorest deal and the most overpriced of all three consoles.

Why can't they compete with Microsoft? Microsoft is in a potentially bad position. In 2007, a hardcore gamer with money to spend on a high-end console will eventually go with the Playstation 3 when supplies aren't limited (Sony still has 80% user base of the home console market, last I read). Everyone else will be getting Wiis, along with hardcore gamers wanting a secondary Nintendo system. This puts the 360 in a middleground position where it has to compete for both hardcore and casual markets that the other guys are specializing on. They also have to compete with free online gaming--Sony and Nintendo won't be requiring subscription fees.

How many consoles do you think Nintendo and Sony will be selling next holiday season?

Probably a lot more than the 360 is selling right now. Nintendo and Sony are constrained by supply issues just like the 360 was 12 months ago. Nintendo has previously said they expect to ship up to 4 million worldwide by the end of the year, which is nearly half of what Microsoft has sold in the last 12 months. If people take to the Wii like they took to the DS, then Microsoft needs to worry because the hardcore gamers will be spending their money on the PS3 and maybe Wii on the side, and the mainstream casual gamers will be getting Wiis. Despite everyone's love of hating Sony lately, they still dominate the home console market, and the PS2 is selling more than the 360, while Nintendo owns casual gaming and portables. YAXS (Yet Another XBox Shooter) isn't going to change Microsoft's market position.

You can play it solo, but it's just not the same experience (except for perhaps bowling and golfing which fare better as solo games). The Wii is the kind of system grandmas will keep around to pull out for when their grandkids come over. It's something everyone can enjoy, much like the original NES before "hardcore" gamers took over the market and turned everything into sports games, racing games with "Street" or "Underground" in the titles, and first-person shooters.

It's pretty disingenuous of you to not mention that you're referring to the Core configuration, which has no wireless capability or hard drive.

If you buy a Core system for $300 and actually want to save your game or have XBox 1 compatibility, that's an additional $100 for the hard drive add-on, putting you up to $400 (Microsoft really wants you to get a hard drive). Along with a game, that's $450, and at that high of a price, you may as well just shell out for the Premium configuration at a whopping $400, which is $450 if you include a game.

And after all that, you still have to pay Microsoft money every month just to be able to play online. Microsoft currently has no plans to make Xbox Live free, while Sony and Nintendo will offer it totally free.

Of the three consoles, I actually consider the Xbox 360 the most overpriced. Nintendo can justify their price with the built-in WiFi, 512MB flash storage, and remote control, while Sony can cite Blu-Ray and the Cell in contributing to the cost of the PS3. I really think the 360 will be in trouble in the next two years when Sony sorts out its supply issues and everyone else picks up the Wii as a cheap primary or secondary console.
