Who modded this down?? This person makes a good point. Here we are talking about MS basically beating everyone out of business, and the fact that lawsuits have been filed against MS for that very thing, and here's MS blatantly doing what they were just sued for...I'd mod this for Interesting...

The comment about using FDISK I believe was to make the point that you are simply creating a new partition....i.e. you can't just plug a hard drive with existing unencrypted data in and automatically have it encrypted. You have to create the partition with the device plugged in.

  5. nVidia vs ATI Driver Support? on ATI vs. NVIDIA: ATI Steals the Show · · Score: 1

I don't have an ATI card, so I haven't been paying attention to the driver support. How often does ATI release drivers that provide practical updates, or bug fixes? I've found that nVidia is not too bad. Any thoughts?

  6. Thoughts and Alternatives on Spammers Sue Anti-Spam Groups · · Score: 1
When you look at all the spam problems, you see that those being spammed do not like it, and want to do something about it to protect their privacy rights among others. However, when this happens you get the spammers themselves filing lawsuits because of a violation of THEIR rights and such.

Personally, I'm completely against any and all forms of spam, or any commercial mailings of any sort unless there is an explicit request for information from an individual.

IDEA: I think that any and all advertising companies should be held accountable to have a database or list of EVERY persons request to receive mailings from them. That way, if they are ever taken to court, they can prove that the user requested such mailings. And if the company is too stupid to keep such a file...sue away...make them pay for not keeping track of their business. It's a requirement when it comes to Accounting practices...you have to keep all your information together, and you can't throw it out...why should it be any different here?

I know this is obvious, but it seems like the Spam suits, as well as the RIAA, MPAA, and DMCA suits are all arising because nobody is thinking about things reasonably, or they are not considering the consequences...everyone out there wants to do whatever they want with the power they have attained. For example, instead of spending the $$$ on all these DMCA lawsuits, just save time, and give the money to all the artists, or people that are complaining to start. The majority of what seems to be resulting is that a lot of lawyers are getting some nice retirement packages.

yes...as full of humour, and sense of realism as the movie, Enemy of the State was...this becomes all the more realistic now. It really does freak someone out to know that not only are they thinking of this sort of monitoring, but they are also starting to implement it.

  8. Memory Controller Built In? on Opteron Benchmarked Against Xeon · · Score: 1

If the memory controller is built into the processor, does that not mean that in order to update to a better memory technology, that you would have to redesign the processor, or at the very least buy a new processor? I can see the performance enhancements of the on chip controller, and dedicated memory, but will this not make for expensive upgrades?

  9. Re:Blocking /. referrers on Opteron Benchmarked Against Xeon · · Score: 1

They haven't blocked it. They are just experiencing SAS (Slashdot Appearance Syndrom) It'll come back in a couple hours...but I have to ask, why is it that so many sites crack under the pressure of a /. posting? I mean, if there's all these people from the /. community that are visiting these sites, that must mean that those users all once were here, so why don't these servers crack? I would suppose it's because of the limited graphic usage here. That and the boat-load of ads that sites use. I guess that'll teach them not to put so many ads on their sites! :)

  10. Real correlation between piracy and losses? on Time to Face the Music · · Score: 2, Interesting

Does the recording industry actually have concrete proof of a direct correlation between apparent loses and music piracy? It seems to me like there is also the possibility that the quality and effort put into new music is going down as well. I do agree that music piracy is undoubtedly reducing the overall revenue. However, another possibility is that the lost revenue is simply the CD's that people stopped buying because people were actually able to try out CD's before they bought them.
