  1. Re:Consider the do it yourself way... on Parent-Friendly Wireless Bridge To Span 500 Meters? · · Score: 1

I wouldn't recommend the use of anything more than 200 feet of buried cable, simply because of RF attenuation. Most carrier frequencies for high speed data over cable are around 600+ mHz, which (depending on cable gauge) would drop off to near nothing over the distance being described. Simple house amplifiers may work to keep the signal high enough, but the gain on most amps would likely result in a terrible signal to noise ratio and as a result: spotty connection. The best option may be to dig the trench yourself (DitchWitch rental for the afternoon), lay the conduit (ask for the specs from the cable provider), and contact the cable company for the remainder. I can't imagine it would be 10K for simply the conduit push and cable. Make sure to follow power and phone to your property (easements) and GET LOCATES! You don't want to be the asshole who strikes power...

  2. human experience on Once Upon A Game · · Score: 1

literature typically excells in sharing in the human experience. what makes literature compelling is how the author relates the reader to the characters or the situation. the human abilities to empathize/sympathize allow for an experience that transcends the mere action of a plot. video games have never given me such an experience. i have enjoyed the storylines of videogames much like i would the writings of a pulp novelist: exciting and swift. however, they, of course, have never moved me quite like a great novel. i don't see why videogames can't accomplish the same feat. the question is: are users interested in making their games more than the light fantasy they are?

I mean, if the same EPA testing standardis used on all cars, and the hybrids are overrated...

That said, I have an '88 Volvo that I watch the mileage of pretty closely, and I get b/w 25 and 30 mpg. And it's a big heavy bastard...

In my own little experiment I have tested the adoption of F/OSS apps in my family.

While no one in my family is AGAINST using OSS, they hesitate to learn a new way to do something when it comes to software.

So, I have passed out numerous copies of Mozilla, OOo for their windows boxes, andmost are quite happy with the apps. (especially Mozilla)

More should be done to port Linux apps to windows, despite the fact that is seems counterproductive (not to mention a complete pain in the ass...)

  5. Mircobes= trouble for yeast infections on Who's Behind the Shower Curtain? · · Score: 2, Informative

The next time you take antibiotics, think about this: Lactobacillus and Streptococcus are two species of bacteria that outcompete many more harmful varieties of microbes. They each have characteristics which help to make the surface of your skin quite inhospitable for other invading microbes.
When you take antibiotics, your susceptibility to get a yeast infection (if your female) increases dramatically, since the acidic environment created by Lactobacillus' metabolic wastes makes life difficult at best for the yeast trying to establish itself.
Yeah, yeah...the shower curtain thing is pretty damn gross, but lighten up. As I am continually trying to convince my wife: living with a little bacteria will only serve to HELP our health rather than diminish it. (I can't believe I'm going to word it this way, but...) The more we work to build commensurate/mutualistic symbiotic relationships with bacteria the more we have to gain.

True, I will often have formatting trouble when I open documents that have a special MS feature enabled, but other that than that, OO.o is all I use.

With many of my professors, I get the feeling that it's the University that requires the updated texts. My profs could care less if we had a new book or not: especially the older instuctors.

In my experience (bio), professors know the material they want to teach, and any text is merely a teaching aid. In fact, by the end of the term, I'll have 50 pages of photocopies that were much more relevant to the class subject matter than any text. Based off that occurance I choose to either forgo the purchase a text or simply buy a used or old edition for 1/3 the price.

I guess what it boils down to is this: who's teaching the classes? The text or the instructor?

The point is that all forms of life can be divided into discreet units that display often surprising emergent properties when allowed to interact.
