Theres actually a reason why. Linus doesnt like binary only drivers , makeing it easier for people to make binary only dirvers would not be a very good idea.By makeing in damm hard to have make binary only drivers companies that might have gone binary only "just to be safe" go the OO route because it costs less $ (and thats one language all companies speek $). Then again linux is open source , if you want to write a wrapper to load binary modules written to your own API specs , go do it your self (you might find some interested people , but as you can guess I would not be on that list). People who use bianry only drivers are more of the , the computer just has to work crowd (coincidentlly they dont code a lot) ; and the people who preffer OO drivers tend to be those who want to know WTF your doing on there system , and maybe even tweek your drivers.
In conclusion:Binary only drivers sux0r uber , so why make people make more?
Now I'm not an investment banker or anything , but personally Id wait for them to release there numbers before I started investing. THen again I am a bit biased because I'm working on a searching product.
WHile microsoft may have to substantilly shift its business I dont see it going out of business. If worst comes to worst (from there point of view) they could make big $$$ by making "microsoft linux" and adding compatability layers for old windows software. At the same time they are diverisifying like , well something that diverisifies a lot , they will find something which they can make some money off and will survive.
I'd like to see that:-) Heres what I see as the "road map": Of course revision one wouldnt support braeking , but who needs breaking ? Just drive real slow:-) Version two will support intermitent breaking (it always locks) but thats ok. And eventualy version three will be fully functional Version 4 will break everything , but there will be a cool splash screen.....
The other option is to do what some universities do. Your computer gets infected with worm X , automatic network program Y detects this and adds ACL Z to direct all of your traffic to a (secure) download site for patch and once patch is downloaded (and run) remozes ACL Z. Sure it might cost a couple thousand to set up but if you are a huge cable company (with millions of subscribers) whats a few k ?
Your ISP shouldnt have to filter out random ports because someone somewhere wrote some crap software which is now easily explotaible over those ports. The fault is all the users who didnt patch there systems. I dont know about you but when my ISP starts port filtering I get pissed off , that my decision to make not theres (stupid monkies blocked of port 20 through 25 . I had to run ssh on a different port!)
Actually there is an ottawa based company doing that for vending machines. You SMS a number and it withdrawls a certain amount of money from a fixed dollar account , passes the information to the vending machine and voila food/drink/chemicals.
For programming class access to the internet is very useful. The ability to check online references is very useful (espically if your teacher cant answer your question:-). That being said , blocking IM apps make perfect sense.
To a certain extent you may be correct. But you have to look at it in a slightly different light. If the power goes out hospitals , telephone networks , and other "essential" services tend to have backup generators and backup batteries. Now for the internet to be ready to reach the legendary uptime of POTS it will have to improve. This means that we should not be routing information on which if it doesnt get there people die exclusively over the internet. The so called essential services must all be willing to accept that one or more of the essential services will fail (hence the amazing backup batteries , generators etc. found at hospitals and telphone companies).
Here here. I currently go to school. If I wanted to donate $50 I would have to without coffee for two months . Given that , I think I'd rather keep my coffee (and be able to go to my morning classes:-)
Depending on your world outlook , it very well could be.
If you subscribe to the notion that humanities job is to discover/understand everything it can about our unvirse/life then opensource very well could be the answer to life it self . Or at least part of the solution.
CRM can be quite usefull for smaller companies. The ability to keep track of your customers and provide better support is a neccesasity if smaller companies want to keep there clients.
I was under the they were a meta search engine witch added som additional features. I also understood that they license some of there results from google (hence the high quality of results).
Can I ask what you would suggest as a good hardware review site (if you know of any ones that do good reviews of mobos and other stuff that would be greatly appreciated).
RTFM. it's not just about sitefinder but they want to fully comercialize the internet as a whole . They want verisgn to be incharge of the root servers . The site finder situation showd the internet community what verisgn thinks "innoviation" is. All in all the anomisity is at a company that wants to turn the internet into one big commercial venture. I dont know about you , but that is not what I want .
What do you have againts intranet file sharing ? Unles you use hubs I dont see how this could be a problem for other students and would likely decrease your overall bandwith usage.
We get re-sellable bandwith (3.5m) for $60/month . :-)

This is slashdot . Anything predicting , suggesting , or talking about the end of microsoft is news* .
*By news I mean gets posted , not that it is actually news .

On that note I should point out that the low end UPS's have horrible power meters :-)

sounds like some ones been doing a bit to much drug induced codeing .

I would say that it takes a sampelling and attempts to determine the most popular at the time eh?

No we use 486s for that :-)
J.K
More seriously we use a combination of platforms for our webhosting , all more powerfull than said 386 laptop .
Its not particullarly old , it is a 386 . Still works , although the batery is dead.

Its not about a couple of kernel modules , they modified the kernel!
