I would have to say that it is your brain filtering out uneeded information. It is the same way optical illusions work. I have a DLP projector. When I first got it I noticed the rainbow effect everytime I rapidly moved my eyes. Now after almost a year I never notice it even when doing that. Your brain learns to compensate, or at least filter out (ignore) the effect. I can only see teh rainbow effect when I put a whtie object in front of the light path and flick it back and forth rapidly. In the way of refresh rates, it may be that some peoples brains are able to filter out the effect more than others. However, it does not mean that the brain still does not percieve the flickering, it jsut filters that out for your consciousness. Even though you don't notice the flicker, you can still get headaches and fatigue. The worst part is, most people don't pinpoint WHY they are getting these symptons and thus the problem is not cured.
I have noticed that after being outside on a bright sunny day my 75Hz refresh can be noticably flickering when previously it had been fine. Or maybe after more than the usual amount of coffee. So the effect can not only vary from person to person, but also within one person's experience depending on the amount of light stimuli previously presented . I wouldn't know the actual reason for this and any theories I might have would probably be wildly off base. But based on htat observation I would think maybe a polarizing filter put in front of the screen would noticeably reduce the effect of flickering at any given refresh rate. I am going to try that with my sister's polarized sunglasses here in a minute.
Why didn't Nintendo overclock this way in the first place? If there allegedly isn't any problems with overclocking it now with heat buildup and all, why not? They could have boasted they have a faster system than even Sega with thier "blast processing" Sonic the Hedgehog mascot thingamagig. I mean geez, c'mon!
Why can't we just say we will have both convergence AND divergence, like we already have today? The future of PC's isn't neccessarily going to just evolve in one direction. It will evolve on all fronts, filling whatever role or niche is required. I am sure there will always still be a need for the one-box-does-it-all approach simply for the increased speed and power it has now, and will still have in the future.
They can pry my self-built PC box that does it all out from my cold dead hands!
"So IBM is out of the PC business, and Lenovo has become a major global player. It's epochal, yes,to see the founder of an industry exiting"
That statement gaffs me because IBM is not the founder of the PC per say. Sure they are the one who chose the currently dominating architecture, but they are not the founders of personal computing itself by a long shot. I am sure I needn't point out the obvious examples (still present, or long since faded away).
Yeah, I had thought of the print -> scan -> OCR method before. This takes time of course. But I agree it might in the long run be easier since I really don't have a significant amount of text to convert over.
Plus I prob need to go find a ink cartridge for it. Does anybody sell those anymore. I saw them a few years ago at WAL-MART, but I don't know anymore.
Allow me to glom.....

I hate glomming onto another submitted story, but I have a similar need. I have a Brother word processor circa 1991 that I would love to be able to hook up to my serial port or something. I have a lot of text data that would be convenient to transfer over to my PC.
I understand there might be some difficulty interpreting the word processor code and file structures. It might even be nigh IMPOSSIBLE. Has anyone ever heard of any sort of interpreter for communication with a Brother word processor, or is that info stritclty porprietary and FORBIDDEN?
Even easier would be to somehow allow my PC to read the file structure for the floppies. Is there any info on the fundamentals of the Brother word processor's file structure floating around out there? Aren't there other people who have data on these things and would like it transferred to another format? I can't imagine this sort of thing has not been looked into yet.
Um...I have a P3 500 MHz on a 100 MHz bus with 256MB's of RAM that I use as a HTPC. It plays XviD, DivX, and DVD's with Windows XP and WIndows Media player. It plays just fine. The DivX files are DVD resolution by the way. Although I wouldn't be able to do anything else on it at the same time, it works great.
If you have software that takes advantage of SSE2 and so forth, I don't see why you need a GHz and up CPU for just media playback. Now it's probably too slow to ever record anything, but I don't need it to do that anyways.
People always have this pre-conceived notion that you need a GHz+ CPU to do anything useful and I think that is just hogwash.
In other words, if you need at least a PIII 766 for these files, either you haven't got the PC setup properly, or the software isn't up to snuff.
back in my day we had -.5D interfaces and we liked it! It was wierd though because you had to initiate everything you wanted done, backwards. If you did it forwards, it would be executed backwards and screw up EVERYTHING!
RTFA: it means the atoms are streched further apart so there are less collisions for the negative charges to go through.
It would be the definition of strained in this sense: "To pull, draw, or stretch tight: strained the sheets over the bed.", instead of in this sense: "To exert or tax to the utmost: straining our ears to hear."
This is gonna be great! Many possiblities are forthcoming regarding the PHD status of a common household feline. I can't think of any right now, but I'm sure there are possibilities there......right?
"If a person tells Snuggling Ifbot, "I'm bored today," the robot might respond, "Are you bored? What do you want to do?" ---- It freaking asks you if you're bored after you've already told it you were bored. How smart is that? I would hope it at least suggests some things to do instead of merely asking. "Oh well Mr. Robot, I am so bored that I want to sit around talking to YOUR dumbass all day thank you very much." I can envision the Microsoft Windows OS powering the thing with this slogan: "Winrobes, what do you want to do today?" "Oh you say you are comatose because I am such a boring robot. Are you bored? What is your favorite color? Let's talk about our favorite color shall we?"
It seems to me that the old folks would get a more intellectually stimulating conversation if they watched Teletubbies episodes all day and talked to the freaking television screen.

They used a good slashdotting to test thier power supplies. Needless to say.....all failed and went up in a wave of smoke and ashes.
A slashdot main link that was already a bittorrent.....
I am hereby officially flabbergasted!

The first thing I construed the headline to mean was this card used up 6200 watts and was named TurboCache! Can you imagine! That would be INSANE!

Do I get extra-super-duper nerd points for pointing out that Gordon Moore mande this statement in the seventies rather than the sixties?

Yeah, but it's fun to pretend that he DID say that so we can all have something to make stupid jokes about and laugh and have a good time about.
Didn't that character fuel a lot of sales for Playstation (original)consoles with the 1st 3D version of Metal Gear?
Damn lameness filters! HAR HAR HAR!
That is a great song! I have always liked that song.

Why can't people freaking spell? It's ELUSIVE, not freaking "ILLUSIVE". You freaking DOLT, go back to school and learn how to freaking spell.
