  1. Put it in a case! on DIY High-Quality XGA Projector for ~$300 · · Score: 1

I like the idea but it's really too bulky to fit in my living room. What would be interesting is to use a different bulb and lens arrangement and fit the whole projector in some sort of case (with a fan of course), making it more esthetic and some what portable. The right bulb/lens arrangement and a light diffusing material between the bulb and the screen to get a more evenly lit picture, to avoid the annoying affect of having darker edges. What would also be somewhat interesting would be to use it for a backlit projection display like a big screen projection TV; this would require a much larger case and a permanent screen of some sort. Has anybody tried any of these two ideas before?

  2. Preventative approach on Carpal Tunnel- Laptops Better than Ergo Keyboards? · · Score: 1

I was a full time College student, a part time programmer, and a part time guitar/bass player. I've been diagnosed with tendonitis in both wrists a few times over a period of a few years (I was prescribed non-steroidal anti-inflammatory like Celebrex - didn't really help, same as Advil, but much more expensive). A year ago I was diagnosed with (bilateral) Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, for which the orthopedic surgeon prescribed a pair of these wrist braces. I got them much cheaper that than that site's list price, both together came out to about 100$ USD. After get some more test results, the orthopedic surgeon doesn't know what's going on and he's sending me off to a Rheumatologist!?!

As for laptop keyboard being better than ergonomic keyboards, I wouldn't be able to generalize. Some people find those split keyboards much worse. I have found that my old IBM Thinkpad 760E (shrug!) keyboard is comfortable but I wouldn't say better than a regular keyboard. I have to admit though, that the trackpoint on my Thinkpad is very useful and much more comfortable than any mouse (bye bye FPS)!

Best advice I can give to most people is take the preventative approach:
    • Don't push yourself!!! Typing too fast with poor technique and tensing up because you're stressed and pushing against a deadline is a sure way to hurt yourself. Think of pianists and how they are taught to have good posture, and to keep their hands, fingers, and arms very relaxed at all times while they play.
    • Find a good balance of work to rest breaks in which you should get out of your chair and stretch, practice deep breathing, or better yet meditate .
    • Don't wait for signs of pain to show because by then it's starting to get too late and the damage has already begun.
    • Have an ergonomic workstation in 10 steps! (very helpful site by Cornell University)
    • Here are 5 Tips for Using a Laptop Computer (subsection of the above site)
    • You can even use voice recognition for extended breaks.

I had a Logitech Marble mouse (trackball) (I had tried the Trackman FX but didn't like it) for a while, and when it was still new, I thought it helped but I don't think it really did. I recently switch back to a regular optical mouse and realized that it's about the same. The best for me has been the trackpoint so far, but I haven't used it for long enough.

Be very careful with those rest pads that are placed in front of the keyboard and mouse. They are there to rest your wrists on only when you're not typing or moving the mouse. I didn't find them effective either.

    Hope it helps!
  3. Cheaper and more convenient alternative perhaps? on Endless Liquid Refreshment · · Score: 1

What about Seltzer Bottles & Soda Siphon? I haven't tried it myself, but it doesn't sound like a bad deal for those who want to have fresh soda at home without the investment and maintenance of a large machine. http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF- 8&q=Seltzer+Bottles+Soda+Siphon&meta=
