  1. Incremental or Major... on Mac OS X 10.4 "Tiger" Preview at WWDC · · Score: 5, Interesting

The big question I'm waiting to answer is whether this will be an incremental update or a major update. Panther added some nice new functionality Fast User Switching, Expose (which I don't use nearly as much as I thought I would the first time I saw it), and better networking support. It was a tough call but I believe it was worth the upgrade, fast user switching alone has made my life a lot easier.

What's left, quite a lot actually. The Finder for one thing could use a lot of enhancements. Forgoing the whole brush metal fiasco, I care little about, there is the whole underlying functionality. Why is it that the OS can't update the window's contents without being pushed to do it. This is something that is fundamentally critical to an operating system. Additionally browsing folders across a network with a large number of files in it is painfully slow, and I'm talking my 100MB network at home.

Lastly I would like to see a decent integrated development environment. XCode is a nice upgrade from previous tools but I'd still like to be able to work on the GUI and on code at the same time. CASE tools have come a long way, but Apple's tools still have a very antiquated feel about them.

Thanks this was precisely what I was hoping to get when I posted the question.

As far as keyboards go I'm already using a Microsoft Natural for my PC and the standard keyboard that came with my mac. I can switch to the PC keyboard for both, but if its virtualized will Microsoft's Intellitouch recognize the keyboard on the Mac so I can map the appropriate keys.

The more I read the more I come to realize that it will probably be cheaper, and easier, to just by a smaller LCD monitor for my PC.

You would think that this wouldn't be so difficult to do. I'm amazed at the level of complexity involved in this.

Sorry if my initial posting was not specific enough. This was my first time posting a question.

Yes I'm looking to run at the native resolution, if possible. I keep my PC around to play games on so VNC or other networking solutions won't work.

As far as googling, I did that and only came up with some switches that wouldn't support my resolution. Again I should have been more specific.

I was hoping I wasn't the only person out there who wanted to do this and was looking for some input from others who have tried this to see what solutions work best.

On a side note, I've read your criticisms and have distilled from them the mistakes I made in my initial posting. In the future I will try to post more detailed information.

Arby's now that is really interesting. That would be the last place I'd expect a hotspot, but then again McDonalds is joining the frey so I guess I shouldn't be all that surprised. I haven't found any free hotspots in Phoenix. I'm not saying they don't exist, just that all the places I visit as hotspots have that damnable T-Mobile sign in their window. $6.00 to check my email is a little stiff. I've even tried some of the web's wi-fi listing sites but they only seem to carry the big ones, the Sprints, T-Mobile, etc. Is there a site that catalogs the small ones?

I can see where the absence of all the additional software and hardware would make it significantly cheaper to run a hotspot. Where I question your hypothesis is in the $50.00 estimate for the broadband connection. Assuming they're using a residential connection the $50.00 is appropriate but the terms of service usually prevent the use as a free wireless hotspot. A commercial connection costs significantly more and then usually is accompanied by bandwidth restrictions and/or meters rates based on bandwidth used. Additionally, although I'm not certain on this point, wouldn't you be liable for whatever is done through your access point since you make no effort to secure it?

Several times I've read about Starbucks and their free Hotspots. Where are these? Perhaps in Manhattan or some other metropolitan region but here in Phoenix they're all T-Mobile hotspots and I have to pay $6.00 for an hour, minimum, and .10 a minute thereafter. I would greatly welcome a free hotspot, even with some advertisements. Assuming they were unobtrusive, ie. non Pop-ups, unders, Flash with sound. Half the time I just want to connect to check email and have to pay for the first full hour anyway, so adds wouldn't be a major problem.

That would be true, except for one small thing, at least at the Starbucks in Phoenix. It's not free. I have to pay $6.00 and hour to use the wireless connection there through T-Mobile. So I would very much like the idea of having a free hotspot in return for adds. Like was mentioned above it would even be cool if the adds were for local vendors.

Requirements that are too rigid are bad. But so too are requirements that are too loose. You can't sit down at a computer to program without some idea of what result you want to end up at. Often proof-of-concept programs are helpful, but all too often management sees a demo that appears 80% feature complete and thinks the project is almost done. It leads to unrealistic expectations.

The best trick I've ever seen for setting project goals is to sit developers down with business users or the end users of the product and have them observe work in action. This understanding can go a long way when a developer is back in the 'cube' for long hours of coding. Domain knowledge is critical to a developer. Otherwise you end up with some trully epic program that bears little to no pracitcal value.

Requirements should be clear, reviewed often, and adjusted as necessary. Which requires a good project manager to really pull off succesfully.

All in all programming is really a mixture of a lot of aspects and any one not in balance with the others will skew the results. Sometimes you'll still get something usefull, but more often then not the results are hideous. And management will always blame the developers and developers will always blame management, with the only difference being the developers don't have the ability to can management.
