Word is a word processor, and my Word 98 (not to mention Excel and PPT) reads newer version docs from both platforms just fine. Ease of use would literally mean learning to type, so I'm not sure I understand your argument. Using Word is at times akin to Rocket Science (it is by far the biggest, most un-intuitive piece of bloatware known to mankind in my opinion), but it's still just a word processor.

But, you seem to be missing the point. Would they be singing the end of Apple as soon as Appleites starting missing the new pieces of bloatware that the Windows people are priviledge to? What would be the problem? I have a brother that is still using Office 98 just fine. No problems at all with windows users sending him .docs from new Office versions. This is a 6 year old version, and MS has 2004 for the Mac burning the shelf right now.

Not to mention projects like OpenOffice, iLife (as you mentioned), etc...

No, I think we would be just fine for many many years to come if MS announce tomorrow that 2004 would be the last version. Yes, a PR hit for sure, but for BOTH vendors. Not to mention the loss of a great money maker for MS. Apple's mainstream credibility is just fine. It has the #1 selling mp3 player on the market, OS X, G5's, iLife (unbelievable apps), Safari (fastest browser I use), iTunes (now for PC!), the Music store which is again, the #1 online music store, etc...

No, this Office thing would be just fine in my opinion,

You are incorrect. The .doc (as well as .ppt, .xcl, etc...) has remained the same in readability by all versions of Office, on all platforms for a reason. They wouldn't just stop this functionality. People on the Windows side would be up in arms, literally, let alone the Mac people. Not to mention, Office 2004 is already done for the Mac.

Therefore, I would suspect it would be several years, at LEAST before Mac users felt the pinch. Especially considering that the only thing they would be most likely missing is just a little more bloat to the biggest piece of bloatware I'm aware of.

They wouldn't make .doc's readable by only their "new version". That's just silly. It makes no sense. It never has, that't why they haven't yet, through all these years...

    Nail on the head.

People far, far too often equate "different" with "faulty" without realizing that it's the differences that do more to fulfill the potential of the human spirit than anything else we know of.

We would be wise to realize this. There is enormous strength in diversity that many people seem not to realize. We should celebrate and encourage diversity in all things. Instead, we are bred to judge and categorize. Watch TV for an hour and tell me how many perfect men and women you see. Literally "one in a million" actors portraying a "lifestyle" that you now need to have, etc... it's all quite maddening to watch and to realize that there are vast numbers of people who spend their lives attempting to fulfill those "fantasies" to the great delight of the corporation making those commercials, TV shows, etc... They create a want, and then sell it to you. It's the same as it has been forever, they are just masters with window to your living room now, able to form world views by the millions.

People need to wake up. Differences equal strength. Conformity is good for business, bad for the human spirit and its potential.

Artistic endevour vs. power/money. Of course, we can have both, but you have to realize that power/money will end up winning, as it is right now. You see, it breeds the power. With that power they want more of it, more control, more money, more "power", more conformity, more creating wants that are unatainable, etc... exit diversity and artistic endevour. It's unprofitable. It's ROI is unnattractive.

When I tell people I'm happy with my 6 year old car that doesn't even have a CD player (gasp!), they wonder what is "wrong" with me (GM execs start high fiving each other from their plants in Mexico as their "minions" take to the battle). They say, "come on, buy a new car already! That one is ugly, old, and you have to use one of those silly tape convertors to use your CD player". I usually just say I use the convertor for my iPod instead, but no matter. My clothes aren't cool unless they see the designer's tag to make SURE it's cool (looks aren't everything, you see, it's how much you SPENT on it). What kind of f'd up world is this that we have created? What happened to "hey, that shirt looks good on you," and then that's it. I buy my clothes from the thrift store or from local makers and have only recieved compliments... heh. When they ask what "kind" the shirt/pants are, I tell them I don't know I got it from the thrift store, and their opinions change. This is the sad state of affairs we have let grow into the "norm".

Reinforce the cockpit doors and move on. This discussion is ridiculous. The only reason "terrorists" would even attempt the Herculean feat of getting weapons on an airliner would be to hijack it. Take that ability away by not letting them through the cockpit door. End of fucking story.

This TSA tactic is not to provide safety, but rather a new avenue for gaining information on people, because it can. "You must fear them, we will protect you." Fear breeds consent. The power gained with a fear wracked populace is enormous, and many in power realize this, or are learning. This is just the latest "avenue" for gaining information on more people, nothing more.

Why do we need more than this? To protect them from the guns that we have placed on the planes on purpose in the form of marshalls? Can a box cutter get through them? If not, then why do they check for them on check in? It seems that if "they" can't get to the controls, and they know it, then why would someone attempt a hijack? Even if the dumbasses did attempt a hijack, the aircraft couldn't be "commandeered" ala not getting to the cockpit, so... If they merely wanted to kill people it seems a plane would be the last place one would try to penetrate. There are far less secure places, always has been. It seems hijacking would be the only reason to take a gun on a plane. So, what then would be the point of this new intrusion on the part of the TSA?

Is this all part of the fantastic ruse to instill fear just a little bit more, or is this just a tactic to gain info on people? It surely doesn't seem that "hijacking" is a credible threat anymore. Make the cockpit secure and you've turned the thing into a flying bus, no more. Let me throught the damn checkout line, please!

And for those that wish to toy with probability:

Universe is approx. 12.5 billions years old

our little planet is approx. 4.5 - 5 billions years old, relatively young

and humans have been on this planet for only approx. 200,000 years, far less time than the dinosaurs were around (150 million years compared to human's measly 200 thou). And yet, in that time we have put one of our kind on the moon.

We humans have been around for approx. 0.000016% of the age of the Universe.

Extremophiles: Life arises much easier than previously thought and the idea of life needing Earthlike conditions is quicly being proven false.

    Extrasolar planets:
Current numbers show that there should be approx. 100 billion extrasolar planets in this galaxy alone. There are 100 billion galaxies.
