Ive liked other posts of yours and you seem to be willing to allow an unbiased view, I believe stallmans point in this matter might be silly but he came from the days when the I.t.s. guys picked locks to free up terminals etc. this is conjecture but i think he is more concerned with how the system may be expanded, and the fact that a more sensitive reader than the one at the doors could in theory track the chip while it is on campus.
Not to mention this whole gates building thing has to have clipped his beard something fierce so I am sure he is looking for things to bitch about it.
I find it amusing when I see comment after comment denigrating Richard Stallman, he made it through the math55 program. He has written more complex and well coded software than anyone I have met personally. He has strong opinions and sticks to his guns. Its almost like half the slashdot crowd wants lots of free software sans the opinions of the author. Be a good boy code me something I use every day but don't open your mouth.
I am no stallman zealot but if most of the mental midgets who have such a problem with his insistence on precision in terminology, stopped and thought about where it stems from, the fact that he is a bigger math geek than practically and human walking this ball of mud today hence that type of mentality offers no lenience when it comes to imprecission.
The man can be an asshole, and he is full of himself.
To me he has earned the right to be full of himself. While most of you shooting your mouth off have never done anything for open source at all.
As to being an asshole join the club most of us just dont get that kind of spotlight shown on our flaws.
Ranting about the peanut gallery is useless I suppose
goddamn hypocritical jackdaws.
I worked freelance for hotels.com and some other big name firms. I am a highschool dropout. The CS grads I worked with were good, but not great. Other than one ex army CS grad I found the inability in my peers to aproach a problem from a new angle to be across the board.
Something this new generation seems to be forgetting is that once upoun a time someone that knew ass from a $ prompt and didn't go to school got more credit than ninnies who excel at theory but cant code to save there own life.
If you learn deep magic on your own without having it spoon fed to you then in my experience you are someone who really knows what they are doing. Often excelling at real world problem solving above and beyond hothouse flower programmers.
Thats the difference between a person that can write a few cotton candy language database connections and someone that writes drivers on the bare metal. You either LUST after computers they consume your life. If you dont live sleep and breathe them for a few years then you can't achieve truly wizardlly status.
You cant impart love with a university course. As to math being important to programming, if you cant see that a universe based purely on numbers requires you to be able to manipulate them in order to be really good at what you do, then you have no business in a cs course at all.
I went from programming for a living to building harleys and hotrods / programming for fun but I spend just as much time in front of the keyboard now as I did then. A real geek just cant give it up.
Sorry for any spelling errors etc. for some reason this thread irritated me and I just had to spout off.
I bought the sony f707 camera when it was among the very first 5 megapixel camera's and they were around 1k a pop, admittedly I was spurred on by the impending ejection of my one and only rugrat.
I have to say the interchangeable zeiss lenses have been of the highest quality as long as im taking pictures of things that are not moving really quickly. The shutter speed has a delay I can count on to miss whatever I am wanting to shoot if motion faster than a slow walk is involved (unless I lead it just right a real pain in my ass) The time limit on mpegs also irritated me when they came out with the next camera in the series minus this pointless restriction....
One of the things I noticed is flaws in peoples complexion, teeth, or anything else you dont want to have show up in a photo just kind of jump out. Stark and somehow to realistic compared to other cameras. I havent been able to decide what causes this phenonmenon. I suppose its just the level of detail a true 5.x megapixel with a high grade lense captures.
Canon SLR is what I am looking at buying now. But which one??
I have setup and used gphoto or mounted the files as usb mass storage with a script to transfer/name/delete from camera, the one thing I miss from xp is the ease of handling my digital camera and cropping images. I hate to say it but the only ap i really miss is paint shop pro. I just cannot warm up to the gimp not for lack of trying (both stable and cutting edge as well as latest cvs.) I just dont enjoy using it the way I did psp 7.2 (dont really like 8)
If anyone has a better way of handling mounting and emptying cameras , something with a nice easy to use wizard script with a clean gui please let me know.
I run gentoo thus obviously enjoy (pain cough cough) knowing how to do lots of things most distro's gloss over, but dealing with my camera is the one thing I really just hate. I want it to do everything automagically. Just like.... nah I wont say it.
I *am* an actual mechanic as well as a former professional coder and current gentoo/gnu/linux zealot.
A big reason why these codes are not available to the public is Snap-on and matco cant charge you out the ass for diagnostic equipment, updates etc.
I know since we are a small independent shop and can't afford some modules for the tester that we have had to send some vw businnes for a reaming at the dealership.
Dealerships are by and large ripoof artists on a huge scale.
I could go on but I have to go work on my ride *rolls eyes*

And people really hadn't gotten the idea of open source. People said, "Why did you do that?'' Especially in the United States, but also in Finland. People just did not understand the concept of creating a program because you like programming, and they did not understand the concept of Hey, sure, I like money, but on the other hand I'm a programmer, I will get paid.
It's not as if programmers go hungry in this world. So, I wasn't worried about money and making money. At the same time, I'd done this project for myself. I didn't want to commercialize it because I didn't want to go through the headaches. And I had no incentive to.

my b.s.
This is a perfect example of why this whole thing is totally irrelevant. We arent in it to beat microsoft thats just a by product of what we are doing. Coding because we love good well written functional code. and giving it away because that way we get what WE want. What the techies love and use. Good clean secure peer tested code. Coded for fun or the challenge of it. M$ can spread fud all it wants the proof is in the pudding and we CANT lose any market share. More of a movement than a market.
/ my b.s.
As long as a machine is connected to the internet there is going to be a method to compromise it.
My question is this why Debian?
They are the only Linux distribution that is truly built by volunteers to gain any mindshare of real note. (not sure about slack so please dont sick bob dobs on me) This is not imhop the work of rank amatuer crackers with there first root kit. These were servers being run by experienced admins using a distro known for stability which when patched and up to date usually means somewhat difficult to hack.
I seriously doubt these guys were running winders attempting this either. Wtf is happening to the community when people with talent are attacking a distro that yet again imhop doesnt suck.
These guys need to be found and buried. Not by the police but by the commmunity.
Last but not least (places tinfoil hat on head) could this have been funded by M$ trying to discredit linux. I cant see the glory angle so its got to be money or power. (no glory in getting called a dick when you tell your friends what you did)
If I seemed vague I apologize, it seemed patently obvious that if alienware is the yardstick (excepting cost) I am using then they would have the "specs" I would like to incorporate. I suppose I should have explained the salient points of the project idea as well as EXACTLY how I would like the machine to behave and the reasons behind it.
By the way the modded up helpdesk comment was cute I almost bit on that troll feed.
I'll call the project idea openlaptop for convenience.
Most laptops do not have Linux friendly hardware, software emulation is rife. For a good bit folks were buying Sony because they had hardware modems etc. To me a laptop should not have any hardware which uses software emulation. All the hardware should have available specs to code drivers from. Those are the first two firm rules.
I am in love with building things from scratch/customizing things to perform better than what I can buy, everything from my car to my home is something that I put allot of effort and time into. WHY NOT MY LAPTOP? I do not like the bundles offered by companies like dell *insert company name here* I don?t want to buy them. For those of you who are satisfied with the obvious crap hardware being shoved down our throats then great. Enjoy.
I am going to approach things in the way that the actual open source community approaches things. If I don?t like something come up with a better mousetrap and do something about it.
So on to the specs. I may be in the minority but since I am not a road warrior I?m not all that concerned about weight a factor that has been mentioned several times. Due to my build a 9 pound notebook is not exactly heavy to me.
So I rule weight out as an option.
Things that are important to me however are, screen size/resolution, battery life, and processor and ram speeds. As well as keyboard size. I?m not a big fan of the newer keyboard configs either, a layout on a notebook similar to the happy hacker keyboard with the ctrl key where it should be. No windows keys etc. would please me muchly.
So my hardware specs run something like this.
Pentium mx chip 3.0 GHz or faster. Built in wifi with prism 2 chipset. Keyboard layout as listed above. 17 inch screen geforce go or ati portable chipset. Hardware modem. Gigabit ethernet. Swap bay at least two pci mca slots. Rear panel is basically the same as IBM two ps2 ports one lpt 2 to 4 USB. I want at least two hours of battery life using Gentoo with fluxbox as the manager. Id like it if the fsb was the fastest available for a notebook.
Im taking the baby steps right now in this project claying up a model of how I want the notebook to look. Since I have worked with carbon fiber previously and have been impressed by the tensile strenght and heat resistance of the material I was thinking of going that route for the chassis with some sort of light metal inner framework ala the titanium chassis of the t series IBM laptops.
Now the point of the project even though I could go on for hours about ideas and how they may be achieved.
I want to offer the plans to build the notebook for free on the web. Basically a build your own Linux friendly notebook how-to. With sources of hardware etc. I KNOW that people selling Mac clones were getting access to the closed market Mac motherboards for kits. Why can't we do the same for laptops?
I am not looking to make a profit here merely for a way for me to build my perfect lappy hopefully for one half to three quarters the price of comparable systems and actually GET what *I* want out of it.
I want to say thanks to everyone that posted even semi useful information.
As to the parasites that can?t post anything useful, hmm I didn't expect so many. I must be new around here.
