I came to love math and science on my own; the teachers I had were an actual impediment to the process so I am probably not the best one to speak on this.
The problem is the lack of teachers able to engage people's minds combined with people who have no interest in learning these subjects; throw in a dash of ridicule for enjoying those subjects from your oh so clever "peers" and you have a problem that is not going to be solved with a simple new teaching technique. You cannot force people to enjoy math or science, so to me it is better to find those who excel in this field and give them the most in depth and supportive training possible. You would have to maintain a good math program for the rest to root out the late bloomers and give them the level of math and science needed to be a contributing member of society; in other words, someone who uses reason and logic rather than superstition and religion to guide their life.
So let's go with the assumption you are one of the rare few teachers who really and truly care, (and have not been ground down by the administration into not giving a shit) show them how math and science apply to real life.
That kind of thing is what got my interest, for instance the math that goes into designing a motor cycle frame, or talk about the great scientists of the past that sacrificed everything for science and why they did it (marie curie for instance), give them a vision of where we as a species are going and how these skills can contribute to it.

I recently had an ask slashdot question about rolling out fiber via a co-op. While thinking about this I realised the hardest part of running a network with huge pipe available to every john h. windowsuser, is the end user themselves. A botnet with 10 to 30 megabit upstream per drone is nothing to sneeze at considering the hard time data centers are already having with less than one meg up on most home connections. (at least here in the bible belt one meg up at most is the norm =P)
I sincerly hope that Verizon keeps good logs and they as well as anyone rolling out DOCSIS 3 will contact users whos machines are behaving in an abusive fashion or to much of a good thing might well lead to the self destruction of the net.

Fact of the matter is A.Z. scanners dont give real time diagnostics as the engine is running, also if the system doesnt store hardcodes they cant read the trouble code at all.
There is also the troublesome fact that not all cars are obd2 compliant, nor does the socket under the dash stay the same from car to car.
Not to mention our obd2 socket has 9 different keys in order to be able to talk to different brands of cars.
Chryslers diagnostic harness is probably the most accurate of all the brands of car I work on.
As good as mercedes bmw and audi if not better.
Something else people should realise is that often the on board diagnostics are so bad they give you erroneous codes that have nothing to do with the issue.
Our shop has Snap-on diagnostics equipment you have to spend a few grand for the initial equipment a few grand more for the software and every few years get hit up again when new software comes out. Same as most dealerships use.
The high cost of the equipment is why all the cheap date guys bitching about a 60 dollar diagnostic fee get hit for that much.
The open source diag that I read about farther up has definately peaked my interest. I am going to make an ebuild of it with the authors permission and post it on my site.

Fact of the matter is A.Z. scanners dont give real time diagnostics as the engine is running, also if the system doesnt store hardcodes they cant read the trouble code at all. There is also the troublesome fact that not all cars are obd2 compliant, nor does the socket under the dash stay the same from car to car. Not to mention our obd2 socket has 9 different keys in order to be able to talk to different brands of cars. Chryslers diagnostic harness is probably the most accurate of all the brands of car I work on. As good as mercedes bmw and audi if not better. Something else people should realise is that often the on board diagnostics are so bad they give you erroneous codes that have nothing to do with the issue. Our shop has Snap-on diagnostics equipment you have to spend a few grand for the initial equipment a few grand more for the software and every few years get hit up again when new software comes out. Same as most dealerships use. The high cost of the equipment is why all the cheap date guys bitching about a 60 dollar diagnostic fee get hit for that much. The open source diag that I read about farther up has definately peaked my interest. I am going to make an ebuild of it with the authors permission and post it on my site.
