Actually, I hadden't thought of this, but how about synthetic nano shapes that act like biologicals? You *know* the guys at Fort Mead are all over this.
This reminds me of NSA's SELinux [nsa.gov], a ploy to get everybody to pass over an OS built with security foremost in mind (like OpenBSD [openbsd.org]) and rush instead into one for which the NSA no doubt has hundreds if not thousands of pre-programmed exploits.
As conceived by Crispin Cowan, Sardonix was to attract volunteer auditors by automatically ranking them according to the amount of code they've examined, and the number of security holes they've found. Auditors would lose points if a subsequent audit by someone else turned up bugs they missed.... In the end, though, nobody showed up.
Perhaps this is because for most of the (incredibly smart) people who make contributions to Linux kernel development, it's not about points? Now if they had attached MONEY value to those points, maybe the result would have been different; I mean at least SOME motivation to play the NSA game.
And Google is not? Froogle, Google News, Google Images, Google Translation... Google is a portal just as much as MSN, you seem to be ignoring this simply because Google has "cleaner lines" on their web site.
Can anybody think of any kind of new technology that has been abandoned, or even significantly delayed, through alleged (or real) risks?
I think one of the more realistic fears is not the new toys of spying and things that might creep into our personal freedoms, but rather environmental issues. And here, I don't mean the nasty chemicals needed to produce these things, but rather nanotube detritus finding it's way into our ecosystem and food sources. Certainly there is now and there has always been nano dirt in our air and finding it's way into our bodies, but these new engineered shapes may have unforeseen health issues, much like asbestos in the last 30 years.
Damn it, I have a DSL line, and I will run as many SPAM (yes, all caps, got a problem with it?) servers as I want.
Look. As long as the Internet is free, there will ne SPAM, get over it. There *may* be ways to filter it, but SPAM will never go away as long as the Internet is FREE. The *only* way to get rid of SPAM is to regulate the Internet. Now, do we *want* to *regulate* the Internet? Your choice.
but it sounds like Sun just wants everything to work its way
No, it sounds like Sun has a head that is not up their ass. It sounds like Sun understands that a fragmented Java and a fragmented Open Source are a Microsoft / SCO win. People, pull you heads out of your asses, and get with the program. Don't like the proprietary software model? Support something that can actually bring it down. Otherwise, go home and suck on your mamma's tit.
I have no idea why the parent is "funny". Everyone knows Microsoft makes Mac software, and without question, they have labs that have everything from Macs to vanilla Linux machines, Sparc Stations and everything else. Any company that does not investigate it's competition is beyond ignorent. People cut Microsoft a lot, but stupid people they are not.
Yeh, I'm not really a logic / spelling Nazi (actually, spell check has been a very good friend of mine, I took it out for dinner, and am hoping it "puts out"), but this one does kind of make me squirm. I was actually expecting "flamebait" or "offtopic"... But at least I don't post my crap as AC...
Manny who bitch-gripe about the cost of a CD or renting a DVD are the same people who don't think twice about plunking down $2.50 - $3.50 for a cup of fancy coffee.
The best way to make a small fortune.. is to start with a large one.
Actually, this *is* the Microsoft way. But first, you actually have to work for them, not a "perma-temp", then rake it in for a year or two, sell it or fold after sucking all the money out.
This whole root server thing is good for the Internet. For way too long, big corporations and the USA government have believed that the US "owns" the Internet. It seems like rules are made based on what USA corporations "want" or "need". Americans *do not* own the internet.
This will never catch on. Clothing is a lot more than "how it looks" but also how it feels on your bod. I hat shopping for things, but even though my wife knows what size I ware and what I like, I still want to know that I am comfortable in the stuff.
Hahhaaaa. Actually, I skim the classifieds, looking to see if there are actually any jobs for IT guys in Seattle anymore. Nope... By the way, would you like fries with that?

Well, you obviously have low Karma judging by your intro score. So you speak you mind here , do you? (It's a JOKE!)
Holy shit. 53? Your prospective boss should bow down! I assumed that most of the first 1000 where DEAD by now...
Hmmm. Wonder what OS that would be?

So you do care about having a cam on your phone?
Haven't read that small print in latin on the inside bottom of your Starbucks, eh?

Go Mac!
I am not involved with Public Information, or the press. I am only a poor cattle farmer.
Sorry you feel this is a troll, but it's not...

Yes, but what if they live underground ?

Yeh, spell-check is my friend. But oviously I forgot...
I've discouvered what happened to the Spirit lander... This picture explains everything.
